  5. Different outlook on Are MP3 Web Sites Unfair to Indie Artists? · · Score: 4

I guess I have a different take on all this. I've uploaded some of my bands songs to mp3.com and I've been happy. No, I haven't made any money to speak of, but that wasn't my intent.
I figured I do so my friends can download some songs and maybe some new people will here them. I never looked at mp3.com as a way to make a living.

90% of what is on mp3.com is crap anyway (my stuff probably falls into that, but hey, it's for fun). Lots of it is just dance mixes and synth tunes that some kid programmed into a shareware MIDI sequencer. You really have to search for the gems, the actual bands that put together some good songs.

Bottom line, if people are encoding mp3's with the hope of "going big time" it's probably not going to happen. Despite the hype, mp3.com (and others) are just places to to put music so people can find them, they are NOT a record label.
If they didn't pay out AT ALL, I'm sure that people would still be uploading songs.

Like open source coding, most of us are just doing it for fun and to see what we can do, not money.

Why are you acting like the US is a place where the government is out to protect the citizens. Government agencies believe to the core that they know better than us. That's why they take our money and spend it better than we would, take our children and send them off to die someplace that hates us, take our guns since we can't be trusted with them, and take out privacy because who knows what damage we might be planning behind closed doors.

Our system of government once worked, and worked pretty good. But like all governments eventually do, it became corrupted and ceased to work for the people, it now works for itself.

Our rights have pretty much become non existant. What were once considered unalienable rights that could not be taken away are now dangerous to the public (or to the government), and must be regulated, or removed. We won't miss them, we'll be given promises of safety in return.

Maybe someday there will be another Declaration of Independance. Perhaps even a Revloutionary war where people who still want live free from oppression and fear might fight for their beliefs.

Nope, not in this age. We'll just express outrage today then vote the same people into office because they belong to the party that once held the ideals we believed in.

You made some good points, but this one bothers me. Why not just adhere to the industry standards you mentioned above? No supporting specific browsers, just working within the guidelines of the established standards. W3C HTML 4.0 code works in both browsers. If you need database access (I'm assuming you do for an intranet) PHP3 works on all browsers.

Don't get me wrong, I agree in principle with what you said, but the WTO is just going to be another big government.
As for evidence, simply look at the stated goals of the World Bank, UN, WTO, etc. Seperate, national governments making independent decisions is just not part of their stated plans.

I have mixed feelings about the free market, especially in terms of labor. It seems the third world countries will be exploited as much as helped. Sweatshops will take jobs away from devloped countries and be used to enslave 3rd world countries to work for big corporations.

No, it's not. We do "donate" more of our resources than ANY other UN country. Who makes up a massive percentage of every "peacekeeping" force?

As for the dues, that is all bullshit. We were owed many times more than our UN dues by many other countries, debts that we chose to let go. (It seems our leaders are morons, who knew?)

You need to learn that there is a distinct difference between the US population and government. The government abuses the UN, bombs other countries, etc. The population (most that I know) say "Fuck the UN" stop bombing other countries every time Clinton needs to divert attention from a scandel, stop sending our kids to die trying to perserve peace in some backwoods country that considers burning out flag a national pasttime, and leave us the hell alone. We don't need yet another layer of ineffective government telling us we have too much freedom.
