I'm not saying that we are any better in how we conduct ourselves internationally than countries we've considered to be the "bad guys" in the not so distant past. However, when you do look back, historically, we are following the same path as Rome, Babylon, Persia, et al. We're allowing the foundation of ideals our country was founded upon, to be circumvented by an international consensus of what the correct and moral ways to do things is. We've allowed the integrity of our morality be usurped by the modern invention of Politcal Correctness. And I fail to see how anyone can debate the moral, economic, politcal, diplomatic, and cultural slide our once great nation has taken because we've allowed our National policies to be dictated by far right AND left wing idiots who would rather hamstring their nation, than be seen as fear mongering, or war mongering, or "hate" mongering.
And don't get me started on "innocent combatants", read the Geneva Conventions sometime and see how they define an enemy combatant. We worry so much about collateral damage in modern warfare that people fail to see that the people fighting us currently hide like cowards in civilian neighborhoods and wearing civilian clothing, how should we be expected to combat "fairly" these men that people are trying to define as "partisans" or "guerilla" fighters. I'd like to see any of you people who talk crap about our troops, or our military policy in Iraq, walk down an alleyway, tired/hungry/thirsty/scared/lonely/homesick etc. and be shot at by people that look no different than the man you say 3 clicks back who gave you directions to this neighborhood, and who wanted you to root out the insurgents so he could sleep at night not worrying about being murdered because he made the unfortunate mistake of being Sunni in a Shite region. You try being that soldier, and not knowing the language, or being able to interpret who in fact is your enemy, and then ask yourself if you wouldn't find yourself gripping for your life to the Army R.O.E and hoping that the new field manual will allow you to define and defend yourself with, a meaning on who is trying to kill you.
Ask yourself if being on the 20th floor of the Trade Center on 9/11 made it somehow OK for us to not set an example that terrorism targeted at American Soil will not be tolerated. Who are we to have the audacity to crucify our troops for fighting, or our leaders for planning and takig action, against a group of people that took 3 planes worth of hostages and crashed them into the symbolic hearts of our Nation. Who are we to look at THOSE innocent citizens of America, and say, well because someone not responsible may get hurt, we won't seek justice for your tragic end.
Wow, I meandered around that topic enough
Basically all I mean is I am proud of being an American, and I do agree that some of things we;ve perpetuated are not proper, or "ok", and I don't think we should emulate our enemies in the slightest, but to say that we shouldn't do anything would be like begging for Pearl Harbor to happen all over again. Isolationism obviously doesn't work, because when we attempt to step out of world politics, someone always attempts to pull us back in by foolishly attacking our country. I think we should breathe a sigh of releif that we didn't invade Iran and Syria while we were at it.
You don't find it a tad counfusing that people, (you included) have some sort of problem with turning over a notorious dictator to his own countrymen who he had been politically molesting for years? Why are people sooooo concerned with the rights of people who would not extend us that same concern? I'm not ignorant enough (like some of my fellow countrymen) to beleive that all people in Iraq hate us, or think we're infidels, but I'm pretty sure Sadam promoted a train of thought about Western Civilization that would have led to a LOT worse treatment by him if they had caught one of our political leaders. Or has everyone soooo quickly forgot the poor journalists that were caught, and summarily be-headed on the internet? It is NOT wrong to make someone face justice from his own people if he wronged them. And I don't see anyone screaming objections about what happened to Mussolini, which is the same thing, an ignorant dictator who was executed by his former subjects.
People need to get their head out of the behinds sometime soon and realize that in a modern world, Westernized morality, though "right" in our minds, is not an opinion that is shared by our "enemies" Regan was probably the last President who had the courage to stand up to what he thought was wrong in a nation and declare the USSR an "evil empire". Who would dare now?
I'm beginning to find it enormously frustraing that people, regardless of the topic, continue to piss and moan about problems that there is no realistic solution to. Whaa, the economy is bad, but people are too PC to put a significant Import tariff in effect, to balance out the "cost savings" of shipping our industries overseas. People complain about gun violence, but don't allow DC to ban handguns in the city (since there is SOOO much hunting on the Mall).
