You're being personal, and there's no need to because agree with your viewpoint.
But if you think people make rational decisions after carefully considering all the factors - well then, you have far more faith in humanity than I do.
And with summer heat, humidity and rain coming up...no thank you. I have to look at least somewhat professional when I arrive at work.
Three out of nine people in my office cycle to work, including one of the directors. Maybe we don't look professional when we arrive at work, but since we have a shower here, it's only for a few minutes in the morning.
Actually, I'd say our culture is almost at the point where seeing someone around the office in cycle gear in the morning is a good look, as it shows you're not contributing yet another car to the clogged roadways. I understand that Americans have a very different attitude to these things, and it's a pity.
Agreed. MySpace was in a great position to become THE indy music network, but they failed to realise that opportunity and went through with a massive redesign that alienated all those users.
Minimum load limits. Nuclear power plants (and many others) can't generate below a certain level. A massive earthquake probably just destroyed all your transmission lines, and you can't generate power without somewhere to send it to.
Yeah you could design a smaller nuclear power plant that was only meant to power the coolant facilities in the case of an emergency. But if that's all it's used for, why not use a diesel generator instead?
But people tend to notice very windy days. They don't keep a running count of the average wind speed
We have a similar situation in New Zealand. Wellington is known as the windy city, but it has a lower average wind speed than Auckland. Wellington has more windy days than Auckland, but it also has more no-wind days, which brings the average down.
This is because Auckland gets sea-breezes more often than not during the summer, while Wellington doesn't, but Wellington gets pummelled by gradient breezes due to its location next to the Cook Strait.
Surely it would be priced at the short run marginal cost of generation? This would be insignificant (the fuel is free!) - the primary cost of solar plants is constructing them.
Do you mean that 14c/kWh is the long run marginal cost?
As a non-American, can someone explain it for me? Who is it? My best guess is that it's a ultra-conservative Christian who uses the phrase 'you can't explain that' as evidence of god.
I've read a few times that a healthy competitive industry has the #2 guy selling no less than half of the #1 guy. Similarly, #3 selling no less than half of the #2 guy. The more players, the less that each company can have of the overall market. This keeps all competitors on their toes.
I'm not sure that's right. The HH Index for a 2 player market using your conditions is 55%, for a 3 player it's 43%, and seems to be 33% for a large number of players,
"A HHI index below 0.01 (or 100) indicates a highly competitive index. A HHI index below 0.1 (or 1,000) indicates an unconcentrated index. A HHI index between 0.1 to 0.18 (or 1,000 to 1,800) indicates moderate concentration. A HHI index above 0.18 (above 1,800) indicates high concentration."
So they all fall into the 'high concentration' category.
It's no wonder that we have a generation of women who are self-conscious of their bodies. No, you're not ugly, you've had kids, you're supposed to look like that.
Statistically we are actually overdue for one of those strains to hit, which is part of what fuels the media frenzy every time a new strain of flu is discovered.
I'm not sure if you're arguing with me or not, but the tone of your post seems to imply it. But I pretty much agree with everything you've said. I was pointing out that I understand why people become religious. Yes, I see it as a weakness, but I'm not stupid enough to state that I'll never be in such a similar position myself.
I don't ridicule religious people. I pity them, and hope that I never become one of them.
Like many people, I once thought that religion was a way for scared people to deal with their own mortality. Then I lost a brother to cancer, and realized that in fact it's a way for sad people to deal with their loved ones' mortality.
I understand people turning to religion, and I just hope that my life is never shit enough that I end up being one of them. But then I'm still young.
This brings to mind the phrase 'don't have such an open mind your brain falls out'. Yeah, when you get right down to it no one can really disprove anything.

Do you think most people make decisions taking into account long term monetary costs and environmental externalities?
Or do people perhaps look for the cheapest bulb on the shelf and buy that?
Yours is a common viewpoint, but it's not true.
"While the average age of a gamer is 35, over a quarter (26%) is age 50 or over. The bulk of gamers are in the 18 to 49 year age range. "

The 'average' gamer of 35 was 11 when Ultima IV was released.
Also I suspect older gamers are more likely to pay money for their games as opposed to cash strapped teenagers/students.

Given that the solar panels will be vertical, being a long way north is a good thing.

No. you are incorrectly believing that monopoly has a negative connotation
I dunno. That game was pretty evil. It caused of hundreds of arguments in our household.
But we've always been at war with Eastasia.
Don't you mean too smart to be a juror? Intelligence is not a desired quality in Jurors.
I can say, with certainty, that it is more than 4.358 ly away and less than 4.372 ly.
Well, maybe.
I've seen these popping up lately.

With the new Slashdot comment system I can't tell if you're replying to someone talking about Jesus or talking about Glen Beck.
