I seem to recall a big panic over some fundamental security flaws in Snaps, something about them leveraging the worst ways X11 is written. Unless it's some convoluted way to try and progress what seems to be the IPv6 of the display server world (Mir / Wayland), isn't spreading this thing to other distros a bit of a bad idea?
And Feminism is now considered a Very Bad Thing by large chunks of the internet (I still like it, but I see/understand it differently to how most seem to).
It's hated for two primary reasons by my view:
1) Some of the newer third wave stuff often associated with Tumblr has gone a bit too far the other way and started to push man-hate, and they're so loud and vocal that they've managed to give the illusion of hijacking the entire movement, which is moderate and supposed to help men as well as women (by for example changing the image of feminine away from something to somehow be ashamed of)
2) Younger generations are less keen to associate themselves with the sins of their fathers i.e. historical misogyny and privilege. As they were born into a world where equality is encouraged and we don't have so much of an indoctrination into the old patriarchy, they feel that those who tell males they're privileged and should be mindful of feminist issues, are actually trying to oppress men and make people feel guilty for being born with the wrong genitals.
Sadly, this has manifested itself in quite rampant hate towards all things interpreted as feminist, which includes anything aimed at females or featuring a female heavy cast (Ghost Busters). One could rightly argue other factors (like whether Ghost Busters is crap regardless of gender) but I do think it gets silly sometimes as I do see a heavily anti-anything-that-smells-feminist bias out there at the moment.
As always I think both sides are simply human and have their own worries and issues of defensiveness. But at the moment are more likely to dehumanise and attack each other, unfortunately, or go on mass sabotage efforts like this.
The impression I got was that they actually want to encourage free speech and make people feel safe expressing their views - I don't imagine it's actually an anti Trump voter thing. What they're trying to stop is all the bullying and death threats, and there's plenty of that happening on both sides of the political fence, so it should actually *help* the Trump voters express themselves.
The internet's been especially bad for this ever since all that "gamergate" shit where suddenly if you express any hint of slight left-leaning views you're slapped with that massively overused SJW acronym and all kind of derision for that, if you're more towards the right and criticise actual hard-left views you're "OMG misogynist death eater shitlord from Hell" and there's like nothing in between any more. It's ridiculous. And nerds are the worst for it now. What happened to when we were all about the Star Trek "love and harmony between different cultures and people who hold different views" kind of stuff and could actually talk about social issues and whatnot without hurling abuse at each other? I think that's all Twitter's after. I'm all for it.
Indeed, sometimes that's a good thing (like the stupid cookie law where the ICO backed off and effectively said "you know what, we find it hard work too. Do what you want.") sometimes bad.
I seem to recall Cameron is itching to remove us from the ECHR at the earliest possible opportunity anyway, the only thing standing in his way is the small issue of peace with Northern Ireland (Good Friday Agreement). Somewhat ironic as he's using terrorism as an excuse but I remember the 80s/90s and they seemed a lot better at blowing shit up in our cities than ISIS (or whatever they're called this week).
Suggestions for alternative password managers that work on all the same platforms? So Linux would need to be included (meaning 1password is out), and iOS and Android as well.
I know there's keepass for the desktop, though I seem to recall the Linux client being a choice of either using some old file format or the Windows version on WINE, and don't know how it'd conveniently sync with a mobile.
Indeed, basically there are plenty of crazies on both sides.
What's bothering me is that in recent years (say the past 5 or so) the politics of the internet - at least what I've seen of them - have become extremely polarised. More and more people are diving to those nutjob extreme ends of things (e.g. 'right' and 'left' to simplify) and in a way kind of waging war on each other. This leaves the centre, where much of the civil discussion and negotiation would happen, feeling a bit empty. If you try to mediate and calmly present a point of one side to the other, it's very easy to get dismissed as 'one of them' (e.g. 'an SJW') and one of the extreme ones to boot.
This was particularly my experience in trying to get my head around gamergate in terms with trying to engage with any of it... "Well maybe in some cases there could be natural flaws and biases in journ.." "SEXIST GAMERGATE FOURCHAN SCUM!" "Well you know guys, to be fair maybe women could sometimes be better repre.." "SJW TUMBLRISTA FAGGOT!" It was just impossible.
>the word has completely lost its meaning in the last few years
Seems so. The irony on UD there is that it talks about someone shouting at a feminist for saying they don't like the colour pink as it's too "prissy", yet most usage I've seen of SJW recently (e.g. from the gamergate crowd) has been synonymous with "militant feminist", which in a way seems like a contradiction.
Frankly it's all too confusing to me. SJW seems to have evolved to mean "person I disagree with", pretty much - it's a quick label to throw at someone to dismiss their argument. See also "right winger" and other such misused terms.
