Let's see ALL the data, and let's not see the E-mail at all -- E-mail isn't data.
You do realize that some of the emails are about hiding data from public view, obstructing freedom of information requests, and campaign to discredit a peer reviewed journal that published something that disagreed with their public stance, right?
If there is one thing I know for sure, its that at least one of the skeptics is entirely open about the data and methodology (with source code, only free tools, etc..) he uses, and he even seeks input from anyone willing to help via his blog. That man is Steve McIntyre.
Publicly funded scientists should be forced to open up their data and methodology, with prison terms for them if they don't. Its time they stopped using public money to boost their own careers while playing fast and loose in their good ol' boy club of like-minded conspirators.
Yes this "small price to pay" works very well in an environment where everything must be *certified* before being deployed... oh wait... no, it doesn't. Its all fun and games until half of your employees can't perform their work because some dipshit deployed before testing.
I just love the way Americans stick up for their companies...
New around here? Slashdot always talks down towards American businesses like Microsoft, Apple, and Comcast. Also, copyright defenders around here are few and far between.
Millions of people surely saw or heard the message. Not one of them verified their suspicions that the evacuation order was bullshit by calling the State Police?
It doesn't get any more sobering than this. The people of the State of Connecticut will not be paying attention to emergency alerts piped through their Wii's and XBOX's.
Thats a different tune from the post of yours that I first responded to.
To be quite frank I am almost certain that the complexity of supporting I.E. is a barrier to entry into your trade, and as such you benefit monetarily by having the expert knowledge required to support all the browsers.
Remember that market prices are what they are for a reason.
I posted this elsewhere but it deserves some more exposure.
In 2005 the State of Connecticut issued an alert on their emergency system, which interrupted both midday television and radio broadcasts. The alert was a Statewide evacuation order.
Pretty serious shit must be afoot, right?
State police later reported that NOBODY called them to find out what was going on, and obviously people didn't evacuate Connecticut.
The emergency system is stupid. It doesnt matter what it says on there.. if I look outside and don't directly witness something akin to Armageddon, I'm not leaving the house. If something akin to Armageddon IS heppening, then quite frankly I don'y need an alert system to tell me about it.
No, I don't want extra money. I do the optimizing without requesting extra money.
Its already in your wage. Really. If you didn't do this "extra" work as you call it, your clients would dry up or you would have to charge significantly less.. because you would be doing a shitty job.
Connecticut emergency management officials have apologized for an erroneous message sent to state broadcasters today saying an evacuation of the state had been ordered. State emergency management officials believe someone pressed the wrong button. Instead of running a test of the emergency alert system, midday television viewers and radio listeners were told that the state was being evacuated........... State police said they received no calls related to the erroneous alert.
BUT making pages work in IE takes extra effort and time (=money) BECAUSE Microsoft doesn't care about standards.
You want things easier AND you want to make more money? Well holy fucking shit... thats fucking original.
I don't think that you've thought this through. If you can bang out web pages 50% faster, than so can your competition, and since time is money... guess what... you will still earn the same basic living, but will have to have twice as many clients in order to do so.
No matter how you look at this type of computer, its just not going to compete in the general computing space because you can't design a memory cache that can cope with the forced random access to memory.
If the end-users dont give a shit what hardships you have to go through as a web developers (and to be honest, Firefox, Safari and Opera users dont give a shit about your troubles either), then why the hell should Microsoft?
Make yer shit work. Thats what you are paid to do.
Nobody is stopping you, or anyone else, from getting Gimp code and changing the UI. If nobody wanted to do that, tough luck.
Yep. Tough luck for GIMP and its developers. Being removed from the default installation of a major distro is a major punch in the nose. Maybe they don't care.. or maybe they do. Either way, this reflects poorly.
Its as if you do not think that Apple, Microsoft, and even Adobe aren't investing lots of time and money researching usability. Thats right! Its something that can be researched, and there are even experts in the field.
One interface really can be superior to another, and these days there are only minor differences between the big players for a reason. If you aren't going to do the research, then its probably a good idea to copy the people who have. Seriously.
GIMP is clearly designed by developers for themselves, instead of by developers for users. Its all rather sad because GIMP, feature-wise, is pretty much on-par in most ways with Photoshop.
I've tried several times to use GIMP for my photo editing needs, but every time I run away precisely because the UI is so bad. Can't find the feature, or its implemented unintuitively, or I need to do 3 operations to do something common that in Photoshop only takes 1 operation.
If I worked at the electric company, and I wanted to rob your house, all I'd need is your address, and I could physically monitor your house to see when you're on vacation.
The difference here is that while you present the case where the burglar targets a specific individual, going through the trouble of watching the house for long periods...
...the collection of this data allows them to target whoever is convenient today because now they have access to the data from equipment installed to watch everyones houses for long periods.
Didn't they just get caught with a GPL violation because they didn't know what's inside their own new download tool?
The job of writing that tool was contracted out to a 3rd party. The authors violated the contract, obviously. Microsoft certainly also has some responsibility in the matter, and it looks like they are living up to it.
Now, are you suggesting that the owners of the font contracted the work out, or something?
..because one of their businesses is fonts. They had a vested interest in them as it pertains to Microsoft products. Its like Toyota not checking out whats inside the new hybrids that hit the market this year. It is inconceivable to think that they didn't know.
Nonsense. Utter nonsense. The President's job is to accomplish his agenda that he was elected to accomplish. To do that he needs to explain his program and counter the objections of his opponents.
You come off like the president is a servant of the people, but then label it HIS agenda. First and foremost is that he does not seem to be living up to his campaign promises.
One of the things Obama had run on, something he harped on often, was that he wasn't going to be partisan. Does blocking the only major right of center news organization sound to you like he isn't trying to be partisan?
You say that he has no obligation to help them and I say that you are wrong. He IS obligated to help them in the same manner that he helps the other major news organizations, because he IS a public servant. A free press is a central tenant of our foundation, not to be discriminated against because of what criticisms they might have. All forms of discrimination are wrong. Early in my life, Democrats seemed to have a clear and unwavering stance against discrimination but I guess those days are over.
A news organization throwing their hat in the ring for a particular person, viewpoint, philosophy, organization, or party is nothing new. The danger in allowing discrimination of coverage is that it can motivate the squashing of news stories. Would ABC be more or less likely to cover the next scandal within the executive branch, if there was already precedent set for being blocked access? Think about it.
I'm now wondering which one of these guys you are. Seriously.
This is SLASHDOT, bozo. Information wants to be free.

Supply and demand, moron.
Under Empire 2.0, the Department of Mental Health is monitoring some Facebook posts in an effort to spot suicidal behavior
Thanks guys! You are making a real contribution.

The problem extends far beyond the fact that GIMP spawns more windows than Internet Explorer 4.0 does when visiting an prOn site.
This.

..and AT&T was purchased by SBC Communications (a baby bell), which then changed its name to AT&T.
Can you hear us now?

If this can stop projectiles from penetrating the wall, then think about the protection it could offer from tornados and hurricanes.
I am imagining a bag made up of blast-proof wallpaper rolling down the road, filled with the pulverized remains of a human and his things.

Only (very) loosely related but deserving mention is the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.
This encyclopedia has proven very useful for me in that I have avoided 'solving' many problems with it.
Why? Just because its on their desktop?
