There are two types of libertarians: those who believe in shrinking the government and staying true to the ideals of liberty and freedom; and those, like the Libertarian Party in the United States, who believe in radically cutting the government and pulling out of everything, leaving people to fend for themselves. This is not what libertarianism is supposed to be.

The first type of libertarian that I mentioned is similar to the republicans of old, those who believed in personal freedoms and privacy (I can't say that I'm very fond of the direction that the party has chosen to go, defining itself by snuggling up to megacorps). That's the type of libertarian I'd vote for. I could never vote for the second sort, and I never will; I don't believe that their selfishness will get them anywhere.

Summarized? Libertarianism is a wonderful ideology, but as usual, people have managed to fuck it up.

Regulated? You didn't take high school history, did you? The Industrial Revolution offered jobs alright - jobs with absolutely horrible conditions, no guarantee of continual employment, beatings; jobs where you were more slave than human, essentially owned by your employer. It wasn't until the fights for the right to unionize that these jobs became more tolerable. I consider the 8 hour workday one of the greater accomplishments in semi-recent history.

Before you spout off next time, I suggest that you read a high school history text. You may be surprised that the world does not form itself around your whims and perceptions.

  24. Interfaces in the modern OS on Is UNIX An OS? · · Score: 1
Users wanted visual metaphors (graphical user interfaces), multimedia and much more besides just a kernel and a shell

Did they? I don't know. I started using computers in the mid to late 80s, as a child, back in those glorious days of incompatabilities. I had an old Xerox 8086 with DOS 3.0, and was happy with that for many years. I liked playing around in DOS, and quickly learned WordPerfect. I never once thought, "Man, this sucks, what I really need is a visual metaphor."

I know, I know. Kids learn well, and pick things up quickly. But I think that there's more to it than that: I learned computers with no preconceived notions of how computers should be. I was not told, "You should have a graphical interface; command lines are for cretins". I was not told, "The command line is the One True Way." I just learned things. I think that part of the problem with these "modern" OSs (Windows and Macintosh to be specific, I've used BeOS once and actually really liked it) is that they try to dictate style. That's why I'm really partial to Unix and X: I can have a powerful command line and GUI, and I can customize both to my heart's content.

This is how "a modern OS" should be, in my opinion. Choice. Visual metaphors are fine for most people most of the time, but sometimes I just want a shell prompt.
