    Having been in upper management at a poorly run company and after arguing with the CEO about various IT related decisions, I can say very confidently that some people simply make bad, short-sighted decisions that might seem more profitable in the short run but end up coming to bite them in the ass later and costing significantly more money to fix than if it had simply been done correctly the first time.

    You've gotten lucky. There are a lot of horrible shops where it's always crunch time. And usually because of poor decisions by upper management that could have been prevented with a little bit of planning.

    a) If people don't give a fuck and won't do a thing unless you tell them explicitly what they need to do.
    b) The project reaches a complexity where individual members lose sight of the overal goal and state.

    In other words, most projects at your average company.

    Why can't more people think like you? I completely agree with government agencies rating products and services, mandating truth in labeling. If that food contains rat droppings, then yes I want to know. But maybe I enjoy rat droppings now and then. Government as an equalizing force between parties, yes. Government acting as my nanny, no.

    I imagine being forced to drop your speed has something to do with the safety improvement. It's very easy for someone not paying attention to blow through a standard stop light intersection at 50mph. Try that in a roundabout and you will end up jumping a curb and landing in the middle of the roundabout.