Instead of splitting into "SJW" and "anti SJW" factions and screeching at each other I'd much prefer to return to the days of Wheaton's Law (don't be a dick). This would mean actually listening to each others views though.
It will find a way to survive- maybe by being less obnoxious, but more likely by finding new workarounds, after a brief year or two of peace like that glorious time in the early days of popup blocking before they started using JavaScript based pop-over 'windows' instead.
I actually don't mind the tracking, or ads in general (it was not knowing about being tracked that annoyed me more). If I'm looking up something sensitive I'll use Private Browsing - the rest of the time I will get ads for things that actually do interest me, because they know e.g. I visit slashdot and enjoy geeky things. And perhaps by offering me more relevant ads, they will feel less inclined to overload me with intrusive ones to be "more effective".
Ads that pop over content, cause you to play "guess the real download link" or auto play though can die in a fire. So can most of Youtube's advertising.
What about it? There's no point in using every combination of examples or we'd be here all day.
For the record though, I also think it's wrong to start yelling "get out of r country, terrorist muslamic scum!!!" to anyone who happens to follow the Islamic faith. That is another example of being a dick to someone, a religious person in this example, when they've not provoked you. And a few extremists do not represent provocation from an entire religious group.
This is the problem with "lists". I subscribe more to Wheaton's Law aka "Don't Be a Dick". Why not just not be a dick to anyone, including religious people?
As for my views on religion (as a non religious person), it may be a choice but if the individual doesn't force their beliefs on others then I see no reason to attack them without provocation. Obviously it's different with the nutjob "God hates Fags" types who need to be told that they're being assholes and projecting their personal beliefs on other people (i.e. there's your provocation), but that's a vocal minority - most are just passively living by their personal rulebook and condemn the violent idiots like Westboro et al, and don't deserve a torrent of abuse for something they've not done.
I don't know, but pretty much everywhere else on the internet everyone is screaming "haha only 3 cores? Android has had octo core processors since 1973" - I suppose this is one small step towards shutting them up (though Apple haters will usually find something else 'superior' to be smug about)
If your spouse is going to the lengths of covertly grabbing your phone, placing plastic over your screen, making sure you don't notice it, grabbing it again when you've used it, removing the plastic and taking it to a copier.. 1) What an awesomely geeky spouse, where do I find one? Or do I just marry a copper? 2) You have much bigger problems to worry about than the security of your fingerprint scanner. But you might want to search for your divorce solicitors using Private Browsing on a throwaway pay-as-you-go phone and throw it into the canal afterwards. Just in case.
It should be perfectly fine for the average person protecting their credit card details from thieves and their porn from their partners. People who go to these lengths would surely be either: Really determined for some reason (in which case they'd probably social engineer it out of you or something) People who'd just cut your finger off The police (at which point they've already obtained your phone and fingerprint) The NSA (who probably already have a backdoor) Either way, it's more secure than your typical 4 digit PIN or pattern unlock.
If you need more than that, you'd probably use some tedious-to-type ultra secure battery horse staple thing anyway.
Similarly, whether you choose sides (or choose a tinfoil hat and avoid cloud services altogether) is up to you. That's how the world works you see, people make personal decisions, they don't usually take orders off people on the internet.
3 years ago I liked what Google were doing and disliked what Apple were doing so I switched to Google Now, vice versa. There's no brand loyalty here, but these happen to be the two biggest mobile OS manufacturers (sorry but Blackberry and Microsoft are irrelevant by comparison IMO) and in direct competition, so damn right I'll pick a side when one is doing something I like and the other is doing something I don't.
Whilst you do sound like a channer (no offence - Anonymous is what they call themselves, and your writing style reminds me of one I know, but they do sometimes pretend to "know things") I wish I could mod you up as this is exactly what I'm suspecting as well. I really don't think the corporations are necessarily all Evil Devils out to collude with the NSA and do all sorts of nasty things with the data of individuals.
They're successful financially but surely this doesn't automatically mean they have no conscience.

Yeah, this. It wasn't recognisable at all! I couldn't do better, to be fair, but still - poor effort.
I took a "gap year" between finishing school and starting job hunting to slob around at home playing Everquest.
Don't do that.
*hides*

Interesting thought. By this logic is it possible that Snowden's "leaks" were actually part of the plan?
Nah, on the latter you're thinking of Windows 95 ;)

FYI that title was meant to say "first got popup blocking" but got silently truncated.

Isn't Firefox open source? So fairly simple to make a fork without it?
Definitely wouldn't use it as a reason to jump into NSA/Google's arms though!
You're going to cheer for DASH like that?
Louder.
Nothing succeeds like a toothless budgie. Other birds flocked to the gene pool following the same example.

I'll use what I want to, thank you.
