    I also think that the display is the main cost. But the network interface are not that cheap as well. And I think the main cost of the kindle may be the 3G internet access.

    The conference proceedings are not online yet. So I am not sure. I could not even find the title of the talk on the conference web page

    I know people who are at SIAM PP and they are all : "why are they talking about PP on slashdot ?". There was no major anouncement. I'll check the proceedings again next week, but I believe there is no major improvement. IBM is probably just trying to get some more light.

    We can find the following IBM talks in yesterday page :

    but not to display a higher resolution, but to display more information. For instance, I would definitively love to play starcraft with several view point on multiple screens. Or display detailled city/empire statistic on a secondary screen in civilization. Or a tactical RPG display character statistics (as in FireEmblem DS). Having game that allow you to do this kind of things would really be AWESOME to me.

    For the record, the ESSID of my network is ParasiteNet and is always open (in the honor of C. Doctorow). My neighboor love it. They just receive DHCPNAKs when they start consuming too much bandwidth...

    If you were building a house today, which kind of connectivity would you set up ?

    Since the expensive part is probably paying someone to put the cable, it could make sense to set up both gigabit ethernet and optical fiber in all rooms. Do any slashdotters have some opinion on that ?

    As an alien living in this US, I find this SSN situation ridiculous. Everybody is going to say that you should not give your SSN to ANYBODY. Yet everybody is asking for it...

    It seems to me that people are schizophrenic about SSN number. Is it a public unique identifier of a tax payer or a secret information ?

    Ah, the French. They are always very 'proud' of their cyclists. So prideful that they actually will destroy somebody's career in order to have a 'frenchman' win or at the top.

    For the record. I'm french and I don't care about cyclists which I think is the most stupid professional sport ever, save curling.

    I have been using my Nokia N810 to read ebooks recently. It does not have the all the pros of a dedicated e-book reader like non bright readable screen and long battery but it is enough for the occasional (non-drm encumbered) e books I read. If I was reading more on ebook I would probably go for a dedicated device. However none of them really caught my eyes...

    I use xournal to keep "personal explanation" or ideas on the document. I write a sumup of what is important in the bibtex file. Typically, what I would write in a "related works" section of an article. I also use a keyword field in my bibtex that I write mannualy as well. It allows me to search my whole bibtex file using bibtool.

    I use a git repository containing a bibtex file that tells me where the documents are with an annote field containing information. documents are put in the git repository. If I need to annotate them on the paper for not forgeting something about it, I use xournal. And I push everything in the git repository.

    It implies that people update the repository which is in my opinion not really a problem.

    If the LHC was designed properly, run the friggin' thing. If not, fix the friggin' thing.

    Did you RTFA? That's exactly what they're doing. It takes time to come up with a proper fix, but while you're coming up with something, why not use the thing? Even at a fraction of its energy, the LHC is the most advanced accelerator in the world. It would be a shame to just let it sit there.

    Without even counting that running it will stress some other hardware and uncover some other potential problems.
