    I am very sorry about what happened to your mother.

    The main reason that any vehicle is barely controllable on icy roads is that stupid Americans don't buy proper winter tires. Having a bunch of AWD vehicles around has only made this problem worse, because with AWD you can get moving even under the most marginal of traction conditions, but then you can't control the vehicle. Also, we let people drive with grossly inadequate training which no doubt contributed to the SUV driver losing control. Your mother was obviously a responsible driver, but the person in the SUV was, as other posters have pointed out, the beneficiary of welfare payments to the oil, etc. industries.

    BTW, I think it bears pointing out that having "independent nation states that look after their own interests" is a VERY GOOD THING. Yes, it creates the potential for war, but the alternative creates the inevitability of the monolithic dictatorship that none can oppose.

    IBM mainframes had disc packs that you sort of unscrewed with this cake cover looking thing and removed from the drive probably back in the 60s. (I first saw one in the early 70s.) The cake cover was to protect the discs when you removed them from the drive, and so that you didn't touch them with your greasy fingers whilst picking them up.

And no, stupid, the EU is not falling apart financially because of ideas about what things government should provide out of tax revenues. The EU is falling apart financially because of large scale monetary manipulation that we in the US happen to benefit from, although our benefit is the last thing that the players care about.

    Socialist and fascist policies have nothing to do with the malaise in Europe. You have been suckered. There is a hidden war going on at all times for the control of monetary systems. So far the strategy has been to use the power of the US economy to make the dollar superior, not because the players give a fuck about the citizens of the US - they don't!, but because the nature of US politics makes it easier for them to control the rest of the world from a position of control of the dollar and of the dollar as the reserve currency. You are not supposed to know any of this...

    People who deride lawyers and our legal system are idiots who are ignorant of history. Throughout most of the history of civilization justice was dispensed by fiat. The adversarial system, while not perfect is much better than that. Our political system could use a major overhaul, but our legal system is pretty damn good - don't conflate the two.

    What you fail to realize is that there are two ways of making the supply/demand equation balance: increasing supply, and reducing demand. Long before fossil fuels become sufficiently expensive that alternatives are cost competitive, demand will first be reduced by reducing population. Hope you don't get "reduced".

    In regard to AGW, so what is the answer? The only viable strategy for this nation that I can see would be to cover the nation with breeder reactors to be built and operated by a new branch of the federal government, and with a good percentage of the labor to be supplied by draft age young adults. Then we could reduce the cost of electricity to nearly 0, and that would spur the adoption of electricity based transportation and heating infrastructure to replace our petroleum and coal based infrastructure. Have you got a better idea?

    The other problem here is that you are an anti-conspiracy kook: All conspiracy theories are automatically false because they are conspiracy theories seems to be your religion. Lots of what 9/11 "truthers" say is nonsense, but no one has ever put forth a plausible explanation for what happened to Building 7. We do not know the truth about 9/11.
