If you can freeze to death in a car that's stopped for approximately one minute, you are either a) living in antarctica, or b) engaging in some serious hyperbole. Having spent more than 60% of my life in place where cold winters are really freaking cold (Edmonton, Alberta) I know that sitting inside a car for a minute is not going to lead to death. Having spent another 10 years or so where summers can be particularly uncomfortable (Seoul, South Korea) I know that while heat can be uncomfortable, I also know that not infant is going to die of heat stroke in a minute or two in a stopped car. If your heater and/or air conditioning isn't working, then get it serviced. A minute or two without either will not be fatal.
If in this situation, your car stops and doesn't restart, get out, use the cell phone and find somewhere sheltered form the elements while you wait. You will almost certainly be somewhere where shelter is to be found, as traffic lights generally indicate some form of development, usually a medium sized town at the least.
Having said that though, I don't think this is a particularly good idea, as anything reduces the driver's control over the vehicle is usually not a good thing.
Only a distraction if you let it be. Returning to school this year, I use my notebook to take notes in all my classes except econ, because graphing is not much fun in TextEdit. The notebook is pretty valuable, although I suspect it would be of less use in a science/maths lecture. Easy text formatting for highlighting different pieces of information within the structure of the notes, useful for looking up relevant information, and of course I can type faster than I can write, so while putting down the important bits of what the professor is saying, I can also easily inject my own thoughts/comments on the subject as they come to me.
Do lots of kids use facebook and shit during class, of course they do, they're on mommy and daddy's dime, why wouldn't they fuck around? Not all do though. I'm sure there's correlation between grades and facebook use in class, and once could certainly theorise causation....
If they want to go on believing that the earth was created six thousand years ago, and that wearing magic underwear will bring them closer to the Great Space Ghost, I say: absolutely fine with me. Go right ahead, and let freedom ring.
Excuse me, I'm uhh sorry to bother you...but...could you tell me where I could get some of that magic underwear? I'd like to let some freedom ring.
>> Do you know how many Junior's we see that apply who have very questionable photos on their FaceBook pages that get pulled up by a simple Google search?
Were they showing anything illegal? Can it be proven by looking at those pictures that the person was not capable of doing the work you wanted to hire him for? Somebody's ability of performing a particular task has nothing to do with his inability to align to all the groupthinks.
the iPad is a backward tool with the OS of a mobile phone, which doesn't support multi-tasking... some of them even have basic features. like an OS where I can read an ebook in a foreign language and switch to my online dictionary for a translation for example...
This is the thing I never understood as a complaint about the iPad. On a screen the size of the iPad, how many applications are you likely to have viewable at the same time. if you're switching between apps you're probably hitting alt-tab to get to the application you want right? Well on the iPad you have to hit the home button then select the app. I know that one whole extra step is quite a chore...
Having said that, I will not be rushing out and buying one, I'll probably wait until Christmas. Or just after. See when the next rev comes out, and take advantage of my education discount.:)

SCOTUS has never reached the decision that corporations are "deserving" of human rights. A passing remark included by a court reporter in the case of Santa Clara County vs Southern Railroad is usually the basis for that belief. It is, frankly speaking, one of the most harmful beliefs in modern law.
It's just amazing to me that a female lawyer would choose Thomas "women are subservient" Aquinas over Thomas Jefferson. If the thought processes of Aquinas had continued to remain dominant, she would have never had the chance to become a lawyer.
surely a real programmer would lovingly handcraft each bit onto the microprocessor? failing that I would be interested in seeing this represented through LOGO.
-Typing on a hard solid surface for any length of time is painful. The iphone is great for texts and brief posts. Would I want to type something as verbose as this post? Hell no. -There is no comfy way to hold them. "ok I'll rest it on my legs... I can't see the screen clearly", "I'll hold it with one hand... This makes typing slow and my arm and wrist are starting to ache from holding something with a high center of gravity", "I'll use a stand and use it on a desk... Why don't I just use a PC or laptop?".
I take notes on lectures/presentations at school on my iPod touch with no discomfort at all. how the hell are you typing that you're in pain after using a touch screen for typing? This will be a hit with students, especially with Apple's educational discount and marketing.
you do understand the difference between a laissez faire free market economy and a market economy don't you? This is basic Korean history post-Korean war. Park Jung-Hee nationalised the banks and directed capital flows to the companies he thought had the best chances of producing products for export in a competitive manner. North Korea has no export led industry, and no market economy at all (actually that's not entirely true, there is a very very very small internal market experiment being conducted, but it is only at farmer's market level).
This is not about "culture" but about the rights of mankind. It's not that they have to go to school, it's that they have a choice. How about you ask your wife if she would have preferred the chance at education over working at crappy jobs? We have the advantage in the "developed" world of not forcing our kids to work 12 hours a day in manual labour positions. We arrived at this advantage in part through exploitation of workers in other countries. Do you not think we have a moral obligation to try and correct this situation?
Except South Korea doesn't have a history of using child labor. What they did do is work extremely hard to build a strong export-led industry combined with high import duties that ensured domestic production would remain high. Oh and most of those industries were given state funding (as the banks were all nationalized), and were not grown in a laissez faire free market economy. Prior to Japanese colonization, Korea would have used children to help in the farms (much like on American farms), but not in factories, because they were primarliy an agrarian society.
I'm just curious where you got your prices from , cause the apple store's cheapest iMac goes for 1,200. That's 3GHz processor with 4GB RAM and a (pretty damn good) 21" monitor. Plus the OS. Where did you get your $300 machine from that has 4GB of RAM, a good 21" monitor and the latest OS from Microsoft?
It's a real shame that this gets modded troll. Some people can't handle facts.

It's a good start, but you need to go further. People who have sex with the intention of making children should be re-educated. they're clearly sick.

Unfortunately, parent speaks the truth here. We need to wean our government off the corporate cock.

Youtube has a matter replicator in my house now?
Forget YouTube, when does PornoTube install the matter replicator? I'll take mine en suite.

You mean sosumi...
which is absolutely retarded for digital books.
new format, same old crusty paradigm.
So do I. I never use library for several reasons:
-Last time I checked the 3 libraries close to me, they had less than 30% of the book I have at home.
Wow, how many books do you have at home?
He's probably confused the verb "to dredge" with the noun "dregs". Give the chap a break, he's only a writer after all, not an editor. ;)
you hear me slashdot editors? *shakes fist in rage* we expect perfection from editors. (I know, I know, I must be new here.)
Hooray! the second person in two days with a clue on /.
There is some hope after all...and it's not Obi-Wan

Wow, someone with a modicum of common sense who manages not to see the problem in absolute terms. A rare breed here on /.
The free market may not lead to perfection, but it avoids wanton corruption if not crippled by inept governments.
How would we know? This condition has never existed at any time in any place in human history.
link please? The cheapest one I can find on there goes for 399 without monitor and 3GB RAM.
