Yeah! I mean, who does this guy think he is! Six whole pages is way, way too much. In fact, I can't be bothered to read anything more than one page. In fact, I didn't even bother to read your whole post. You know, I don't think I'll even bother to read THIS post. Oh, Simpsons is on, gotta run.

  2. Bungie is just a name on Bungie Software Bought By Microsoft · · Score: 1

One thing I haven't seen in all this discussion of Bungie's future is any mention of Bungie's developers. Where are _they_ going? Video games do not prominently display development credits as a rule, yet the people who develop the games are far more important to the final outcome than the name of the company. What is going to happen to the talent behind Oni, Halo, Myth and Marathon? IMHO, that's the really hot "property" here, not the Bungie name.

Wow, it's great to see one of the masters (and pioneers!) of web-satire return. I used to check out Mirsky's Worst of the Web every day. In fact, I think Slashdot owes a little something to Mirsky. Not only did thousands of web designers learn how NOT to build a site by reading Mirsky, but he was there in the early days of content-gathering websites. Three cheers!

Oh yeah, and I still think porn is bad.

  5. what I read what I don't on Would You Ever Read A Newspaper Again? · · Score: 1

DO: two local weeekly papers. The Seattle Weekly has great writing and good articles on technology and technology culture. There's a local slant, but not so local that the writing is lousy. The Seattle Stranger doesn't have the quality, but does occasionally break and important local story. The also print fiction from time to time (imagine a person wanting to read fiction). I also read Scentific American, The Economist and Adbusters magazines in order to keep up on what's going on in parts of the world I don't touch as often. Don't: Two local dailies. The content is lousy and they have little diversity. More articles on "The Hacker Threat" and the addiction-of-the-week (will it be coffee? sex? URLs?). Here's a tip to the dailies: get someone intelligent, maybe even a non-journalist, to write a feature on their field in your Sunday edition and I will buy it.

  6. Microsoft recants open source offer on Will Microsoft Open Windows Source Code? (No!) · · Score: 5

It turns out that MS is NOT offering to open source Windows. I got this from MSN Investor, a site that requires a login, so I'm posting the relevant part of the artcile here:

Microsoft denies Gates offered to open Windows code
    February 17, 2000 08:38 PM
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp.MSFT on Thursday strongly denied that Chairman Bill Gates had told Bloomberg Television in an interview that he would be willing to open the Windows operating system source code to competitors to settle an antitrust suit with the U.S. Justice Department.

"Bill did not make any of the comments attributed to him about the settlement," Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said. "The comments they said Bill made are just not true."

About three weeks ago, my ISP here in Seattle (oz.net) was brought down by a massive SMURF attack. I wonder if this is related? Has someone built some new toys out there?
On the other hand, about two weeks ago Yahoo's home page was redirecting to some random Geocities home page for about an hour. I was surprised this one didn't make the news, but I know a few people who saw it.

Is it possible that this release, coming almost out of the blue as it seems, is an attempt to capitalize on a possible Lord of The Rings feeding frenzy? LOTR is shaping up to be a very strongly anticipated release. Maybe the studios are sniffing a fantasy feeding frenzy? D&D could be the "Buck Rogers" movie of the 2000's. :)
BTW, LOTR movie info can be found at www.theonering.net.

  10. Re:Another death toll for the internet? on AOL and Time Warner Confirm Merger Plans · · Score: 1

Here we go again... Everytime some mega-corp that has some business on the internet merges with some other mega-corp that has some business on the internet everyone has a coniption fit about how the internet is being too commercialized and how big brother is going to ram it's content down every joe person's throat. Well duh, of course they are.

All due respect, but there is no "of course" in the evolution of net access. Companies like AOL and TW make deals like this precisely because the future is not a forgone conclusion. They are struggling to make history because if they don't, Microsoft or Apple or or someone we haven't heard of yet will. Part of this struggle is guessing what kind of access you will accept and possibly pay money for. If they are wrong, you will go elsewhere. This is why AOL can afford to make a deal like this, because they got customers to pay for access.

It's true that we can't stop people from using AOL, or stop AOL from offering their mediocre service, but we can still fight for meaningful content. Slashdot's success is (IMHO) proof of this. It might even be a good thing if we threw the occasional "Coniption fit".

It seems to me that people are prone to the sentiment that "if people are willing to pay for it, you can't argue against it". This is not so. We can and should argue about things that concern us.

Those who do not seek content will have content imposed upon them.

I this move really going to give us a body of expert computer scientists to draw upon, or simply bolster the mass of dba's and mediocre MCSE's? In my experience the best computer people have been those driven by curiosity and a love of learning. I did my BA and most of a PhD in Philosophy, I work with two former music majors and a writer. While somewhat usefule, I think throwing money at the supposed problem will produce limited results. I think it's laudable for Clinton's administration to put more money into education, though I personally would like to see it across the board, not just computer science.