This is the same scenario. You can't create a secure environment for networking computers because you need to have a set series of standards so that they can all communicate. You also can't put the genie back in the bottle, and take the prevalence away from Internet usage. So what are you left with? A set of systems that are easily exploited because they are all set to comprehend a common set of instructions.
Why don't we quit the whining, and do away with this assinine concept of security, and understand that sandboxing, and ONLY sandboxing, will ensure the integrity of your valuable system's information and applications. That's it, so instead of worrying about being "secure" why not make it so nothing that can be gained from being exploited is worth the hassle?
But honestly, I think this kind of enterprise would lead to websites being even LESS valuable, since people wouldn't even have to worry about owning/occupying certain sites, since people can seek out their own individualized TLD and have it be more "marketable" to the product offering they are promoting.
Regardless of this person's vanity whoring, he's right. Any Input based medium can only contain/compute computations that are at one point input by a "user". The only benefit a computer has is parallel processing and the ability to more QUICKLY render sumations. Thus a computer is and will always be at a level where it can not create, only calculate. I'd say you define intelligence or creativity differently than most.
would be more newsworthy, Especially considering that this experiment will either A. Destroy the world, B. prove the Higgs Boson and other crazy particulate theory, C. prove(disprove) the existence of....GOD D. all of the above
Who cares about the IT angle when I could walk away from this experiment saying "See, I TOLD YOU, God doesn't exist, the Higgs Boson is your new God"..........and then create a new religion and be rich, RICH I TELLS YA!
even as a sole prop. In order to be considered a "business entity" you have to file with someone. Any entity that "pays" any employee needs to at least have a Federal ID (EIN#) issued to them.
It be like if I claimed "S7urm LLC." and tried to write off the time I spend on here as a "business expense"...probably wouldn't work since my "company" doesn't make "profit" from "this enterprise":)
Why should people be able to bring CRIMINAL action against a person/entity, when the people (DA, U.S DAs et al) who are responsible and have the legally granted right to bring such actions won't handle the case. You're talking about creating a prosecution from a standing of un-enforcerability. A municipality/city/state/country/tribe has the "power" to create, alter, negotiate, and finalize sentencing aggrements, plea bargains, settlements, etc. whereas a "civilian" prosecutor in a criminal case cannot and SHOULD not be able to make those decisions because they aren't accountable to the constituency of that (state, city, country etc.)
Thus we only allow prosecution to be carried out by empowered individuals in a civic capacity in a criminal court. We delegate non-criminal cases to the Civil courts, because monetary/property gain is the only outcome, as it should be. I'd rather not have some crazy prosecutor, held unaccountable, trying me in a court where I could be put to death.
that we can't figure out a more relevant form of voting to appeal to a larger contingent of the American populace, maybe more people, more easily accessing voting methods, would allow for a more viable collaboration of opinion in regards to the election of our National officials. But I digress, the super delegate and the Electoral College make my point m00t.
Not just to file fraudulant DMCA notices, but also to do so in the name of a Business that doesn't exist? I'd think someone, somewhere would want to take this opportunity to finally push back and sue for false allegations filed by a fradulant company in the name of an entity that was not part of the original notice. Might make a statement, (especially from YouTube) that we won't simply allow people to negligently file take down notices on material they don't even own the copyright to.
Umm....they did that already, as mentioned above. It's called the Patriot Act. Ya know, the law that's kinda like modern day witch hunts, but "accepted" by EVERYBODY by law.
If the expansion of the HD disc markets ever reach into the music industry, will Musicians be expected to write 100+ songs to consider it viable to produce an Album on, say, Blu-Ray?
