Piwik has gotten some much-needed usability improvements in the past couple months. It is still very obviously beta software, but everything is working much better. I've been using Piwik since last October or so after trying Google Analytics, Statcounter, and Open Web Analytics. They also have Wordpress and MediaWiki plugins so you don't have to go around editing templates. I'm really impressed with how much they've improved lately.
I'll probably be modded down for this for not thinking with the hive, but here goes...
I find it hilarious that everybody is making such a big deal about Ubuntu finally not being laggy and clumsy and calling it "as slick as Windows". I haven't seen any screenshots or videos of 9.04, but a few minor menu improvements, and a much-needed fixing of its lagginess isn't something that should be regarded as "as slick as Windows and Mac", because the interface is still butt ugly.
I used Ubuntu for about a week and I just couldn't stand how laggy and ugly the interface was... and I honestly don't know why people use it, other than because it's trying to be Windows (easy and not like Linux at all). And before you mod me troll for speaking against Linux, please recognize that I dual-boot Windows 7 and Gentoo w/ Xfce, and I use them both on a regular basis for various purposes. Installing Gentoo wasn't as daunting as people told me constantly, and it's the only distro I've really ever used... It took me about an hour to get it installed, and another hour to emerge and configure X/Xfce, and I honestly don't understand why people choose the not-at-all-Linuxy-except-for-its-nearly-complete-terminal Ubuntu over the almost-as-easy-to-use-as-Ubuntu-except-without-the-painful-maclike-simplicity-that-surrounds-it Gentoo.
The FAA has absolute authority over all domestic airspace. Period. Special-Use Areas are only designated for the awareness of civilian pilots... so they know they may be flying in the presence of military jets and to avoid the area if possible. Special-Use Areas are also often subject to advisory times where there will be excessive activity, or dangerous training procedures that require a buffer zone, during which the FAA (not the Navy) will close the airspace to non-emergency civilian aircraft.
Now, that's not all to say that the FAA use their absolute authority to be dicks to the military. The Navy still pretty much gets to do what they want in their SUAs and MOAs, and the FAA will still probably release a NOTAM about a model rocket launch and whatnot if the Navy tells them to..... but if the FAA wanted to be dicks and disallow it, they very well could.
You realize these lawyers no longer support the RIAA, right? They have a new client.
This argument (which I've seen many times in this thread) would have merit if there were only one... maybe two... MAFIAA lawyers in Obama's cabinet. But no. He's picked FIVE so far. How do you not understand what's going on here? Do you think that this is not in the slightest bit even a little suspicious?
This modern-day Stonehenge will be scavenged for parts and resources long before 10,000 years. Much like how the original Stonehenge was.
Parts and resources? I bet people are more likely to scavenge it for a clock... I think it'd be pretty cool to have a 10,000-year clock in my backyard.
It doesn't matter, really. The maximum length specified for cat5, cat5e, or even cat6 cable is only 100 meters. Beyond that, you'd need to add hubs to connect the lengths.
Look who just passed their CCNA and feels the need to implicitly brag about it by completely ignoring the joke of the parent.
Who cares? Innovation is innovation. If a game developer doesn't wish to take the time to make sure their innovation is executed properly, don't buy the game... but other developers will be getting ideas from these half-assed innovations and they will be able to improve upon them and maybe make a halfway-enjoyable game. Innovation in any field is NEVER something to complain about... EVER.
A phone company's monopoly in a particular area is often unavoidable due to the cost of laying physical cables, a monopoly of skype is just completely ridiculous and inexcusable.
Who.
The fuck.
Cares?
Seriously... this whole phobia of monopolies that the majority of Slashdot seems to suffer from is getting old. I don't know if it's just the cool thing for kids to talk about these days or what... but just because a company is a monopoly, doesn't mean the company is bad. And on top of that, you folks seem to way over-simplify what it means to actually be a monopoly.
Take Skype, for instance. How the hell can you call Skype a monopoly? Have you ever once heard of AIM, Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, Google Voice, ICQ, Gizmo Project, etc, etc? All of them are instant messengers, most of them have free voice calling, most of them have free video calling, and a couple of them offer phone numbers and international calling... just like Skype. Skype is, in no way, a monopoly, and you need to remember that whenever you think about posting in a Slashdot thread.
But even if Skype WAS a monopoly (it isn't... really), who cares? Do they cause harm to their customers because of it? No. They actually have pretty much the best prices for international calling of all long distance phone providers... which is why they're so popular. Monopolies aren't bad because they're monopolies... monopolies are only bad when they use this 100%-market-share as leverage to get their consumers to spend all their money on these products/services that have become commonplace and almost required to live a normal life. As far as I can tell (taking the general Slashdot consensus out of consideration), the only monopoly currently in existance is Apple. Sorry fanboys, but just think about it. Apple's shit only works with Apple's shit. If you want to use OS X you have to own a Mac, if you want to use your iPhone you have to activate it through iTunes, if you want to put music on your iPod you have to use iTunes (if you want to follow Apple's EULA anyhow), if you want to use iTunes then you can only put music on an iPod. The list goes on and on. And how does Apple leverage this 100%-market-share on Apple products? They charge $3000 for a computer that I can buy from a different vendor for fucking $1200, just because it's made of brushed aluminum and has a picture of a fruit on the lid. (And now to the part that's gonna get me modded Troll.... wait for it....) Does Microsoft pull all this shit? No. They aren't a monopoly. I'm really sorry Slashdot, but Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly on the PC, partly because consumer-level Linux is in the same market, partly because Apple is in their own sub-market within this market, if you will. Microsoft isn't making deals with hardware manufacturers that make it so their OS only works with specific computers. Sure, they're a huge corporation, that produces the most popular OS in the world... but are they the only company that produces operating systems? No. Are they intentionally hurting the consumer for their own gain? They aren't. (there, have at it mods)
Seriously though, is there a business conference that happens annually now where presenters try to sell the audience on the benefits of alienating your customers by providing sub-par purchasing and product use options? Do they start the whole thing off with a keynote on how to use copyright to extort and sue your customers?
