Let's not forget "When it Matters". Too much of today's published news is either (1) filler that seeks only to improve readership rather than to inform or (2) commentary meant to spice it up when it actually only inserts bias into a story in order to remove or disguise the facts. (Reminder: thoughtful commentary that reeks of research is fine; overly flamboyant commentary is too stylish for a "just the facts ma'am" approach, which is what I want from the news report.)
This is why my morning Internet routine involves checking my (e)mail, Slashdot, and Google News. After that, I hit the daily grind and come back some ten hours later to make the same rounds. Only then might I comment on something on my web log, and there hasn't been much time for that this fall.
(1) I worked in a public library for 19 months, and despite the requirement to keep an eye on the people using the public internet access computers, it isn't possible to have someone looking over their shoulders for the entire duration of a work day. It has become increasingly common for various deviant internet activity to be traced back to public workstations such as at public libraries. In fact, the library at which I worked received a visit from a representative of the FBI, because it was "suspected" that someone had been using our computers to upload child pornography.
(2) In order to "steal" internet access via wireless internet, the signal needs to be available. I don't know about your area, but I live in a fairly technologically progressive town, and it's not here except on school campuses. This is probably too obvious to deserve mention here, but still...
I always thought that the right thing to do, and the perfect way for the Simpsons to end, would be for Stewie to appear in an episode (the final episode) of the Simpsons, and he and Maggie can team up to blow up Springfield, Stewie's first step toward world domination (also revealing that Maggie's been plotting for years inspired by Bart's rebelliousness and Lisa's genius). Then I suppose as they migrate back toward Quahog, something could happen to Maggie (she gets hit by a bus, she's taken to a foster home, Stewie kills her a la "Porphyria's Lover") and in any case, the Simpsons are dead and "Family Guy" takes over the 8:00 Sunday slot.
Okay, you can ignore the plotting part, but I thought since I first saw "Family Guy" that it should replace the Simpsons in that slot on Sunday nights, since it is essentially a modernized and funnier version of Matt Groening's overdone masterpiece.
If Linux is the Matrix, and Windows is the rebel humans fighting back... would Slashdot be the Merovingian, the supreme trafficker of information hoping to know all that it can and in the mean time falling short of disguising its favoring Linux?
No. Linux is the unwelcome power that arose, and then Microsoft got all bitchy and tried to quell its uprising, and then Linux (this is the future talking now) took over and dominated, subjugating Windows to a meak virtual existence via Lindows... until The One fought back to work his way up...to...a truce?! So Linux is allowing Windows simply to exist... nothing more.
So I guess Billy Boy is trying to tell us that Linux is harder to swallow. In either case, it's pretty obvious that Windows has emerged victorious on a technicality.
Other than that, I know some guys that would rather choke on a blue pill that size than go Windows.
...is not collecting dust. It sits with all my other calculators. They are so tightly crammed into a little shoebox, along with their instruction booklets, that there is no room for air to get in or dust to settle. It's actually kinda sad that the very machines that bore my appetite for tech toys and knowledge are reduced to boxdwelling on a cabinet shelf directly below my stereo.
On the other hand, it may even be more sad that they still sit so close to human touch, considering that no one has gotten any use out of them since my freshman year in college, some three years ago.
That TI-82 was good to me. It saw my first programming efforts come to fruition: from simple BASIC math applications (for which I became a seemingly proficient developer) to minor assembly applications (which I never got deeply into). Since getting my TI-83 in high school I haven't used the TI-83, and since getting the TI-89 my senior year I haven't used any of the others (except occasionally the TI-83 for its financial calculating prowess!)...
Oh the history of calculators. I still remember the days when I worked on the web site Calc.org, which was then called Dimension-TI (heh), and later the TI-Files... and of course we all can remember submitting to and downloading from ticalc.org, the only of all the TI calculator web sites with just the right look and feel to endure the many years of evolving technology and still remain on top.
Sorry for this post. I think I was reminiscing. Hmm...
Imagine being able to list Google as one of your former employers. (For that matter, why would "former" need any place here?) I'd imagine that ranks reasonably high among Slashdot readers, at least in relation to Microsoft...
Holy crap! penix.net still exists?! I remember years ago when nickd 0wned penix.net and he hosted my web site at mccord.penix.net. Ahh, the good ol' days... How ya been?
...and longer live his philosophy on intellectual property rights. Knowledge should be useful and available for its own sake and not hoarded by and for those who need it least among us.
Matrix discussion groups have been pondering the implications of this game since soon after Enter the Matrix came out in May. This is six-months-old news. I'm almost tired of discussing it... Almost.
Because it is not mentioned in the story or any of the highly modded comments yet, I thought I'd remind the masses once again that the extended version of The Two Towers will be released to the masses on November 18. I will be among the first in line!
Did anyone else read the headline of this story to mean that Mars had been attacked? I don't know where my mind was going with that... Maybe The Onion knows.
This was announced before Reloaded hit theatres, and it was met with an equally fervent response. Oh, and by the way, the 35mm film hits theatres on November 5!
But the Separatists (led by Tyranus, et al) are the ones who had the clones created. They are orchestrating the war, and only a tiny few of them know it.

If the assumption is that Windows was dominant before Linux came along, then I'd certainly hope that more than 5% of today's Linux users formerly used Windows. I'd say more than 50%. You can't compare those statistics fairly when Linux has been the pop culture underdog for the last eight years (which is an eon or two in computer years).
I like what I'm seeing/reading here. It may not go far, but it's a valuable first step. I like! The problem, I think, is that the equal opportunity setup of such a record label will make it difficult for any of the label's bands to achieve any kind of pop/cult status.
Maybe someone like Tool should release an album under this label to see how it goes. Yeah, right.

I hope this isn't an ominous sign (and I doubt it is, since I am insignificant in the grand scheme of things), but what's Firefly?
Okay, you can ignore the plotting part, but I thought since I first saw "Family Guy" that it should replace the Simpsons in that slot on Sunday nights, since it is essentially a modernized and funnier version of Matt Groening's overdone masterpiece.
"And he's so deliciously evil! ... Gotta get me some of that!"
That's why the red pill is so easy to swallow. Once they've got you... (insert evil laugh here)

We were promised flying cars by the new millennium decades ago. Any news on grafting automobiles with flight technology? I want my flying car!
