    yeah, at least let the bullied fight back (as long as it doesn't get to the point of death or major physical injury)
    maybe disdain for the weak is part of disdain for anti-bullying efforts; this would show who the weak one really is.

    to clarify the term: a 'put' is an option to sell at a certain price. so one makes money if the market price is lower than the option price.
    It's a bet that the item's price will go down, and in this case a distrust of his banker's stock tips.

    ('call' option is the other way around)

    "Fire in anger" is a military term that uses the word 'anger' non-literally.

    1 is the standard argument why using the A-bombs made sense. (along with deterring Russia and the fact that we were leveling cities conventionally anyway)
    2 is new to me.
    3 is an example of WWII Japan's suicidal stubbornness.

    Yeah, I can see how the nuke decision made sense at least at the time.

    Matthew 7:3-5 is the part about splinter in one eye/beam in another. Not just a failed little/big distinction, but also hypocrisy: criticizing someone else's little problem while ignoring one's own big problem.
    I knew the proverb, but hadn't known the chapter and verse, I put 2 and 2 together based on the context of your post.

    I long since thought that kind of thing would be a good compromise.
    You're right, the religious fundamentalists won't stand for any recognition of homosexual relationships.
    Also, some gay activists won't settle for anything not called marriage.
    The perils of being a moderate: no one's happy.

    anyway, it can be easy to get tripped up by some of the arguments; the slant is in assuming that a racist interpretation is obvious

  19. some of the other answers are right (and thus, the test design is wrong), but some of the arguments seem like lawyering on a technicality
    there are many criticisms of standardized testing, this may or may not be one of them

    Yeah, even with race/ethnicity issues out of the picture, this is still a gun culture story.

    I'm not really sympathetic to the "not tech, why is it here?" arguments. "stuff that matters", after all.
