As you would say, you don't HAVE to read my signature. You're just looking at it and complaining! Besides, it's my comment, and you aren't paying for it. Anyway, you can always choose to strip sigs in your preferences, like I do.
Sure, but recently, they've been posting pages and pages of shit! When anybody complains, they're moderated down. The trolls are fighting back by making it impossible to moderate effecively.
Why not try fighing back in an effective and mature way? For example, MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN SITE. I agree there are problems on this site and they aren't getting fixed. Is Portman's Clit going to help? I'm going to have to go with "No" on that one.
Why don't you trolls do something Good(TM) for a change and make your own news for nerds site? Done correctly, it could really put some competition out there for these guys and then we could have two good sites (kind of the same way Linux has KDE and GNOME)
It's just one of Cmdr Taco's bootlickers, trying to stifle earnest discussion about what's being posted on/. thest days!
Piss off. I've got problems with this site also, but IT'S NOT MY SITE. So I don't go whining everytime something stupid is posted. I just skip it (try it, it's fun and easy) Look, I think/. could be MUCH better, but I lack the time/resources to do that.
You know if all you "outraged" trolls put your resources together and actually made a kick ass news site to comptete with slashdot, I'd have a whole new respect for you. However all I see is a bunch of whiners who try to make things worse.
CmdrTaco/ Hemos: Stop posting tis boring garbage you call "news."
Here is a concept: Maybe it's their site, and they can post what they want. The constant flood of newbies in here who not only feel the need to view stories they have no interest in, but post complaints as well, is really annoying. It's really simple folks, when you create a site, you can post any story you want, when you are visiting someone else's site, they may have some stuff that doesn't interest you. With me so far? Didn't think so.
I'll make it simple for all of you, if it doesn't interest you, don't read it. I know the first impulse is to click on the link and then get offended like someone MADE you read it, but resist this urge. Just walk away. If there is nothing here that interests you, maybe you should check out ZDNet. Go tell them how to run their site.
I second everything you said. The IP tracing is what I've been saying all along. It would raise some eyebrows if an ISP began getting complaints from a large site like this about whoever was allocated xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx at xx:xxPM. I'd like to see the IP's posted with the message on posts like this (not automatically, by one of./'s admins) so we could all voice our complaints to the the abuse@isp.net of the poster.
Of course, another obvious answer would be to implement a "cancel post" feature accessible to a few super-moderators that would effectively "kill" a post by setting its score to -2 or -infinity. That's an awful lot of power, though, and I think it would sit horribly with the Slashdot community at large.
I'd support that. Perhaps the stipulation is that there is a page where you could go to see these rejected posts, and the person who rejected them is listed also. This way, we could make sure that no legit posts are being "trashed".
Yeah, but on the rare occations you need to be anon, you can create an account. This minor inconvience will stop most of the first post kiddies. But the big ones who are flooding need some more drastic measures. I seriously think IP posting would not be a bad idea in just this case. Let us know who those fscker's ISP's are.
Probably will happen, and I can see your point about a monopoly. But NSI being the most inept company I've dealt with in my few years, I do NOT want to see them as the monopoly. This case was entirly their fault, and would have likely happen with or without competing registrars.
Your points are all valid until you consider he paid $4,000 for this domain. A stupid move on his part, but still something to be pissed about. NSI IS at fault and they should be held liable for their gross incompetence.
A good point, but it's still easily avoidable. My understanding is that NSI for some boneheaded, dot com reason put races.com on the "available" list. This should never have been done. Even if it was purchased through NSI, instead of register.com, I'd bet NSI would balk at the idea of going to a customer who (so they thought) legally bought a domain name and say "oops, that wasn't available, can we have it back?"
Hey, greatdomains.com picked up a domain name legally. As much as I think squatters are scum rated just higher than the AC who likes to turn girls to stone and do horrible things to Portman, they shouldn't have been able to purchase the domain name in the first place. That's the dot com people's fault.
Looks like the student involved learned the most importent lesson at the end. "If I have to register another domain, I'll be sure to use a competing registrar."
Lesson learned. Never use NSI, that company has to be one of the biggest cluster fscks on the Net. With as much money as they pull in per domain, you would think they could afford to mount an operation a little more efficient than your average fly by night company.
Nearly everyone who has dealt with them probably has some horror stories about lost submissions, unreturned phone calls, unanswered e-mail, and a "sucks to be you" customer service policy.
If you are using them and you are banking on fast turnaround, or even competent service, well, sucks to be you:)
I hope some of the other new registrars can pick up the slack on this and provide some good service.
Agreed, this is way out of control. I keep bouncing between wanting to do away with AC's and seeing the need. However, I'm not so sure the need is there anymore. Especially with the goober who keeps blathering on about Portman and turning people to stone. I'm yearning for the days when an occational MEEPT and first post were the only problems.
People who are using/. just to annoy and disrupt need to have their IP's rejected or something. How do you guys think this looks to the rest of the world when they check out/. to see what is happening in the open source/geek community.
At least post the IP of this loser, so we can inform his ISP or something.
Probably not. The reason youth crime is rising is because of the lack of parent's responsiblity. Lock your f*cking gun cabinents. Keep your gun and ammo apart. If you see your kids making pipe bombs, stop them. If you see your kids playing a game you don't like, stop them. If you see your kids downloading hardcore porn, stop them. Talk to them. Geez, I thought it was obvious.
Wow, you just found the solution and you didn't even have to write a book or go on a talk show!
Seriously, you are right, but no one is going to buy it. It's much easier to allow the internet to raise your kids, then act suprised when it does a poor job. That way, the blame is always somewhere else, somewhere we can point the blame and rally against. But not ourselves, heavens no.
And this whole thing about these games training you in some way. Those who actually ARE trained for combat must be laughing their asses off. Games are not ANYTHING like it.

I'd probably find this somewhat offensive if it wasn't so darn funny.:)
I think it would be useful for such a system to warn a security guard reading/. that someone is walking around my car, perhaps ducking behind it to not be seen. This way the security guard pays attention to the security camera showing the perpetrator breaking into my car and starting to drive away. This way, since the guard is paying attention, he can call the police who can stop the car on the way out of the garage. The thief is arrested, my car is recovered, I'm happy.
