It seems that everybody is speaking of BeOS in past tense. Yes Be the company is gone, but here is a group that is combining one of the best pieces of open source software and at the same time fixing the two biggest bugs, x, and lack of consistency. Any product that does this will have a place on my desktop. Stop bitching and support these people.
It runs under vmware, however the PCNET network card isn't supported yet. There is a HOWTO on the subject, as it takes a trick or two to get it to work under vmware. Drivers for Nvidia and 3dfx cards are being worked on, but it runs under vmware with the vesa 2.0 driver.
But it is of Atheos 3.2 which is quite out of date. Once the slashdot effect goes away, I am going to try and make a vmware package for 3.5. It should be noted that there is no PCNET driver. so networking in vmware doesnt work (yet).
There is a guy working on the ide driver with the end goal being cd-rom support. NE2000 and RTL139 network cards work out of the box, and there is a 3com driver available. Nvidia, Matrox, and 3dfx cards either have drivers, or are very close to having drivers. Almost all recent video cards will work with the vesa 2.0 mode driver. Kurt is doing a great job with the core os, and he has left the driver development to the people who want it most. In my experience he has been very responsive to any requests for help in coding.
Im a sophomore, I fixed the website, didnt realize it didn't work, and that is just my nice pretty website. I dont like to have a resume that I give to companies referenced to a site that contains the material of my main site. Thanks for the constructive criticism, I went back and gave you some karma:)
I acquired a pair of series IV 901's and I love them for music. Really fill the room. As a general speaker, however, they do not work well in a surround sound setup due to the wave propagation. They also need a large amp and the perfect shape room to sound right. For anybody who can't remember, these speakers were / are sort of a pentagon shape with 8 drivers, all the same size pointing out the 2 back sides, and one driver pointing out the front.
I have been using a four lane IR timer and score board. You can get them from Train Express in Indianapolis, ask for Mike, www.trainexpress.com. It comes with no instructions, but their is a serial port on the back of the score board for this. No idea how to program for it, but shouldnt be too hard to figure out. As for club racing, it is a great timer. Can do either a time or lap limit. 2 beeps start the race. Each single beep means a faster lap, a long beep stops the race. I believe a 6 and 8 lane version are made as well. I use the 4. The digital display is nice, and it is quite accurate.
I do not know of a commercially available PC that has a Unified Memory Architecture. That's right, the video ram and system ram are the same thing on X-Box (200 Mhz DDR is the number that sticks in my mind). This effectively removes much of the bottleneck between the cpu and the gpu. Your favorite PC will also require many more layers of software for the same gameplay as the X-Box. The end result is that the X-Box goes faster on cheaper components.
I went to one high school dance, it sucked, so everyyear for prom about 10-15 of us threw a lan party. We had a lot more fun, saved some money, and diddn't have to put up with all the high school bull shit.
I go to a large institution, look at the email address, and this sentiment seems to be prevalent. College students these days have very few rights. Our rooms can be searched with no warning, we are forced to sign a computing center policy that gives up all rights, and if we dont fit into the khaki and white shirt stereotype, we are considered differant. And this is at a top 10 engineering school. I can't even imagine a liberal arts school.
The Xbox will use a unified memory architecture, giving it much better memory bandwidth. By having system memory and video memory be the same, much less caching and swapping. Another thing, by using a set of standard hardware, many layers of software are taken out. Yes it uses PC hardware, no it is not a PC.
As a student of Purdue, I would like to say that they are doing the right thing. No service has been banned, carnivore has not been installed, and students are left responsible for their personal actions. I know of 3 cases recently where students have broken computer laws, been caught, and been responsible for their actions. The university's only involvement was that by breaking the laws, they voided their housing contract, and were evicted. I do not feel sorry, because they signed a contract, and then broke it. This is how the system is supposed to work.

Who is John Galt?
The United States is attempting to stop terrorism.
Mplayer will play all of those formats.

This is some of the funniest stuff I have seen on /. for a long time
Im running an Asus P2B-D, also BX, with SB-Live and have no problems in Linux or windows, with 2.2 or 2.4 kernel.

I had my Voodoo3 2 months before the TNT2 came out. Thats why I bought it, becasue I couldn' wait.
What else is there to say
And I thought I was going to learn about engineering, what a shock.

Thats right, I agreee. The new version did finally fix smp support, though. Changing the physics of a game is bad. Fixing smp is good.