Lyrics are part of music, and since music is broadcasted without "charging" for you to hear it (radio) than why in the world would ANYONE want to block someone from Displaying what they heard for free in a lyrical context. I thought the whole point of music was so you could hear it, not so we could prevent someone from reading it. While I can understand that some musicians would not want their lyrics misrepresented or displayed in a manor that takes away from the lyric's effect, I can't comprehend telling someone they can't display it as text. If a band wants to prevent misrepresentation (which is the ONLY reason I could see anyone getting upset) they should post their damn lyrics.
Whats next? preventing other interested musicians from creating tablature? Why don't we just halt creativity all together. I know that I have very strong influences on my creative works and I would hate to not be able to call upon them because a record label didn't want me to know WTF they were saying.
Like any other emerging technology (especially in relation to "high-speed" networking) the initial costs of implementation are always going to be high in comparison to an established media that was rooted into the industry. Any cost for any tech, once industrialized sees immediate turns to meet competetor's pricing. Simple economic thinking would lead one to deduce that while new anything is expenisive, give it time to establish and build a foundation in it's niche, and you'll see price wars.
Remember when having a cell phone was for yuppies and corporate geeks? (my frickin cheapskate dad has one now)
though I must agree that mesh networks underperform in speed, once they finally institute the ideal of swarming technology, not only will the speed be picked up but you'll also see a drastic increase in potential lost/corrupt packets. the real profit from mesh networking (at least as I see it) is the ability to cut cycles in processes in a networked environment. Once we find that technology like torrents is an easy, fast, and very decentralized way to store and transfer data, mesh networking and hardware techs of that vein will become a very prominent and profitable venture for any large node count business setting
why would you want your SSL statements to be made available online? I wouldn't want to tag SSL directories to ANYTHING related to an IP, bad security/mojo
I think the real group to blame in situations like this is management. Supervisors and middle management love to be able to keep tabs on their employees so they like to have them grouped together (physically or virtually) so that they can keep an over-head on what is being produced and in what (timely) manner. If management could develop a means of sorting out the social from the introverted then they would have a truly cohesive workforce. I personnaly beleive think-tank work practice is the best because of a tendency for creative criticsm and a more reliable means of levying out ideas that aren't feasable. However, a lot of your loner types have a tendency to put out qualtiy work simply because they AREN'T there to socialize. They have a goal, they have 12 hours to reach it and that is what they do.
If management could simply grasp the concept that their employees are individuals, they could mold the workplace to suit everyone so that issues like this wouldn't occur. If you like working at home, work at home, you work better in a group then so be it, and if your that "hermit" who works best alone though wants the interaction of at least BEING there then that could work as well.
When I was in Special Projects for a while I saw all these situations occur. I had employees come to me complaining that they didn't feel productive at home, that they needed the interaction of fellow employees (at least available) to have criticsm readily available. I also noticed that we in management didn't meet those needs. As a result people felt less cared for and lost affinity with their employer. Once we instituted a means for personal preference to become a factor in our employment and dispersal capacities, we notice a significant increase in productivity.
Just take into effect the blow on e-commerce a major MS security issue would have. I work for a large retail company that relies on e-commerce for at least 45% of their annual income, that turns into millions of dollars a year dependant (unfortunetly) solely on Microsoft products. That's ONE company. If I were said hacker, who exploited Microsoft to it's Highest security level, I would definetly go after any form of automatic updating and virus code definitions. Make every Microsoft user that EVER connects to the internet automatically update a virus I planted in the Microsoft system and watch the world's ECONOMY die. This whitepaper has the potential of a great work of fiction for some tech savy novelist to implement. The world could feel a tremendous tremor by MS being exploited to that level, and with the loss of a large portion of e-commerce you would lose a large portion of economical stability due to a major dependency on the internet as a viable business solution to reach long distance clients/customers
The end is nigh my friends, as goes Microsoft so goes the world. Maybe the NSA and Homeland Security Departments should aid Microsoft in it's efforts to securify their networks. We all know the NSA has some of the best technical minds in the world and it sure as hell is a National Security issue if all of our economy dies in one fell swoop.
