My wife treats patients with Kemo, and the pain and suffering some of these people go through is off the chart. Many times she treats patients that they clinically know have zero percent chance of recovery.
Knowing you would die from the cancer well before the HIV would you not give it a shot? I think the overwelling answer would be Yes!
Unlike many procedures and treatments, this would be one in which there would not be any lack of willing participants.
Pretty easy, if it does not exist in the patent office, try to push it through and see what happens. About all these companies do anymore. Prior art does not mean squat.
If this trend does not stop there are going to be two groups of software developed. Those corporations of large massive power who have either bought up or squashed with patent lawsuits (and then bought up) and those developers of freeware. What will that mean for consumers? Higher prices or go running for a free alternative.
Who knows, in 20 years, if all the middle competition is destroyed, companies like IBM, Solaris, etc, could go after Linux and GNU because they are cutting into their bottom line.
On the flip side, is if you do a search for "best operating system", your first result is linux.org. In fact, I was not even able to find Microsoft listed. Amiga and QNX even came up before Windoze.
I am a little confused by this. Distributing a card with a chip with a unique ID? I didn't think Borg cared about uniqueness when it came to assimilation?
Who said I was trolling? You are trying to compare the salaries of those that do and not not go to college. Maybe you should try comparing the fact that without a college degree your more likely to be doing labour jobs where with a college degree you are going to be doing office jobs. Nothing like busting my back every day for a 30K/year salary without a degree compared to sitting in a nice office making 70k/year with a degree.
This arguement even use to work in the tech industry. "You don't need a college degree to become a programmer" was the old saying. Go try finding a tech job (in the US) without at least a bachelors in CS or MIS. You are thrown out the door.
I strongly recommend you reading
Education Pays 2004 before you come on here telling the slashdot world that a college education is not worth it. What is funny is that you just look at the money made after, and not even the social experience of college.
Maybe we need to upgrade that slogan? "The world needs burger flippers too"
Going to a four-year college and getting a degree really isn't all that important anymore. Yeah, you get a job, yeah you get money, and yeah you have fun but honestly the pay off in the end really isn't all that worth it.
Very good point, and I totally agree, seriously. As the great Judge Smails has stated, "the world needs ditch diggers to".
Pretty much what I think it is also. But its not like Nick will have too much of a problem finding a lawyer or two that will do this pro bono. I would think there is one or two.. or huge boat loads of lawyers or soon to be lawyers running around Harvard. Great second semester assignment if you ask me. Would be fun to walk into a court room with 50+ lawyers.
When a company or organisation starts suing its own customers
Not exactly. Many people here are thinking big names that SCO is targeting (Google, SGI, etc). But its not going to be so.
Off hand I am taking a shot in a dark here but I believe it be a medium size business such as West Teleservices. West runs thousands of VRUs each with a copy of SCO on it. Well that was the case. Recently they have started migrating those machines to Linux.
The lawsuits will be targeting those companies that are already trying to shit-can SCO in a feeble attempt to stop them from doing so.
Unless you are a gamer or looking to compute Pi to the last digit, most of todays "out of production" (even lower then "budget") processors are fast enough for most of today's computing tasks. My cool running Duron 1000 still powers my file server like a champ.
The more they release these fire breathing, heavy Watt using, frying pan of CPU's, the easier it gets on our pocket books.
Wake me when a cheap "build your own system" RISC alternative hits the market.
Since you have a power meter and know the juice your boxes suck, here is the readout for a cheap laptop
Dell Inspiron 1100 with a 2Ghz Celery (15" LCD, 640 Meg ram, Wireless Card)
Average 25 watts at.12 amps
And it has a built in UPS, is mobile and can be charged up with a car cig lighter.
Laptop ALL the way. But I am not sure it will really matter, your going to get in the middle of know where and even though you think your going to use your computer... you won't. It will realize that it is all that is evil in this world... then decide to grow a beard:-)
Maybe they need to rip out all those camera's and replace them with X-ray machines and utilize this software. Not only would we have a person's blue prints, but could make some very nice composites of what these people look like.
If people did not want to be "shot" they would need to wear full lead suits all over the place.
Come on, health risks from long term exposure to X-Ray can't be that bad (joke)
If they were the same quality cameras they use in say convenience stores or banks how could they work in the first place.
You know what I mean, black and white, fuzzy, jerky motion of peoples its shooting. I am sure we all have seen them on the 10 o'clock news with the news person say "Have you seen this man/women".
They are so bad that a few months ago a truck rolled into a local convenience store for a smash and grab. The cameras were not even able to make out the license plate at this one particular location.
One would think with all of today technologies, massive digital storage space and low prices for this hardware a decent system could be put in.
evil like IBM
Ah, but IBM started "evil" (in the 50's), it was not till recently that they have been turning to the "good".
As for the rest of your list, yep evil as hell.
Thoughtcrime? Dont think so.
This is clearly a copyright matter. You just can't take Ashlee Simpson's works and post them freely on the internet. She needs to eat too.
let the farmer become the "oil" barrens of the 21st century and let them grow hemp for biodiesel production.
I believe estimates state that if 25% of all crop land was hemp, the USA would be self sufficiant. Not to mention, give farmers a "true" cash crop.
If I could, I would give you a +5 for the truth.

I can go buy my 1300 pound shipped JL421 Badonkadonk Land Cruiser/Tank happly knowing that shipping will run me $79!

Guess the search engine is not so bad after all.
HA!
How hard is it for Microsoft to "deliver more security and privacy"? Starting from nothing, it should be pretty easy.

It's not where the parties were happening that concerned me, it was knowing where the police were at.

Do you know then if there are special implications placed on the Mini that causes the warranty to void if you do open it up?
Depends ... could be hidden costs. On the specifications page it clearly states the following.
"Memory upgrade must be performed by an Apple Authorized Service provider."
So does that void the warrenty if you crack the case open to swap out say the memory or drives?
takes me back to the days of Zork ...
IBM engaged in to put SCO out of business
.. SCO was doing a bang up job of that on thier own without the help of IBM.
Ha
Might be a good match. Phantoms running SCO OS.
.. it is already considered a joke amoung professionals.
SCO as a gaming OS. Might as well
This is about the only way SCO could get there OS distributed anymore is by brute force upon the uninformed.

Ummm
Non-Unix Operating system?
Must be running Windows 2000 .....
From a few stories ago.
