  1. You don't have to wait for a patch. Kernels 4.14.11 and 4.15-rc6 already contain the fix.

    That's not a fix, that's a work-around. The only fix is to get hardware that works correctly. For that you have to contact Intel and their distributors directly, and don't give up until you get what you paid for.

  3. 99% sure you know nothing about patents and have no experience with them.

    I have a few patents. My experiece is the first time you apply for one it always gets rejected. Then you give your patent attorney a boatload of money and a few years later the exact same this gets awarded a patent.

    I worked at a place that developed a product and their patent attorney said it wasn't patentable for reasons X, Y, and Z. I don't want to go into it here. Our largest competitor copied the product and patented it, then sued us for patent infringement. That was a real kick in the nuts. Also that patent attorney was a fucking moron.

    Walmart has the reputation for having the lowest prices. I can go to Walmart and compare the price to the supermarket literally next door and Walmart often has the lower price.

    For something like ass wipes that you use once and flush down the toilet why would you pay the higher price?

    We're no where near going broke. If that were true, then the recent vote to reduce taxes would be a highly irresposible thing to do.

    What the GOP objects to is any program that benefits the poor, disabled, minorities, and the elderly. Welfare for poor people is bad. Welfare for corporations is terrific.

    There is plenty of money to go around, but the hypocritical GOP pieces of shit in Congress want all of it going to the rich. Let's not pretend otherwise.

    Computers you can recycle for free. Air conditioners, refrigerators, TVs and old CRT computer monitors you have to pay to get rid of. Which explains why they suddely appear in the middle of the woods, unused creeks, Salvation Army dumpsters and whatever that unknown area is called behind Walmart.

    Folks, Haven't you figured this out. The President is going to have a Mexican company build the wall, and then stiff them. Then they will have paid for it. It is how he operates.

    He'd have to find someone dumb enough to fall for that first. Among the murderers and rapists and some, I assume, are good people. But they aren't as stupid as Trump.

    If the device can access the Internet, it can play youtube. Apparently, the Fire is some kind of walled-garden already, so negotiations about what are in or out actually make sense.

    It' s very much a walled garden, with music, video, and apps pointing to Amazon Prime services and shopping for products at Amazon is very easy. You can't install apps from the Google Play store on the Fire (unless you root the device, apparently). However, there is a YouTube app available from the Amazon apps store.

    If you want to disable SELinux then disable SELinux, but not writing "bad code" isn't an option when even OpenSSL get major holes.

    This reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon where the picture was of two winos laying in a garbage-strewn alley and one turns to the other and slurs "...and that's when I realized failure is an option."

    In true New Yorker fashion, it's "funny" because it's true.

  15. Back in the mid-1980's, there was a Twilight Zone reboot that was actually quite good. Better than the original to my mind. It lasted two years, as is typical for intelligent shows. There was another edition in the early 2000's that was cheap horror and lasted only a couple of years because it was just lame.

    Intelligent shows last two years and lame cheap horror shows last only a couple years. Got it.

    Credit cards are not so easy for stupid people to acquire.

    I got a Discover card with a $500 credit limit when I was 17. I used it to fly down to Virginia Beach and partied my ass off until it capped. Then they Discovered that I couldn't pay them back. You see, I just got out of high school. I never had a job.

    I've heard rumors that people have gotten credit card offers in their pets names. I don't know if it's true or not, but I wouldn't doubt it.

    My understanding is that you file suit against a minor he is appointed a "legal guardian" (usually a state attorney to assume responsibility for the lawsuit) by the court. I think the mother may have financial responsibility but not legal responsibility for the actions of her children. IANAL, though.

    You mean in the vicinity of an Alexa. Because you know that thing is in "listen" mode all the time right ?

    On the Fire tablet, Alexa has to be enabled in settings, and then you have to manually start the app to get it to "listen". It's hard to do inadvertently.

    I realize there are devices available that work differently, but I have no experience with or interest in them.

    I agree with the statement that privacy is not about hiding nefarious things. My point was that I don't care if Amazon or Ukranian hackers know that I asked what the weather was going to be tomorrow or that I set a timer for a soft-boiled egg. In fact I've just publically posted this information to the entire world, including hackers. Do with it what you will.

    This is why everyone needs a healthcare proxy, a legal document appointing another person to make medical decisions for you in the case you are incapacitated and can't make your wishes known yourself.

    Maybe a better option for this guy would be to tattoo the phone number of his proxy on his chest.

    I agree, next time skip the Slim Jim, it's a step too far.

    With the advent of unlimited cellular plans, there really isn't any logical excuse for telephone companies to keep personally identifiable records of really anything at this point.

    I called T-Mobile once about getting my phone records for a court case. They told me they don't keep any records for the prepaid plans. Dunno if it's true, but my lawyer couldn't get them either. Presumably they don't keep them but if they do they're hard to get.

    If you are discussing your top secret plans with Alexa you're doing it wrong.

    I've been playing with Alexa (the app) for a couple of days and I'm genuinely impressed with the voice recognition capability. Due to lung disease, I have trouble communicating with actual humans over the phone, yet most of what I manage to croak out is recognized by Alexa.

    I remember 20 years ago evaluating voice recognition software where you had to train it to your voice, enunciate very slowly and clearly, and it still didn't work very well.

    Noscript has been available for Firefox 57 for a few days now. Not sure about Lastpass.

    Yes, I know it. It crashes a lot. Try clicking around using the options page for a while and you'll see what I mean. Lastpass is available too, but my users have to log in every time they restart the browser because that is broken too.

    You can turn off updates to extensions. That you didn't figure that out after the first few times suggests something else might have been the problem.

    The so-called "legacy" extensions aren't compatible with this version of Firefox. Specifically, NoScript and Lastpass are currently broken and using the old versions isn't an option. You can blame the user all you want but seems to me you're the dipshit who doesn't get it here.

    The power went out for a week in my area a few years back during a winter storm. I could only find one store open, a convenience store, where the guy was entering transactions in a notebook. I bought some very expensive D cell batteries (with cash) that day.

    After sticking it out for a day I had to leave my home because I (normally) have electric heat. Luckily I had enough gas in my car. I'd be shit out of luck if I didn't because no gas stations were open. All the pumps now depend on electricity to operate.

    So this isn't hypothetical, I know I can only last about a day without electricity.
