Because Windows doesn't run on it. I saw a piece on Google news about the netbook fad dying. The premise is that they lost sight of their original goals and are just becoming low powered laptops. IMO, this is mainly down to trying to get windows on netbooks.

This is true. We're seeing fewer with SSDs, they're becoming slightly bigger but still have shitty little atom processors.

So now they're not as portable, more expensive and irrelevant. The EEE's were awesome (typing this on my 901 in bed), cheap, ran forever (compared to a laptop) and could take some serious abuse.

Personally I believe the netbook will be another victim of the Windows monopoly.

I intend the keep my little EEE. I went to Crucial, scored some extra memory and a 64 gig ssd. It runs eveything I want just fine and has more than enough space for when I'm out and about.

Python is an excellent choice. It's very easy to learn and you can do a lot with it.

The down side is it's very easy to do a lot without writing a load of code (not that you're going to get a kid to love programming by writing his own code to parse xml).

It depends on the person but as dumb as it may seem I've seen people w ho dislike Python because of its lack of curly braces. Some people learn one way of doing things and get stuck in what they've learned (even university based learners) so it may be worth introducing him to something like JavaScript too. JavaScript can allow him to do things on the web quickly, has curly braces, is popular and is (in some ways) pretty awful which will make him appreciate Python even more.

It's basically Notepad with the interactive Python shell so you can open it and just type code and watch what it would do (same as typing python in a command prompt) or write a whole script, save and run it. It's very lightweight and doesn't really hold you hand.

Unless we start getting governments to enforce some sort of standard which means customers can return software or sue companies for releasing shit then the best thing for software is for it to be open so anyone can see it and fix it.

Part of me thinks that computer languages are languages like no other and one should be able to see it and use other people's work, at the very least for inspiration. Like you can do with any other language.

Another part of me thinks that true freedom means having the choice to close your code if you want because seeing the code isn't required to use your product.

But again too often companies can effectively release beta shit and be paid hundreds per licence to use it. So what we really need, imo, is standards that stop that. You can argue that, unlike a car, you can't die from bad code but your life can effectively be ruined when your privacy is compromised.

So how about striving for openness and higher standards in quality? If we get at least one of those we should be fine.

The exception should be data. Your data should *never* be stored in a format that only one or two programs can read. It's your data and if the company goes under or just moves on to another product, you're fucked. That shouldn't be allowed.

I don't think the issue is the licence as such but the fact it revolves around a closed source company's language and a company that does not want Linux to succeed. Had it started at lgpl then it probably wouldn't have been an issue. But it appears like they're slowly closing it up because they started on gpl and went to lgpl. What's next after that? Should we care? Maybe not but then maybe we should as MS' philosophy is inherently different from the open source philosophy.

I'm in no way for PETA and in fact think that both PETA and ALF should be considered terrorist organisations and treated as such. Ingrid Newkirk should be deported and never allowed in the US again.

Violence is the wrong way to go about it for either side. As for cops, even they only use violence as a last resort generally when their life or someone else's is in immediate danger.

So using cops as a reason for why either side should be getting violent during protests, for example, is invalid because it's not the same sort of situation.
