Not true, buy a wireless card for around $80-$90 bucks (several models to choose from), plug it in to your existing old 486 laptop (free) running linux (free) and you've got a sub-100 access point. granted, it isn't quite 'NEW' but it sure works (and nicely, as a firewall/access point/print server).

The cheapest REAL WAP I can find is 185 bucks for the USR access point. Asante, D-Link, and 3-Com are not too far behind (190s), ditto Netgear, Linksys, and on up to Lucent and Cisco. As for myself, I've had my Orinoco setup for about a year now, my wife loves it, my immediate neighbors love it, and I'd like to spread it across my apartment complex but we are not allowed external antennae :) I'll have to give the Pringles can idea a shot...

Q: BTW anyone know of a BeOS-like GUI class library that runs on Linux so we can port our programs? A: Have you checked out the Berlin? The only way to get anything like BeOS performance is to scrap X-windows. I don't know if Berlin is any faster but it seems to be the only other prevalent GUI to Linux.

On a semi-related note, what happened to the GUI which you could get from Kaffe 1.1 (or so). You didn't even need an X server at all, Kaffe drew its own AWT classes. This would be great, to be able to simply boot the Linux kernel and bring up a JDesktopPane.

Absolutely right. If those with power wish to keep that power at any price, they will until their power is taken away from them. In the case of corporations, this has to come from the shareholders deciding that they won't support any company which does these kinds of things. Obviously, that is not going to happen, there will always be a lot of people who, if given the option, will be glad to profit from the misfortunes of others. It has always been, and sadly will always be. So that leaves the government. This has to come from our votes. We have to vote for people who will not allow corporations to make slaves of the third world, or be slave masters themselves. And while we're at it, can we lock up the executives of companies for human rights violations? That's a decent deterrant for the CEO of Intel or Nike. No more sweatshops or you will go to prison.

    • Assume that the link layer offers no security.
    • Use higher-level security mechanisms such as IPsec [3] and SSH [8] for security, instead of relying on WEP.
    • Treat all systems that are connected via 802.11 as external. Place all access points outside the firewall.
    • Assume that anyone within physical range can communicate on the network as a valid user. Keep in mind that an adversary may utilize a sophisticated antenna with much longer range than found on a typical 802.11 PC card.

For all you 'blah blah, such and such is behind warcraft II?' people, I'll first say that I loved Warcraft II. It is probably my 5th favorite game ever. But none of my favorites made the top 10 anyway. My list:
    1. Wizardry I-III (Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, LL, etc, which I still play on occasion under Apple ][ emulator)
    2. Zork/Enchanter (I lump them as one, and yes, I still have my box sets)
    3. Eye of the Beholder I-II (which I still play on occasion)
    4. Sim City 2000 (which I wish I hadn't broke, I was SO addicted to this game)
    5. Ultima III (which I don't play anymore, although you can under Apple ][ emulator)
    6. Warcraft II
One of the reasons I REALLY love Blizzard games (and no, I don't work for them) is that their hardware requirements vs. how great they look and play is absolutely right up there with the best in the 'biz'. Check out the hardware requirements for Starcraft or Diablo, probably a P-90. And I -loved- those games. Call me biased (bait) but I hate overloaded FPS games like Quake, UT, Daikatana, etc, etc. They take a P-300 and mega graphics cards to play. I'll stick with Blizzard and my trusty P-120, but I just might upgrade for Warcraft III :) And yes, I grew up on an Apple ][ playing Infocom and Sir-TECH games. I am a geek, of course.
