Agreed. But these are "government employees and contractors who work on cybersecurity matters." Meaning they are the ones who are supposed to be the ones stopping that stuff. Or, at least, they are in the IT industry. I'm a network engineer so I know what it takes to secure against this type of thing and it isn't hard. It's also not hard to KNOW, as an end user, what not to click on when it comes to spam and phishing attacks.

It was an open invitation for people to disagree with me. I was merely curious about what others thought. I am by no mean trying to pull the wool over anyone eyes. It was simply a question to the users of slashdot, who are more often than not also people like myself: very tech savvy users who enjoy a good sci-fi/fantasy movie. I am so confused. It seems as if there is this unspoken rule about Sci Fi shows (on any network) that if they don't pull down the MOST AMAZING RATINGS EVER IN THE HISTORY OR SCI FI it gets cancelled, usually before any kind of resolution to the storyline can be gracefully made. This really pisses me off.

  16. Not a problem with viewership on BSG Prequel Series Caprica Canceled · · Score: 1

The problem was the show. It just wasn't that good. It was OK. But the ONLY reason it was OK was because there is no other good Sci-Fi on TV except Stargate Universe, and even that isn't great.

Gone are the days of good sci-fi shows that are light and fun to watch while still invoking that sense of wonder and inspiration that lets you detach from the present world and wish you were part of this future or alternate world. Stargate Universe and Caprica are perfect examples. They eschew the fun parts of sci-fi for what production studios and writers deem as a necessary foray into the "drama" or "darker" side of things, when all we want are good shows like the sci-fi classics yesterday such as Stargate SG-1, Star Trek TNG or DS9 (or even Voyager!), or Babylon 5. The difference is all those shows DID have a "dark" side, but it was kept separate from the feel-good parts of the show. The parts of shows that made people say "wow, if this is how the future is going to be I can look forward to it!". Most of the sci-fi around now makes you go "ugh" because it just isn't fun to watch.

I miss good sci-fi. And I am willing to bet a lot of others do too, especially based on the cancellation rate of sci-fi shows and the fact that the big networks just won't pickup a big sci-fi show anymore. Thing is, if someone would just stop this whole move into "drama" for the sci-fi genre, I think the viewers would come back in droves.

  25. Hooray for artificially holding back technology! on Long Island Town Enacts Tough Cell Tower Limits · · Score: 5, Insightful

Honestly, this all comes down to how dumb people are. I'll give an example from where I grew up

It was a relatively small town, but within 10-20 minutes of large cities here in New York. There is literally NO cell phone reception around the entire radius of the town. You have to drive at least 10-15 minutes to get cell reception. So Verizon (and at that time, CellularOne who was recently bought out by AT&T) wanted to put up a tower right in the middle of the town behind some barns and silos. Not visible from the road but if you tried hard enough you could see it.

The town, who I knew from experience hated not having cell service, was concerned about property values dropping and how "bad the tower would look" when driving by...so Verizon proposed using one of the "camouflage" towers that looks like a pine tree. The town reviewed it, and STILL said no because it "didn't look enough like a tree". So Verizon came back and said "ok we will build the tower inside a silo. You won't be able to see it AT ALL. The reception will be reduced slightly because of it being enclosed, but you will still have service". Instead of approving it, they put it up for a vote, and the tower STILL voted it down over concerns of "radiation".

Weeks later I remember hanging out with friends, whose fathers and mothers were on the town board, and others who had voted no, and hearing them and their kids bitch about the fact that there still wasn't cell reception, and blaming the cell companies for NOT PROVIDING A FEASIBLE SOLUTION!

I think this happens more often than not around the country, where stupid backwards people who don't really know what they are talking about, wind up shooting town technological advances in favor of "oh that looks bad" or "oh i heard it does _______ which is bad" without knowing the facts, or understanding how important technology can be, especially in rural areas that have been without it. In this case, lack of cell phone reception and broadband internet kept many businesses and other things important for growth of a town or city out of the area because of the lack of available technology.

It really amazes me at how resistant people are. I'd rather have my property value go down a little than be without cell reception or internet service in this day in age. It hurts more not to have it than it would to just grin and bear it for the good of advancement.
