I guess i didnt explain my reasons for believing things are changing. First of all I am not talking at all about this f00 jwz, I'm talking about Networks. Huge networks run by internet users for internet users... no companies. The Napsters and Gnutellas of the world are going to bring this to us. However I'm skeptical of any corporate run networks like Napster. This is because users want their freedoms and corporations are just not going to cut it in this regard. There will be a time when companies will work with/run user networks but the time is still a year or 2 down the road. So if Napster can survive till then, good for them. Anyhow, I liked the article simply because hackers are starting to come out of the cracks in the sidewalk and see the sun for the first time. hehe Hack the Planet

Yes interesting observation, one made by our forefathers in the 18th century, and precisely the reason for the legislative architecture today... Ever wonder why we have a Senate and a House? Well the Senate is supposed to be a more educated and exclusive bunch, who tend to be more rational and whos purpose is to balance out the House which is made up of ordinary citizens who through ignorance could make mass irrantional descisions. Yes a direct vote is scary and thats why any internet based political system should have some equivalent of a Senate to keep things from going crazy.

Basically they are further legitimizing the sytem by creating this prior-art database. Why even bother with prior-art, why not just get rid of the patent system all together and allow people to manage their own intellectual assets. Basically, if you don't want someone to know something don't announce it till your ready. And if someone finds out your 'secrets' and can create something better than what you did and faster, yes then maybe it will seem unfair, but thats competition my friend. And you will be allowed to do the same to others. Now for those leechers out there, im sure there will be a way to publically humiliate them. Not only that, but if you have spent copious amount of time understanding a concept or system you are better suited than any who may have copied you to further improve upon it. A deep understanding of the underlying concepts of a system can not be copied, that takes a lot of reading and due dilligence. No one can take that away from you so don't worry about it.

The government is going to go open-source because open souce espouses the same ideals as our democratic system, mainly the ideal of equal opportunity to all. Open source provides that for those without the funds to buy software owned by money-grubbing corporations. I just say this in jest, as I am all for money-grubbing corporations =) In fact this is why I am not for open-source because to me it is the equivalent of wanting to work for the government.. bleh how boring. The real money is being made and will continue to be made by corporations or in the future the replacement of the corporation, the clan. Whats a clan you say? A clan is my defenition for a new form of legal entity that is half corporation and half a group of friends.

Why is it then that I do not see the CDs prices dropping by this amount. This is unfair, you are ripping me the consumer off. For every CD I own you own me at least one or 2 CDs, so we take back what is ours.. Napster aids us in doing so, they do not charge us for getting our money back from thieves like you.

  18. How to kill patents and still promote innovation on Patent Office Director: "My Hands Are Tied" · · Score: 1
As some of you have pointed out, one of the main reasons for having patents was for encouraging the release of new technology to the public so that the public can build on it and we could continue to innovate. The government feared that if we didnt have patents that we would encourage businesses to keep everything they do secret making innovation suffer as a result. WELL guess what, now that we have the internet even if we create a patent-free system and busineses become more secretive , innovation will still thrive because the internet allows us to communicate our ideas broadly and quickly. It only takes one other person to come up with the same idea before it can theoretically spead to hundreds of thousands of people. This In the past we couldn't share ideas so easily, so yes patents were necessary. But today this problem is solved because of the internet. Yes a patent-free system will encourage business secrecy (the jury is still out on whether this is bad or not) but at least I have shown that innovation will not suffer. So legislators out there realize this and create a patent free system NOW!

Each business may find that profits dwindle, but the sheer number of consumers that most busineses can have, small businesses in particular, goes up by several billion people making up for the difference. Also technology should drive costs down. The only costs to worry about then are the costs of human labor. We won't have perfect market unless we can get rid of this factor.. the human factor... hmmm is it possible to upload our conciousnesses to protons yet.. nah i dont think so.

We have to be careful or it may lead to paranoia or extreme-secrecy on the part of companies who feel that they are not protected by the government.
