  17. Re:Just use Postgres on MySQL Man Pages Silently Relicensed Away From GPL · · Score: 2

Tried it. Didn't work. Because I rely on iterative development, I use "make-it-work" statements a lot and have one master SQL script that I can use to both create a new database or upgrade an existing one (see Evolving A Database With MySQL). This requires a lot of "IF NOT EXISTS" clauses or "ON CONFLICT" clauses. MySQL features quite a few of them, and I could not find most of them in Postgres. Even the SQL standard MERGE command is not supported.

Also, with the zillion ways of logging in to a database, I had to follow a few "just type this and it will work" manuals on the internet to be able to log in into my own local sandbox database. I still don't know how I could ever configure Postgres to do authorization and I fought myself through a large part of the manual. It's just too complex and abstract.

  25. Re:Human ownership on Congress Proposes Strategy For Fighting Patent Trolls · · Score: 1

Only humans can own patents (not legal persons which are now corporations.) The rights should be non transferable (as most rights should be.)

You are so right. "Intellectual Property" rights in the current system rarely rest with the people they naturally belong to. If you are to claim ownership of an idea, it should be obvious that it had to be your idea to begin with. You cannot transfer the fact that you invented something (patent), nor the fact that you wrote something (author's right), nor the fact that you designed something (trademark, design patent, etc).

(I know that sounds too unusual, but bare with me.)

I am not a nudist, but thank you for the invitation.

Tying IP rights to people will not stop the corporations from taking the profits. Patents, for example, are way to expensive for mere mortals, so the corporations will want to "help", but off course under their conditions (agreement to stay with the company, part of the profits, etc). A right is a right that you should simply have because of the situation are in. Not something you have to buy.
