    Well EXCUSE ME, but i've never tried it. I said to correct me if I'm wrong (meaning that I wasn't 100% sure). The thought of playing linux distros of games only even phased my mind as i was writing the post. And I did look Loki's support page, but i never saw that before, i guess(no on second thought, it's obvious that I did miss it) I didn't see it.

    So before burning somebody out you could be more polite about it...or are you just SOOO much better at being a harder prick than a porn star in the middle of a feature?

    But compared to windows, the number of linux games is a fly on the wall. Why would I buy games for two different platforms when I can buy Q3 for windows and get a patch to play it on linux if I really want to. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that there are any patches to get q3 for linux running in windows. And THAT is another reason I use Windows at all on my comp...

    Do they really expect linux gaming to take off right away? It's gonna take longer than just a few months to start selling reasonable amounts of units.

    Even though i LOVE linux I still use windows for gaming for the main reason that, right now at least, it's the better platform for games. Look at recent benchmarks. Although most of the differences are hairthin Winhoes still has the advantage. When more support is added for linux and more people start using it as a desktop, it'll start to really take off.

    My mom went back to school when she was 34 and went into computer engineering. She is now 46 and is curently a software engineer at Nortel.

    I believe this has to do with late baby boombers thinking whether they can handle going into such a complex field normally swamped by young fresh college grads. As soon as the current programming population ages, it'll all start to balance out, you'll see.

    O/S 2 is a nice OS, I would have used it more often had there been any real consumer use for it. Has it been open sourced? Or will it? Is IBM just going to drop it like that? It seems dumb that they would jsut drop it and forget about it just like that...

    These types of connections aren't meant to go directly to your home, they are meant to connect ISPs and large servers. They are designed to carry bulk and become the backbone of the internet. So don't think for a second you'll be getting one of these to your home anytime soon.

    Let's never hope more than two operating systems become major, otherwise compatibility problems will arise. As much as we all hate microsoft, we can never deny that the fact that windows is on 89% of all computers is what MADE compatibility between computers. Of course, if the PC industry grew up with more OSes, there would probably be more and better standards....sigh.

    If they even tried to get "ownership" of basic concepts then the whole video game market as we know it would come crashing down. And this doesn't just apply to video games. This would mean origional concepts for everything could be owned.

    Does Netscape and Microsoft have to pay some guy who designed the concept of the browswer?

    I think Nortel got 9 terrabits a second a few months ago, but it was over a 10km long line and not a 100km one.

Tell us WHAT YOU would want to see on Slashdot. and if you don't want to hear stories on certain subjects, there are ways of moderating them down in the preferences, so stop whining. If you don't like it, go someplace else. yeesh

    My mom has gotten a free state of the art(for the time anyway :-)) computer from her work (Nortel) 3 years ago. It was a P200 MMX with 64MB RAM and a 5 gig HD. Nortel just didn't show off like Ford and now Intel. Although I only use it as a Firewall now, it was a nice upgrade from the 386 we had before it...

    This kinda sounds familiar...Ten years ago my mom returned to college and signed up for compter engineering tech. She knew dick all, so little in fact that she put her disks in the wrong way and couldn't figure out why CDs were being used in computers(she thought they were for music only).

    Now she's a major software engineer for Nortel...so I don't think this has anything to do with unqualified students(women). It's just that they aren't trying hard enough because they are so uninterested in learning geekdom that they don't care. People today are saying "oh, Computers...they are the FUTURE, man!" Then they realize that they'll have to spend a lot of thier time in front of a computer, against the atmosphere most of them grew up in in high school.

    From the WinNT box at school and the linux box I've got running at home, I've drawn this conclusion:

    Windows servers are more feature packed, but more unstable, where it is the opposite for linux. So when it's actualy running properly and not crashing, winHoes is better. But for what our school needs, and what I need, they should be using linux. sigh. My school board is just afraid to try something new.

    My teacher would LOVE to put linux as at least the server, but the board techs would have none of it. Apparently it violates some agreement they have with Microsoft. SIGH SIGH SIGH!!

    Transmeta's best chip runs at 500 MHz which puts it significantly slower than current desktop CPUs.

    Look at Windows 95 when it was released. They probably spent just as much on hype and advertising as they did on building the damn thing. If they spent more money testing and debuging thier software, they wouldn't be hated by so many people. How can Microsoft get respect from consumers if it lies and neglects them?

    Here in Canada you pay $20 a month and you get unlimited calling in Canada. That means I can spend 50 hours talking to my neighbour or 50 hours talking to somebody 6000 km away. It all shows up as $20.

    And what country is going to regulate all of THIS? What if some guy from some unfriendly country posts illegal stuff on his site? The internet is not run by ony one country. That is why it is almost impossible to control. So unless they "chop" the internet into distinct country zones where you can't leave your country, there's nothing stoping anyone from doing something illegal.

    It's gonna take hundreds of international treaties to even begin regulating the internet. How long does ONE treaty usually take?

    I have no doubt Micro$oft has the capabilites to quickly and effectivly get security patches deistibuted, but the question is if I, alone, find a major security flaw and report it to Microsoft..will they hurry and get out a patch, or tryand cover it up and hope it doesn't become common knowledge? We all KNOW they have done this before...what's to stop them from doing this again? Christopher Hylarides
