  1. find the edges? but size is useful and easy? on Choosing Better-Quality JPEG Images With Software? · · Score: 1

Assuming you can find similar images programmatically you can probably use size to get a good guess. Alternately I know there are algorithms to find edges. Edges are where most jpeg artifacts show up. If you could then look at the gradient from the edges smooth ones will likely be the better image.

  3. Death of the Macintosh on What To Expect From Apple's Rumored MacPad · · Score: 4, Interesting

The Mac Pad has some possibility to be real simply because you would have to be blind to not see that the end of the Macintosh as a basic consumer device is coming. Anyone that went to WWDC can tell you the focus was entirely on iPhone OS.

The Macintosh will still be around as high end media creation devices and servers. Think of iPhone, Touch and potential MacPad or new consumer devices as media consumption devices. They will have basic editing ability (see iLife and iWork) but that's it. Who really needs a quad quad xenon to play MP3s and watch videos. Also look at the game market on iPhone OS. That's where the money is and that's where Apple is going.

Retire in place is what it's called. Just keep your current boring job then do what you want after work and weekends. Take those long vacation times to build up the new "thing". Then jump ship after your lack of effort at work has brought the company to a slow down and near collapse.

I disagree. If the company was indeed selling the units at a loss, then that is their own stupidity. Customers taking advantage of what you offer ("open, hackable, access point for $50!") is their legal right and frankly is sensible. I disagree that giving into corporate demands at every turn is "political savvy". The company screwed them (and possibly broke the law), so they are warning others not to deal with that company, and it seems like they are going to try to find other hardware suppliers in the future. This is exactly how free markets are suppose to work. When a vendor violates the trust of the customers the customers advertise this and the vendor looses new customers. Customers can always "not buy" the product and buy something else.

    Yes exactly.
If H2 is such a fantastic thing then why is it typically vented off at the well head when it comes up with NG. Because of the storage difficulties! In this case the energy used to get H2 is minimal but the energy needed for storage does not make it viable to capture. When H2 comes up with NG it has to be cheeper than making it even with solar cells. Yes the Buckyballs are a cool idea if they make storage better. Go team go.

I think we all have differing ideas on what changing congress (Government) means. Lets start with something simple. Ask all candidates "what present of an individuals income should they pay in taxes?" It could even be a graduated rate. Then let government do what ever they like with that amount of "Limited" money. No limits on the money they spend seems to be the big problem.

Thermodynamics anyone? If we need to use energy to extract hydrogen then why not use the energy to do other real work the first place? Hydrogen is not a power source but it may make a reasonably efficient battery or power storage medium. Let's not forget that.
