I guess one of the point of being a game developer is to make money out of it. If you are doing it for fun, then sure, you can spend 3 years on your pet project. If you are planning to make money, how do you eat for 3 years?
I think you misunderstood the article. They are not talking of removing the reply-all button entirely. They are mainly talking about putting a security to make sure people don't reply to everybody without realizing it. In other word, they want to make reply all more difficult than reply. It is the office equivalent of --i-understand-that-glxgears-is-not-a-benchmarking-tool
Super high tech devices used to see some useless details that explain the origin of a common biological phenomenon. That seems to be a reasonnable "news for nerds".
Well, somewhat the performance of the system does matter. Many game never got ported to the Wii from the xbox360 or the ps3 because the wii did not have enough power to support the game without a significant redesign of the engine and arts.
well there is a balance, with a complex archiecture you can obtain more peak performance for the same cost of manufacturing. But you increase the cost of designing the hardware.
Also a complex architecture means that reaching the peak performance will be more difficult for the programmers.
So with a simpler architecture (such as what appears to be in the wiiU), you have a lower peak performance, but reaching it is much easier. And in practice the amount of performance you typically get from a simpler system might be higher that what you might be able to achieve from a complex one.
I live in the US but I am not a citizen so I tend to somewhat follow US politics but not very closely. This is one of the first times where it seems a republican actually thought about his claim. I haven't finished reading it yet. But what he says seems reasonnable!
Though, at the back of my mind a voice says: "there must be an evil agenda somewhere!"
"Prison sentences for rape are not uniform. A study made by the U.S. Department of Justice of prison releases in 1992, involving about 80 percent of the prison population, found that the average sentence for convicted rapists was 11.8 years, while the actual time served was 5.4 years. This follows the typical pattern for violent crimes in the US, where those convicted typically serve no more than half of their sentence.[11]"

I find these initiave really good. We definitely NEED more online material. That being said, I aggree with you, there is still room for classrooms.
You mention motivation, but it is not only about motivation. Some topics are easy for some people but difficult for others. If you have "natural abilities" in a topic, a book or online material might be enough. But if you don't get it, reading the same book will not help, you need somebody to explain it. He will see what you do not understand and can explain it in different ways.
The thing with a professionnal teacher is that he knows what teaching techniques usually work, but he also knows the one that works for some kind of people. I don't think you can capture this expertise in online material.
Not sure how it works in the US. But in Europe a typical valid answer is "if management did not treat the workers like shit, they would not be unionized."
I think the question of whether you want to work for the money or you want to work for having a day-time occupation is important.
If you are in for the money, I am sure there are plenty of opportunities in the consulting/freelance side that you can follow.
If you are in for the occupation, there are plenty of places where you can do something interesting in an open source project, in an association or in a university. Universities are full of interesting software project that never get maintained or made production ready because a full time skilled engineer is too expensive. I am sure you can get some money out of it and work on fun problems.
to avoid things like: "You know, when you come back from the ballot, you should have voted for my friend. Because, you know, I know where you live and I know where your kids go to school. So be a nice boy, when you come back from the electino, bring me back your slip."
Indeed, nobody cares:) It appears clear to me that the term was used here and there to mean multiple things. You came and put an official definition stamped by people that matters (OSI and FSF).
The industry have been trying to redefine it as "code is available for reading purposes" which pushed Stallman to emphasize that availability is not enough and which he calls FLOSS.
Assuming 6Gbps and assuming you never stop writing, you crash the disk in one month. It is indeed pretty low. Most SSDs would last a couple years at full write speed.
Of course, that's not what Linaro is about. They are looking forward to stop the explosion of code and architecture within the ARM familly. No two ARM machine boots the same. No two ARM processors expose component the same way. You did not read Linus saying "what about stoping the ARM crap?"
What a nightmare you are describing. Having a single device for everything is DUMB. It is the worth thing you can do. If you lose one, you lose all. If one is compromised, all is compromised. If one stop working, all stop working.
What if your phone breaks ? My GF phone stopped working for no reason last week, it just went dead. In your dream, you can not drive home. You can not call somebody to help. You can not pay a cab. And even if you manage to walk home, you can not open the door.
If you google account is compromised, you can no longer pay anything. If one of my credit card is compromised, I still can pay with an other one.
"No downside unless you find having a complete record of where you shopped disturbing. A record that can be hauled into court, or at the very least used to target you for mind-control, i.e., advertising."
I must say I do find it somewhat disturbing. But what are the other options? Carrying two hundred dollars on me at any time. That's a call for being robbed. So I guess I could not pay expensive thing cash, but just small things. Then what is the point?
My record can be used in court. Please do, it is more likely to save me than to convict me.
Advertising? I'd be really interested in seeing how they can meaningfully advertise based on my name only. By mail? I throw spam away as soon as I identify it. By email with my statement? I read emails with no pictures. Google is certainly more efficient at targetting me in advertisement than banks will ever be (Despite I try to take all steps toward keeping a low internet footprint).
"Sure, knowing that you bought gas or coffee is probably not that interesting to anyone. But never buy anything interesting with a card if you can use cash."
But things that are "interesting" are likely to be expensive. And I'd rather not carry so much cash with me.
I frequently drive a mini cooper and a VW Jetta. The MPG is fairly accurate between the constructor and what I actually get (number of miles travelled divided by what the pump tell me I need to fuel it). The difference is less than 2mpg.
What appears to make a huge difference is: AC or heating and when there is snow on the road, keeping the engine idle or the window opened.

In most universities the department is actually called "computer science and engineering".
Seems reasonnable. 640K years seems enough for everybody.

Actually Super Computing is next week. So the ranking will be available probably on monday!

most likely not. the implementation of the cuda protocol is most likely not kernel dependant.

I still feel like it is important to know for me. It gives an idea of the current shape of the market: "sharp is being eaten".
