  1. Is it STILL Windows? Do you still need it? on Windows Admins Need To Prepare For GUI-Less Server · · Score: 1

Is it still Windows without the GUI? Isn't a lot of the legacy code that bogs down Windows mostly about the GUI, old games and old dos programs which wouldn't be an issue for a pure server edition of "Windows?".

Is all that crap gone now? If it is, then why do you need windows at all?

What does the new windows do, as a gui-less server OS, that the various *nixes don't do?

Many people only stay with an IT job 1.5 - 2 years anyway. If this is MORE true now because of the economy, you might as well take the vacation while you get it, because you employment is transitory anyway and your life isn't.

Better to do like the self-help gurus say and save up 3 - 6 months worth of living money in an emergency fund.

I have a few friends who have left high pressure work to spend more time with families - they are very happy and don't miss being threatened over their bread and butter with termination for not working 16 hour days.

That is the crux of it. In threads like this one ( this subject is frequently reincarnated on slashdot ) not enough emphasis is placed on the fact that there ARE other organizations to work for with DIFFERENT philosophies on how to do business.

Yes, the economy is bad, but under normal circumstances too many people think they don't have a choice ( I was there myself ) and don't try to find a better job.

"The Now Habit" by Dr. Neil Fiore is a self help book for managing procrastination. One of the most interesting things I have read in it is that workaholics are NOT high achievers.

The big difference ( shown by research ) between high achievers and workaholics is that high achievers "play hard and work hard"......they take their leisure time seriously, they know its value in making them capable of working hard and they take more time off than other people with giving themselves their blessing to do so, without guilt.

Mice aren't people. Most animal testing doesn't work because humans are different from the animals experimented with. That is why phase 1 (human testing) trials are so dangerous.

As far as type 2 diabetes goes, it is the result of chronically overeating. It is like continuing to pump gas into your car long after the tank is filled.

You can prevent type 2 diabetes simply by making sure you are hungry ( stomach rumbling ) before you eat, not eating crap and getting some exercise.

  15. No Laws Better Than Compromised Laws on Japan Plans To Scrap Nuclear Plants After 40 Years · · Score: 1

It reminds me of the rent control laws in my city. At some point people got rent control laws passed, but were forced to put in compromises that sabotaged the goals of the law. Landlords were given the right to raise rent, significantly after a person was moved out and landlords were given the right to order people to move out for no particular reason, just with 60 days notice. So you get a situation of people getting kicked out of their homes every few years.

This sounds like some good people in Japan started off with a progressive idea for shutting down the worst nuclear power plants and perhaps encouraging their replacement with better models/designs.
