Hellow fellow americans. I would like for formally apolagize for being such a "dill-weed" over the course of the DeCSS trial. Unfortunately, i didn't realize that the implications of my ruling would basically fuck everything good about the internet.
For example. Did you know, that because of my ruling, one could practically infer that linking to a site that links to a site containing DeCSS source code is illegal. A)Because that site linked to is now illegal, which makes the linking site illegal - therefore violation the DMCA or something. and B)Because i've got my head shoved so far up my ass that i can see my stomach digesting the bullshit that the MPAA fed me. Of course, this means that a link to a link to a link to a link is now illegal...and since %99.9 of all websites contain "hyperlinks" - they're all illegal because they, invariably, lead somehow to DeCSS source.
on a lighter note: i think i'll just continue to hook my DVD player up to my computer and rip DVD's to mpeg.

I see a few posts about how slashdot is pro-DeCSS, or that we're not giving this whole thing a fair shake.
Let me be blunt. We're not, and the reasons are simple. This is not the last we'll see of 1st amendment violations on the net, this isn't the last of journalistic muzzling. This is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Orgs like the MPAA, or the RIAA are suing people like 2600 or Napster because they're still not commonplace (at least Napster wasn't when this shit started). Let me put it this way:
Hi, i'm Mr. Jones from Company X. I see you sitting there doing something that REALLY pisses me off, and threatens to leave me with so little money in the pocket of my Versache suit that i might have to whittle my car collection down to just 8 BMW's. So - it's become clear to me that i have to fuck you over to make sure that my pockets stay nice and lined for the cold winter that YOU are about to have. So, in all honesty, you have come up with a good product. one that is completely legal. that irks me. but i've got somethin' going for me. No one knows about it yet. So if i, Mr. Jones from Company X, fuck you over....the only people who are going to bitch about it are the extremists on slashdot. And since.5% of the world population actually reads slashdot - they'll be none the wiser. And in 10 years time - no one will even miss the useful product you made...because no one will know about it.
That's the way the world gets fucked by orgs like the MPAA - Preventative Maintenance.

yes, i am well aware of this. however, the point i was trying to make is that there are no communist countries in the world today. To my knowledge, there never really have been.

i don't know about anyone else, but this could turn out to be a good thing....if it actually creates enough problems to get people to question what they're viewing, it just might cause people to THINK about the wisdom of decisions they're making. God forbid people should actually QUESTION the purty pictures comin' from dat der purty picture box.

people have been doing all kinds of live censoring of TV/Radio for years. Putting broadcasts on delays to filter out cusswords or other "inapropriate" uses of the media. This is just another logical extention of that. Much like the old insertion of "buy coke" frames in movies back in the 40's and 50's.
my advice, don't discount the media...just be wary of the source.

i always found that the only MST3K's worth watching were the ones with joel (this, of course does not include the hilarious movie). He always had that quiet idiot-esque feel to him. I'm kinda sorry that Joel has been thrown out of the loop, so to speak. Personally, i say give credit where credit is due.

idunno. this is a little sketchy if you ask me. I do like the information that was given. I would certainly recommend it to anyone coming into the linux community for the first time
however, there are a lot of quips in there that make the pages read like a "hey, fuck you M$" style website. This is destined to make many write it off as anti-FUD FUD, so i would urge readers to take this one with a grain of salt. All in all, however, a very interesting read.

there is no reason to think that humanity has had any affect on the weather.
Um....how about the fact that all the concrete in Atlanta is causing thunderstorms over 100 miles away at odd times. This is caused by excessive amounts of heat trapped at ground level being released shortly after the sun goes down.
now i know, the dinosaurs had tremendously large concrete skate parks, but C'MON MAN! can you honestly say that humans are having no effect on the climate?
oh, and BTW - i'm not an alarmist. I'm not worried about what's gonna happen 10 years from now as a result of the industrial revolution...i'm worried about what's gonna happen 2-300 years from now. Oh well, i guess that big brown cloud that hovers over places like Denver, NY and LA are just "natural" parts of the earth's climate.

Well, i can pretty much say that i've seen quite a few anime classics
Akira, Vampyre Hunter D, Ghost in the Shell (which i own). But it's always seemed to me that many fans of the genre (yes, i'm still going to call it a genre) are too into the mob mentality. If something comes out, it's immediately worth watching because it's good.
personally, i thought Wings Of Honnemease(sp) sucked. I thought the Urotsockudoji series sucked. As far as i'm concerned, anime is just like everything else in this world. %99 of it sucks...the rest is DEFINITELY worth watching.

well...it sounds like they're getting agreements, just not from the authors of the works. Hence the posting of the article.
I think it basically comes down to fair use. I am a proponent of Napster because people are distributing the material for free. No one is making a buck when an mp3 changes hands (at least i have never done anything to financially support napster).
However, when people are trying to make a buck off of work that isn't theirs...personally i think that's fucked. If they were giving these theses away for free...i'd say tough shit to the authors. That's their deal. Free it should be. But if they're gonna make money off the author's work...the author should get a cut.

Developer: Boy, i sure like this AT&T Unix. Good thing it's open. I think i'll use some of the source for something
AT&T: Do that and we'll sue your bitch ass!
