Sounds like a big leap, how does one manager getting fired lead to the CEO stepping down? Glad someone understands corporate-speak I guess!

Haha... yes, in an otherwise superb game and story (IMO) that part did seem a bit retarded.

In my head, I always pretended that after Cid actually spoke some sense on the subject (that hey, it's science, do we really want to steal that materia just because it's Shinra?) and ultimately says "do whatever you feel is best" that Cloud decided not to take it. The game does leave you with that option and leaves the story ambiguous enough that it works either way. As the player though I still nab it.. need that Master Materia later on ;)

I'm with you there. vs.XIII sounds potentially great - if they can get it right.

But it's the last chance with me as well. After XI, XII, XIII to an extent (at least it had interesting characters again) and XIV, it's in desperate need of a good game to prove that its magic didn't die when the founding folks left to create Mistwalker. If Versus turns out to be a flop, I think we can stick a fork in the franchise. Quina style :P

That is how I read the sentence (without the "you or") and felt suitably old!

In some ways XIV sounds very much like EQ from 1999. Basic interface (clunky and non-customisable at the time), no clear definition of where to go or what to do etc. Thing is most of the rest of the MMORPG world including EQ itself has moved far far along since then!

The UI issues don't surprise me too much. Square(Soft|Enix) have never exactly been great at PC stuff, as I remember from the bug-ridden VII, VIII and the hours of hell I went through making XI not look like an old Amiga game or control like whoever ported it never once sat in front of the keyboard and tried it. They should probably stick to the consoles.

This is Slashdot we're talking about. "Apple quick to patch serious security flaw and protect its users' devices, whilst incidentally breaking the most alarming jailbreak technique to date" (which I'm sure plenty of people will have sent in) doesn't generate as many clicks as "Big mean corporate giant Apple stop you from jailbreaking your device and stomp all over your freeeeeedom". Simple as that really.

Of course, anyone who knows what they're doing and does enjoy the jailbreak when it's available (like myself), can simply have the sense back up their shsh blobs through Cydia, avoid updating, and apply the community-developed security patch instead. Or if it matters that much, buy a less restricted phone.

In my experience of it, I ended up spending more time telling it what not to do than I spent telling 'normal' packages what to do. YMMV - I can see how it can be a big timesaver in formal reporting and documentation, perhaps it's a case of using the correct tool for the job (i.e. don't bother writing a basic letter with the thing!)

Ballmer has all the charm and likability of a genital wart, not really someone you want as the figurehead of the company. For all the faults Borg Gates had, he still had a personality beyond "ape" and even had a modicum of respect (from some) as a geek. One who bought/copied/stole everything, but still...

I have a feeling Steve Jobs may find himself going through this soon as well. Even as an Apple fanboy I'm starting to see him as an embarrassment. The way he talks to customers is atrocious, as is his handling of the iphone4 issues. He deserves credit for revolutionizing Apple in the late 90s and early 00s, but nowadays I think a lot of the credit for the good things to come from there would go to others like Jony Ive.

That's what's luring me to it anyway, and the more I hear about it being alive and well in the modern world the further it shifts up the to-do list.

Some ask why bother when you have the internet and cell phones. The answer perhaps lies in metaphores: why build up LFS (Linux From Scratch) when you can install Ubuntu? Why climb mountains when you can get up there by helicopter? I dare even say, why build a PC when you can buy a ready-built Mac? (I do both actually). Why paint a scene when you can take a photo? Why make music when you can download some off the internet and play that? Etc.

But everything I can find online now suggests that the light is hard-wired into the camera's power supply, so I guess getting a laptop with one of those lights would work after all.
