But seriously, Ubuntu is now the dominant OS in the space (surprise!) largely because Canonical has been focused here since 2009, and they've made some very astute decisions backing the right technologies, e.g. shifting quickly from Eucalyptus to Open Stack.
Host your own if you don't like the fee. How is this model any different from wordpress.org/.com?
Relying on "free" services where the provider has no contractual obligations is the very basis of the problem with Google shitcanning Reader without giving users the *choice* to move to a paid model or, heaven forbid, open sourcing the code. Oh right, Google's core platform code is proprietary, my bad for thinking that they could eat their own dogfood and at least provide the *option* for users to re-deploy Google products (or their open-sourced anaogues) on Google's own AppEngine platform.

The mere existence of code [in Skype's codebase] that sends messages without the user's input is troublesome (although hardly surprising, considering the source).
Indeed there are no easy solutions, but there's plenty of mathematical work going on to better handle uncertainty. For example, OpenCog's Probabilistic Logic Networks.

If Google wishes to put sensible conditions on Android distributors they can do so. Why they haven't done this is anyone's best guess.

You are confused. Copyleft is about freedom for USERS at the expense of checking DEVELOPERS abilities to infringe on the freedoms of users. Developers who use to copyleft licenses are generous in their grant of freedoms to users, while developers who do not use copyleft licenses are less generous to varying degrees (depending on the license chosen). Note that 'generous' is used here in the abstract sense, not in any concrete moralistic sense.
I'd like Google Scholar to offer services for hosting and review of scientific papers. Perhaps then we'd see some truer-to-life cost figures possible with state-of-the-art technology. It would also be interesting if Google disclosed advertising revenue for this tiny fraction of their business.
Better yet, Novell should assign the UNIX copyrights to the Free Software Foundation or the Linux Foundation. Perhaps then they could begin to earn back the trust of the FOSS community.

This also does not prevent another company like Impi Linux (65% owned by Mark Shuttleworth) from offering optional services on top of Ubuntu.
Impi has a deal with CodeWeavers (the commercial contributors to WINE) and other commercial Linux players; I'd be surprised if they're not also talking to Linspire.
It's an interesting dance between the FREE and commercial software worlds!
Which would be perfect in my case... A new fast/quiet Mac Mini Core based Linux firewall at home, and the ability to run OS X in VMWare on my laptop, as I would benefit from doing sysadmin and application testing on-the-go, without lugging two laptops!
Perhaps Google is quietly gaining experience with desktop Linux (Ubuntu) and WINE for a future assault on the Microsoft-dominated desktop.
Microsoft will try very hard to switch people away from win32 apps and onto WinFX apps, where they have much tighter control (patents, DRM, etc.). Also, Microsoft knows that win32 will soon be 99%+ reverse engineered to run on Linux, so they have a huge interest in killing win32.
Circa 1999 Intel wanted to kill x86 to increase profit margins and gain a tighter control of the market via IA-64 (Itanium), a highly IP-encumbered ISA. In the process, Intel left an x86-64 gap.
If Microsoft leaves a win32 gap, like Intel did with x86-64, perhaps Google will fill that gap with Linux/win32, just as AMD filled Intel's gap with AMD64, leaving Intel scrambling and Itanium stagnating.
I would guess that Microsoft will do better with WinFX than Intel is doing with Itanium, but how much better is the interesting question!
