Do you really want to do all the validation testing every time you put back to the trunk? Including Installation testing? There are only so many scenarios you can catch with test-first development. The rest are usually discovered by the testers. That's why they still have jobs and why you can actually accomplish anything in a CI environment. There will always be the heroic tales of development teams that are on version 11000 on the trunk and have never busted a customer. Maybe you are him/her? >.>

For the rest of us simpletons, we prefer a validated release to start baselines from.

If you employ a fully featured VCS like ClearCase (or others) you can even run multiple simultaneous baselines releasing feature content while hardening your previous releases...and then merge between them. 0.0 Yes, good SCM teams let you do this and protects you from the worst of your merge nightmares.

I am just glad I was not riding in that simulator. Did anyone else notice the separation, and the flight path of the (in the future to be occupied) simulator? The booster and the simulator appeared to tumble after separation. It could have been the camera angle I suppose, but that front section should have continued on, correct?

  6. Bring on the Eye Candy! on What's the Importance of Graphics In Video Games? · · Score: 1

TOA is crap IMHO. When the new content is released for WoW, the VERY first thing I do is crank the video settings all the way to max and go see what surprises that developers have hidden away in little corners of the universe. I have found a few (admittedly very few) vistas in areas areas of Azeroth that are visually stunning when you view them from the right spot. I have heard that people would actually watch the sunsets in UltimaOnline. (though I have never played that one) I want more of this and I want it to change with time. More realism, not less; and better graphics engines that allow darkness and light to become a playable challenge in the game. Snow, wind and rain that are more than just cheesy random visual effects. Trees that look as good up close as they do from the air. An engine that can intelligently paint/scale a texture applied over a large surface so you don't see the repetitions so clearly. I love walking around the Blood-Elf areas in WoW because much more care was taken in that area than in the other areas. I guess it all depends on what you play the game for.

America and Americans need to get over this childish prudishness and fracking grow up. Who gives a crap if the TSA rep can see me in 3D nudeness, at least he/she isn't holding me up for an hour to do a literal strip search. Whatever they can do to make boarding faster and easier, just do it. Grow up America, get over yourselves and your insecurities. Privacy wise, this is less invasive than many things we put up with daily. I put myself in that line to get on a plane. I did not ask for a dammn video van from Google to come tooling down my street taking pictures of my property. I did not ask the NSA to listen to even the first 5 seconds of my private phone calls. Get focused on the real issues and get over your nudity phobia.

  9. The law of Magic vs Sci-Fi on The State of Sci-Fi MMOs · · Score: 1

Clarke's laws (wiki) illustrate the problem with deploying a sufficiently meaty Sci-Fi MMO. Once you develop a combat system that has an interesting level of depth to it, it becomes indistinguishable from a fantasy system. The graphics and the names change. In the end, you still have DPS, Tanks, Healers/Repair and crafters (or a loot system) that support all of their efforts to establish domination as a player/guild/alliance.

Dear god why can I not have mod points when I know what the hell is being discussed! The article quoted in the previous post is SO right and is compounded by the proclivity of manufacturers to hook directly into the firmware on the drive's controller to get even faster performance times. You will _almost_ never be able to recover a failed SATA drive in a RAID 5 configuration where the manufacturers have played with the SATA drive's firmware for performance because of this very issue. SATA drives != fault tolerant enterprise solution! I have personal experience with this phenomena having been sold down the river by a nameless company which no longer does business in the US; I suspect because of this very issue.

For example, the tower outside the Alarian Stronghold has been burning for three years now... The bridge over the lake in Redridge Mountains has also been under constructio... wait, nevermind! That is pretty realistic right there. The librarian leading around the school kids always says the same stuff, etc. I really dont _know_ how hard this stuff is to update from month to month, but it _seems_ that this might be an easy place to add in a little sparkle and keep the back-story current for the main plot. I know that it's polish instead of new flashy content, but I think it would be worth it.
