  1. Re:Why is it being removed in the first place? on Sony Should Pay For OtherOS Removal, Says Finnish Board · · Score: 1

I believe it was a cost cutting feature. The PS3 didn't really have issues with piracy until geohot crack it wide open. A lot of people claim to be upset now that the feature is removed but the fact is hardly anyone used it. Sony didn't want to waste time and money ensuring the functionality worked for a handful of people every time they upgraded the firmware.

They should have provided it as is and if it broke in a firmware upgrade just say tough shit or fix it after the fact. It didn't really bring on piracy and homebrew games were hardly a threat to them.

I don't think that's the case. I do think they removed it due to the cost of maintaining working functionality that hardly anyone used. Of course now that it has been removed everyone on the internet is in an uproar over it. It enabled homebrew gaming which is no threat to Sony.

They're not beat. The ipod touch is as important to them as the iphone. Apple is a hardware company and selling an ipod touch is just as good as an iphone and in regards to selling apps they both play the same apps. iOS devices are still in the lead. As long as Android's hardware is so varied and complicated for developers then Apple has nothing to fear. That's why Google needs to tighten the reigns on Android and up the quality and consistency of the hardware.

  5. Android has not surged ahead on The Real Reason Apple Is Suing Samsung · · Score: 1

I really like my Android phone but I also dislike the constant changing metrics used to make it out as if Android now the leader. If you to compare Android, which is an OS, against iOS, which is also an OS then there are more iOS devices out there still.

If you want to compare models (ie Droid vs iphone 4) then the iPhone is winning.

Android devices are growing but uncontrollably and there is a ton of variety between the devices. I think it is a bit unfair to count them as one. The reason being is because if consumers are lead to believe there is just Android then they'll no problem in buying any Android phone or tablet and expect the same experience as you'd get on an iOS device. That's not the case and that is going to harm Android's image.

I hope Google does tighten the reigns on what hardware Android can be put onto and be considered an Android phone because quite frankly the thing I hate the most about Android is the quality of the apps. I don't think it's any surprise people rather put more effort into iOS apps. I want to have the openness of the Android OS and the quality apps that are on iOS. Considering an Android phone may or may not have a keyboard or even a touch screen then how can you expect a developer to cover all that variety and put out quality especially when the Android market is pretty shit at filtering things out that your device shouldn't see and if it's a case that someone isn't packaging their software right then Google at least needs to stop that.

I don't want Android to be the Windows of mobile phones.

Europe has contracts too but the biggest difference I generally see is, aside from the iphone, the phone is free unlike the US where you still pay something for the phone and get locked into a contract. But the phone is yours so when the contract is over you can take it anywhere where as in the US that doesn't seem to be the case or they make it exceptionally hard for you to actually do it and even if you do it there are network incompatibilities.

The incompatibility amongst networks is purely anti-consumer freedom. They don't care about the quality of voice calls. In fact when it comes to landlines Verizon's policy always seems to have been as long as you can tell there here something then it's good enough and no improvements are necessary to the line.

But making phone calls is quite a small aspect to smart phones. I and most people I know don't buy these phones to make phone calls. Phone calls are expensive so why buy an expensive phone and expensive contract for that? If calling is what you're interested in then get a dirt cheap phone that will take a beating, get a cheap contract and get some sort of Palm Pilot equivalent for computing if such a thing exists now because let's face it smart phone is the new term for PDA or at least a PDA that happens to make calls too.

I think this is why the iphone continues to be relevant. I would also guess that no one model of Android phone sells more than any one model iphone.

The quality of iphone apps is much much higher because you have less hardware variations. People will recognise the higher quality apps and be happier to pay out for the phone.
