You made the point of why file sharing is illegal. The more copies of a song or movie that are availible out in the wild, the lower the total market price will be -- just like adding counterfit dollars devalues the entire currency. A lower price for music and movies causes real, monitary harm to the artists and studios.
Actually pyrotechnics are usually in a lesser regulatory class than rocket fuels. "Residential"-grade fireworks are class C (1.4G) and technically not considered explosive. "Commercial" fireworks are class B (1.3G), which are regulated by the ATF, DOT, and other agencies. Things like dynamite, blasting caps and oxygenated rocket fuels are class A (1.2G) which are are very strictly regulated. My point was that any hobby that uses materials from the 1.3G or 1.2G classes is subject to strict regulation.
Why does gaming = not being an adult? Just wondering...
The grandparent doesn't suggest that gaming prevents one from being an adult. What he does suggest however, is that gaming in excess is immature; especially when the gaming addiction harms real relationships. Adults are able to manage balance and moderation in their lives.
The sample targeted advertisements are for non-profit organizations, but it may not be long until someone figures out how much companies will pay to utilize this sort of targeting.
I'd much rather have ads sent to me about things that I might actually want or be interested in. For example, sending feminine hygine ads to me is a waste of their time and mine.
A computer can obviously not grade essays fairly, so it shouldn't be done.
The article states that comparisons between the computer grading and human grading revealed nearly identical scoring. By this data, I don't think it's obvious that a computer can't be as fair as a human.
I got a 5/6, which, according to the computer, was extremely well. However, this was an 83%, which brought down my grade significantly. This computerized grading isn't fair at all.
What does the computer have to do with it? You would have been in the same situation if a human had given you the 5/6. Perhaps what you mean to assert is that the entire test isn't a fair assessment of performance; but that sounds like sour grapes from someone who didn't get a 6.:-)
Typically these systems are predicated on gramatical analysis (use of punctuation and sentence compeleteness) and evidence of citing the text the question is based off. I'd bet its a real easy system to beat.
Hey, if kids are learning grammar, spelling and sentence-writing just to beat the grading program, then it was worth it. Granted there's much more to good writing than syntax, but we have to start somewhere.
I see NO REASON why any geek worth his salt should use ANY SERVICE offered by this company
Because Comcast was the best value and service cable/internet provider I've ever had. Unfortunely, Comcast doesn't service the city I recently moved to; I would be elated if they did. I went from a 3 megabit downstream for ~$50/month to 128k downstream for ~$40/month at my new shit cable company.
Yep, and it's very easy for the fire department to wash away 15 gallons of gasoline with a drizzle from a fire hose. Live batteries that could be punctured may pose a serious obstacle to rescuing a person trapped in the car.
My right to use the cell phone frequencies does take priority, because Verizon has purchased those frequencies for their customers (me) to use. My carrier DOES have a licence; the movie theaters do not. I doubt cell phone users have the rights to sue theaters that use blocking devices, but I would bet that cell providers have both the right and resources to sue them for violating the licenses the cell companies pay for.
I really don't think this is a free speech issue, but you make excellent points regarding the potential commercial abuses of this technology. Just like Visa, MC, Amex, Coke and Pepsi make exclusive deals with malls and theaters, I can definately see Verizon, T-Mobile, etc making similar deals to establish "Verizon only" zones where only competitive signals are blocked or other such nonsense.
Seriously people...this is why workers should be unionizing.
This is exactly why we shouldn't be unionizing. I could only hope that the lazy bastards who spend all day taking personal calls get fired for wasting company time; that just leaves more job openings for people who are willing to earn their keep.
Why should we put up with this shit?
The real question is why should your employer have to put up with your shit while you're getting paid? A job (especially an office job) is hardly a God-granted right; I'm thankful just to have mine. Cripes, it's not like writing code and configuring telco gear is working in a coal mine.
Yep, that's what happened. However at that time there weren't limits on how much speculative lending banks could do. As a result of the crash, banking regulations now limit banks' lending to prevent insolvancy even in market downturns. Consequently, the banking industry is probably the most regulated industry in the USA.
My small business is in the process of getting 3 patents. The total bill is $50,000 for US patents and an additional $100,000 for various foreign patents such as EU countries and Japan.
So join them...learn how to start and run a successful company, and you too can get a 200% raise.

You're exactly right. I'm a fireworks and pyrotechnics hobbiest, and we are governed by the same restrictions on explosives.

Put down the controller and talk to the girl once in a while.

What kind of dumbass modded this up? A gram measures mass; weight is the force exerted on an object due to gravity.

Hybrids have gas tanks and lubricants too. They have twice as many hazardous substances to leak out and burn or electrocute.
It sounds like you're in the Kalamazoo area. I'm just south of Lansing, and I totally agree with your points.
Yes, there are idiots in this country who pay $5 for $0.25 worth of coffee because it comes in a "Starbucks" cup. It's unbelievable really.

Penthouse has had many financial troubles over the past few years actually.
I'd mod this up. My dad has been a pipefitter/plumber for 25 years, and the salary claims in the article blurb are absurd.
