I think it is more that it would be such a waste not to make both project compatible at least from the driver point of view that it drives some people crazy (let's forget the but-it-is-not-fair-not-to-backport-THATS-SO-UNFAIR kind of guys) since it would pool a lot of (tedious) work.

Unfortunately, few people think like me...am I just nuts?

Well, I guess it depends how you count. 90% of the PC market certainly not. 90% of the laptop market seems a little bit too much. But 90% of the netbook definitively seems reasonnable. If each teenager get one of those because they are cheap, the arm netbook will be arm or nothing.

After that point, the question will be, will arm conquer the desktop market. I don't think it will be done in the next 3 years.

well, It does not work that easily for DES. Since all the cleverness of the algorithm lies in how the bit of the key are used in the feistel cipher.

However, the Triple-DES algorithm uses 3 DES calss to generate a cipher of 112 bit (equivalent security). TDES (k1,k2,k3, msg) is DES_encrypt(k1,DES_decrypt(k2,(DES_encrypt(k3,msg))).
