Would using this software have protected a person against Carrier IQ's rootkit? I don't know anything about smart phone tech. I was actually thinking of getting one until this story broke. If I can gut the software and use something like a cyanogenmod to protect myself against privacy abuse that would be golden.
Caridac Surgeons Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Caldwell Esselsytn --- the researchers who made the diet President Clinton used to lose 20+ pounds, have proven, clinically, that their diets reverse hardening of the arteries. Both Researchers have books for sale on Amazon.
I bet the cost of either book and simply eating differently is a lot cheaper than even a generic Lipitor.
I did development on a web application that was used as service, that went through frequent customizations on many deadlines. I had to work with many non-IT people, some barely literate.
They could be nasty.
Many of them lacked an appreciation that something complex was being made.
Great point. I live in the Washington D.C. Metro area.
We recently had a much needed highway extension open up called the ICC ( Intercountry Connector ). Newspaper articles have been reporting that it has taken 50 years to complete. Most of that time has been about court battles.
A technical degree isn't a "higher education", it is very involved, very sophisticated job training.
Someone can have a doctorate in computer science, math or engineering and not be truly educated. That kind of education is what the University system was all about when it was created.
That system was created by the upper classes who had no concerns about needing to earn a living. The value of a liberal education was seen, however. People who had degrees earned more. The non-rich started seeking out college degrees.
However, over time, people weren't educated to the value of "higher education" - what it is -- and an "education became confused with taking classes in ANYTHING after highschool ( and paying a lot for it ).
This move by China, IMHO, is good in spirit, but ignorant in the application. They will produce a generation of highly trained tradespeople, but otherwise uneducated. Maybe that is what they want. Uneducated people are easier to control.
As far as the U.S. goes I think academia plays an expensive game that students get to foot the bill for in massive debt or lives of diminished prosperity.
Many new college students are not ready for college. They don't know how the world works and they are at a point in their lives where they are not going to listen to their parents. Many don't know who they are either.
Majors that pay out with good jobs are not sexy and liberal arts classes can be fun. Many people that young also aren't sure of where they would be happy doing.
Universities know these things, yet let students hang themselves by signing up for classes that will not lead to financially rewarding careers. Universities make money while these students spend their families money on classes that go nowhere and universities make money when these students borrow more money to come back and tack classes that will have those results.
Universities could do much to prevent that by requiring that freshmen go through career testing and career counseling during their first year. Believe it or not, there are good tests for helping people to figure out what field they would like and from there they can pick one that pays.
However, that would not bring in as much revenue to universities.
Gmail is already doing this for their ugly new email interface. There is a popup in their lower right corner of their screen that will NOT go away until you "try the new look"
BUT he needs to check his employment contract first. Very common for the employer to say they own everything you create, even if it's not on company time. And if he works for jerks, I wouldn't assume they won't take the project from him when he leaves if it has any value at all.
No problem.
The point is that he wants a way to get his enthusiasm back, not make money. His employers don't need to be aware of the code he makes for his own pleasure, on his time and in his own home.
If he makes something really excellent that he later wants to share, after he has long left his job he can release it under a pen name as an open source project. If he wants to make money from it all he has to do is say he made the software in the 3 months since he left his job rather than the last 3 months he was there.
Doing so is incredibly effective for showing you what skills you need to learn. Interviewing ( doing something about the lame job ) will make you feel empowered. Interviewing will show you that there are other employers with different ( & better ) ways of doing things out there and that things don't have to be as they are. The more you interview, the better you will get at it.
1. Get out of your current job. Even if you have to take a cut in pay or otherwise take a lesser position. I fought the good fight at my old job, doing better for my own satisfaction, even if nobody appreciated it ( and nobody did ). It helped. However, once I finally left position I was amazed at how much my mood lifted and how I got back some enthusiasm for free.
Being at a job you don't like is like a rock in your shoe. You may learn to tolerate it better, but you will never see improvement like you do with getting the rock out of your shoe.
2. Learn new stuff
3. Take on projects in your spare time for nothing other than your PERSONAL SATISFACTION.
4. Take a class.
5. Join a programming meetup group.
6. Do a side project where you make something for someone and get paid for it.
7. Be aware that, AS A GROUP, programmers tend to be introverted defeatists who are scared to move out of their comfort zones. Learn to ignore these people.
"I don't want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won't want it. I've got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that's all I want."
Of course it is also about money for him. The reason that Apple copycats CAN exist was because Apple products cost much more than the knock-offs.
Assuming you could enforce such a law, the drug works and the non-rich could afford it simply deny the drug to anyone who has had children in their lives.
The population of the world will be 7 billion by the end of the year.
"According to former Republican representative Bob Inglis, being conservative means dealing in facts. He suggests that energy and climate policy warrants a conservative approach based on science and accountability, rather than a populist approach based on denial and wishful thinking. "
The GOP has been at the forefront of making those issues into issues of denial and wishful thinking. Please.
I find the idea of ebooks abhorrent. I will become a last adopter, when not using them will cause problems for my life. At that point I believe the format wars will be over. I'll let other people pay for the development of those things.
There really is a lock of money out there right now and manned space flight is expensive.
The government is in a hole right now because taxes ( via the Bush tax cuts ) are the lowest on wealthy Americans since the 1950s. Add to that two wars paid for with loans ( mostly benefiting the wealthy through defense spending and securing resources like oil ) and a bailout of the financial sector ( also paid out to the wealthiest Americans, no convictions ).
If you want manned space flight back, stop supporting going to wars on a whim and stop supporting candidates ( i.e. the Republicans ) who want to keep tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and who want to reduce taxes on the wealthiest Americans further.
does it take into account that so MUCH more coal has been used and is being used than nuclear power.
How many more nuclear debacles would there be if every municipality in the US had a nuclear power plant the way there is a coal fired electrical plant now?
Would radioactive zones that people had to stay away from become a common every day occurrence?
Would using this software have protected a person against Carrier IQ's rootkit? I don't know anything about smart phone tech. I was actually thinking of getting one until this story broke. In other words, the answer is "no" :-)
It seems like every time a distro tries to innovate they get a lot of screaming from the linux community.
There is this change, the screaming about Ubuntu going with Unity, screaming with every change GNOME makes.
Is the FOSS really about innovation or just mouthing the words?
I've been putting off buying a smart phone for years. First, because I didn't want another monthly bill and I rarely use my cell phone as it is.
Then the controversy with the iPhone and Android tracking your location.
Now the Android is logging keystrokes ( I would bet the iPhone is as well ).
The other week I found out I can get a pay as you go smart phone which fits my needs perfectly. I was planning to start shopping for an Android.
I think I will save myself some money and my privacy by skipping that chore for a few more months.

Such technology would make for a very useful and fun web site ( or app ). Just upload a picture or feed a URL and it will tell you if it is fake.
Yup.. works both ways.
I did development on a web application that was used as service, that went through frequent customizations on many deadlines. I had to work with many non-IT people, some barely literate.

I wish I could mod your comment up more. That is what I wanted to say, but you beat me to it and said it more succinctly than I would have.

I read the "about" on the MINT site. It stated that was based on Debian and Ubuntu. How much of the latter ?
Is it basically Ubuntu with the multimedia futzing taken care of for you and without Unity?
Would there be a learning curve for Ubuntu users?
If MINT is an Ubuntu derivative, does it get updated as often as Ubuntu?

Something tells me they aren't going to be funding Muller's research anymore
I guess I am going Apple
