It's my understanding that when he "helps" he does it in a very "for profit" way. Like buying expensive medicine for poor people, when they could have been helped in a less profitable way......and more sustainable way.....
So he is still being bill gates........ and not that humanitarian....... (see what happened with OLPC)
Oh, this info i got, i got from the net, at a place called slash dot.

And this poster, and other like them, all have the name hXXX where XXX is 3 digits!!!!! interesting.....
Sorry but this is silly. Comparing a computer to a fridge just is wrong.
Lets try more obvious examples......
Why isn't a computer more like a table saw..... I turn on a table saw and all my wood gets cut! (fingers too if trying to use a table saw the most "users" use computers).
Why isn't a computer more like an automobile, I don't need to get a license to use it. and cars, well you just turn em on and nobody dies of drunk driving accidents.....
Why isn't a computer more like an Oxy-Acetylene Welding torch... just turn on the valve and wellll I'm getting dizy and tired......
Why isn't a computer more like skydiving... well
Yes computers can and will a lot more auto configuring..... but lets not forget you don't just plug in 'anything' and it works....
Except a fridge..... I plugin my fridge and keep my pets in there, they auto configure............
more to the point who cares if it replaces the desktop
I never thought it was going to do so, it didn't make sense. I DOES make sense to put it into every things that has a a cpu and no legacy crap to force it to be something else. But yeah I own apps that go back more than 10 years I still use. And it makes sense to have a pc or mac for those apps. and to continue to buy those types to continue to use them.
so I think it was naive to think that everyone would have linux on their desktop, no reason to.
But When the next thing takes over (like the ipad+ or something closer to a laptop/desktop/pad thing)
I bet ANYTHING it will run some variant of Linux. (or unix)
And that's how the microsoft monopoly will break up.
Well in all fairness, facebook is the only one here that can stand up and make a difference. It's nearly impossible for each person that's been wronged to prove their point, but if facebook gets enough complaints they can wave there deep pocketed arms and say, "wanna fight us, cuz we can fight for a loooong time"
So no, they aren't the bastions of privacy, but they are on the right side here. So good for them.
at this point i might think the folks at microsoft are saying: "how can we leverage this foxconn thing to get us more profit, apple has some good ideas sometimes!"
I have to agree with the poster here. This is a fine book, and microsoft is sharing this information (for a price). This is very good old school practice.
But to compare it with open source is really really bad and reaching. The whole, "Can't modify and redistribute" thing is the 900 pound gorilla here.
One of the most important things about open source is the right to modify and redistribute.
The whole thing reeks of non FOSS. A good example of old school vs new school. Look at the java documentation online anywhere
It's pretty nice. Now look a the PHP documentation. See how at the bottom of EVERY page php as user contributed examples and comments.
I usually find these WAAAAAAY more useful that what's above them. Java never has these.
to me it's the difference between night and day.
one place, your peers help you (the bizarre), the other makes a sale(the church). (probably helps too)

In capitalism it's Man Exploits Man.
In Soviet Russia, it's just the opposite.
Why isn't netflix working????? I can say why .......

<quote>Why would MS want any sales or support staff, which is customer facing, to be using Apple or Google products in front of customers?
</quote>
Because they wanted the customer to have the best possible user experience.
And if you work for a company that is doing work for "the agency", you have to refer to them as "the agency"
