  2. You may need to optimize it a bit on Looking at UltraSPARC III · · Score: 1

I had Sparcstation 5 (NOT Ultra 5) for 4 years. First, I've replaced a 100Mhz CPU with 170Mhz. Next I got some extra memory (164MB instead of 64). I got rid of CDE and installed FVWM instead. Finally I got a 3rd party graphic adapter ('frame buffer'), also very fast. All this made the performance quite acceptable. Now of course it is finally at the end of its life cycle (and I've moved to a different company anyway)

As far as OOP is concerned, that is a number of language far better than C++, by 'better' I mean more compact, consistent, and less confusing. Why bother with C++ then? I"ve been hearing 'because it inforces the programming's discipline whereas C doesn't. Give me a break. A lack of programming discipline is something you can't just inforce with a particular language, right to the contrary, a language such as C++ or Perl, both feature rich and both confusing as hell don't do anything toward better programming discipline. In short, C++ is abomination. A crime against nature.

  6. rather amazing experience with Chryzalids on The Chrysalids (aka Re-birth) · · Score: 2

I remember taking Chryzalids from the Public Library. Roughly at the same time I've picked up the CD 'Crown of Creation' from Jefferson Airplane. (heard it long time ago on LP, then was waiting for CD). I read Chryzalids for a while, then started listening Crown of Creation. To my amazement I've realized that the song 'Crown of Creation' actually used the words from Chryzalids. In Chryzalids: 'In loyality to their kind they cannot tolerate our mind, in loyality ot our kind we cannot tolerate their obstruction'. In Crown of Creation it is something very similar. Then again the same phrase: 'Life is change. That's how it differs from the rocks'. It happened 10 years ago. I still remember that. Coincidences like this can really blow your mind. To the best of my knowledge, noone every detected that Crown of Creation uses the words from Chryzalids. If you're not familiar with this CD, pick it up, this is probably the top of Jefferson Airplane and one of the best examples of psycodelic rock. (another example of Jefferson Airplance quoting classics is a song Rejoyce with quotes from Ulysses) Wyndham is the excellent writers. The day of Triffids is another novel worth reading. 'Cracatit (sp?) is another really good one.

  14. it is NOT an MP3 player on Sony Cigar-Sized MP3 Player · · Score: 2

Sony 'MP3 player' cannot play MP3 files in its native format. The only format Sony player understands is their proprietory ATRAC3. Software which comes with Sony player allows conversion from MP3to ATRAC3, however there were some postings claiming that after the conversion the quality of sound noticably degrades. In addition, SDMI is a real pain-in-the-butt feature. I would rather go with a player capable of playing MP3, no SDMI, and may be Liquid Audio (*.lqt) format as an option.

I don't care how well-intension this thing is. We should be free of censorship and the right to a free speech must be protected. To outlaw something we don't like is our instinctive reaction. It is easy to implement. It also doesn't solve anything. The fight against the racism cannot be done but outlowing the racism. It does require certain activites from those who want to fact. Unfortunately these are the racists who are more active on Internet than those who oppose them. Incidently I'm not a racist not because I am sort of tree-hugging liberal or whatever. I simply consider the evolution the fact (rather than something you have to *believe*), and that we all share the same common ancestors somewhere in Africa. From this perspective all races share the same genetic pool, the differences are on 'species' level. You certainly don't have to love another race, its culture, whatever. The serious error is to consider that other race *inferior* to the one you belong, which *is* what the racism holds. Cheers,