No, there isn't a conference, but the RIAA School of Business offers an entire course on the subject. In fact, you must take this course in order to get any degree there.
If the power goes out as a result of a natural disaster, then I'm sure 911 is already aware of the situation. If the power goes out as a result of a burglar/murderer/whatever shutting it off, well, I'm sure the first thing he cuts will be the phone line anyway... so now what?
In the here-and-now world if you run Windows you're subjecting yourself to the monoculture that bred Conficker, Koobface, Torpig, Storm, Antivirus 2009, etc.
No, I'm not subjecting myself to this "monoculture" because I run antivirus that's worth a damn, and I don't go to dogchasingcat.reallyfunnyvideosandnotvirusesiswear.com and I don't download porn.exe from 4chan and try and run it.
Nope... I'd say anybody who is computer-savvy enough to actually use Linux, but still chooses to use Windows, are people computer-savvy enough to not become infected by the likes of Conficker. Therefore, your point is moot.
kudos to them for doing the right thing in this case
While I am happy that they are adopting this policy, and hope other ISPs do the same, I'm afraid that they're not doing it to spite the RIAA or do good by their customers. They're only doing it because they don't want to terminate a paying customer's service just because the RIAA tells them to. I'm not saying this policy has no benefit to the customer... because it most certainly does... but they don't deserve kudos for being right by the customer, because that's not what they're doing here.
You mean having 10x users would reduce the number of different configurations?
Precisely. And that's because the only way that Linux will EVER have that kind of market share is if it becomes a standardized very easy-to-use OS, supplied by all OEMs, that won't require any sort of customization to get it working whatsoever. Sure, each hardware vendor might have their own flavor, but they would still have mostly the same features and functionality. Seriously, the general public is too stupid to make proper use of Linux. I don't know why you people even try to force its adoption.
I'd like to see a worm tailored to my custom-compiled hardened 64bit gentoo.
If you would read, once more, the post that you quoted, you might notice that it says "If everyone were using something else, such as Linux or OS X." Allow me to define "everyone" for you.... "everyone" is a pronoun meaning "Every person; everybody." "Everyone" cannot custom-compile their own Linux kernel with security in mind. "Everyone" cannot even custom compile their own kernel, period.
The grandparent said that Linux and OS X are a poor choice for a botnet because they are in the extreme minority, but if one were to ever become the majority, black hats would write trojans for that OS. I can assure you that if Linux were to become the majority of the OS market, there would only be a small handful of different compile configs used for 99% of those computers (much like Windows)... none of which would be custom for specific hardware or have extreme security in mind.
for some reason, firefox likes to delete cookies...
Actually, Google just requires you to reauthenticate every couple of weeks. If you notice, when it asks you to login again, it will show your email address in static text and only ask for your password. It has nothing to do with cookie deletion or IP address changes.
Well it might be because the iPod has always had one of the worst amplifiers I have ever listened to... even when using studio headphones (as opposed to their factory earbuds that make their shitty amps sound even shittier)
You obviously don't understand that the only reason there aren't many viruses for Linux is because virus writers don't give a shit about Linux. They only put their time and effort into something that will achieve their goal with most ease, and since Windows has % of the market share.... that's the one they write viruses for.
I know you were being facetious, but that doesn't negate the fact that your statement is retarded. The moment everybody starts using Linux is the moment that people start putting Linux_Virus.jpg on 4chan and having retards run them with the promise of free porn. After all, that's the biggest method of malware distribution... not security vulnerabilities. You can have all the "security" in the world, but all of that will be moot when you have people who are misinformed/ignorant/dumbasses going to stupid sites and downloading all sorts of crap.
I wonder if it's been improved since then.
Piwik has gotten some much-needed usability improvements in the past couple months. It is still very obviously beta software, but everything is working much better. This is exactly why Tony Werner, Comcast chief technical officer
Did anybody else read the bolded part as "Time Warner, Comcast"?
The FAA has no authority over MILITARY AIR SPACE.

The Democrats at least pretend to care about the little people by throwing welfare and food stamps our way.
Umm.... wouldn't that make them more evil? Being just as evil as the GOP, but sneakier and less transparent about it?
How the hell did you relate that to Silverlight?
Didn't you get the memo? All analogies with an anti-Microsoft tone are relevant on Slashdot, no matter the context.
This modern-day Stonehenge will be scavenged for parts and resources long before 10,000 years. Much like how the original Stonehenge was.

Yes.
