I think the Google OS would be more like an "Hipervisor" and WebTop mix, You don't need to launch a browser the OS is the browser.
Would be nice to have a Linux desktop with a full set of features thats light on resources as it seem to be a thin client for cloud hosted apps and not so much into native apps. Adobe AIR / FLEX would be nice (inb4 Flash is teh sucks), maybe Google can push Adobe to release some CS apps ready for Linux or at least WINE optimized, THAT would be so fkskng AWESOME.
As the yesterday's article here noted, Google is doing a complete GUI from scratch, so, do it light Google, my Thinkpad A21 would be happy as many many old PC's. Yes, I know there are alternatives for Lite-Linux-Distros but the thin client is what I'm really looking for here.

Well Running almost the same config as the GP (Win XP x86 + Ubuntu 9.04 x86 + Win 7 x64) I can say that win 7 is faster than Xp but not as much a Ubuntu in part because Win 7 is optimized for Multicore and, well, using more than 4Gb of RAM. Ubuntu may be faster but it has been a LOYAL PITA to set up the nVidia driver to work reliable on an embedded GeForce 8200 (even installing the latest from nVidia drivers site) It's not fault from the Ubuntu guys it's nVidia's fault but still I can't use my Ubuntu OS as long as I want, next time I'll choose ATI looks good in the future.
After installing Win 7, Windows Update found all the drivers needed and installed them so after the first reboot I had a very fast and stable OS. It's easy to set up, easy to admin, have a nice resource monitor and looks rather nice (looks matter for us the design guys who have to show our desktops to our clients, the same as Compiz had helped me to "sell" some Ubuntu installs). Even using and embedded and kinda old GPU lets me use Aero, which is by the looks more responsive and customizable than the Default XP GUI. Not every thing is joy, the usage of RAM in idle it's 900 Mb, It does not play nice with my AV, Nod32, keeps asking me to install one. I don't trust MS because it's too soon to know if Win 7 ends up being a trap with this massive RIAA lobbying (?).
For the guys like me that have to use some kind of windows, 7 it's worth the upgrade, but if you can make Linux to work flawless on your PC and do not need Win only Software running at full performance you should go Linux NOW! Best tool for the job isn't it?
You leave your computer on, in the workplace, for 3 days, and you are waiting to find it as You leave it? Oooook. Maybe the pages were auto updating so cache was being made, maybe they have rotating Ads, Maybe it signed up to a Botnet by itself. I have just 2 GB or RAM @ 800 MHz and a Ge-Force 8200 chipset, no dedicated video card, simple SATA I disk: not an ubber rig in any way. While running primes I started a VM with Win XP and another With Xubuntu, Fired up some OVA in h264, I was recording everything with Camtasia Studio. Guess what? The PC was still usable, some lag here and there but hey! It cost me less than 400 USD. My point: Do a (power) user really needs/can to do all those things at the same time? I mean seeing a movie, testing websites in VM's, recording tutorials and testing primes?
And I can just UPGRADE if I spend 150 USD for a Phenom II 720BE and 30 USD in 2 GB of RAM, That was my upgrade plan but after this news I think I'm going first for a new AMD Mobo, maybe I'm over sensitive or something but day to day nVidia sounds more like Intel sounds more like Microsoft.

I tough my install was wrong when everything was working (video, power management, basic sound etc) and downloading drivers for an old Audigy SE (after the Creative Vista drivers mess). It's just so weird to see a Windows that delivers. May sound ironic but believe me, I distrust when everything is so easy and automated, I don't like to feel just like an spectator.
Because before reinstalling win XP we can't make a back up with previously downloaded drivers and SP's, or a back up of the actual (running) drivers done with some third party software. Because we cant make another partition or external disk were we put all those installers and SP's so we just fire them just after the OOBE. Because we simply can't make a clean reinstall image so reinstalling takes 10 minutes. Because we simply can't isn't it?
Am I doing it wrong? Because I just spend 2 to 3 hours to get my machine A OK. I'm so sorry maybe it's because I come from the advertising industry so I can't do it any better : (
