You have to pay your taxes if you want municipal services. If you wave it away claiming you don't want government interference in your life, then the firefighters will not interfere with fire burning down your house. The guy sadly got exactly what he argued for in the first place when he turned the city down.
If he's refusing to cough up the password because of the content of his hard drive, taking the four months of minimum security jail may be a better deal than a lifetime branding as a terrorist or a pedophile porn peddler.
Let's make sure first that it has, you know, oxygen, and not one of those 95% carbon dyoxide air content some younger planet lacking vegetation may have. Or one of those fancypants sulfuric acid atmospheres that melts your lungs.
Even if this insane lawsuit was defeated not by common sense but by narrow word of the law, keep in mind that insane lawsuits sue based specifically on the word of the law to begin with, using it to further insane agendas. This is just a stupid lawsuit dying by its own sword.

How exactly is one supposed to do this? What is the process for building trust vis-a-vis apps when the only protection you receive from your service provider is "don't walk into dark alleys you don't trust"?
