Six years of Republican rule, and we still have gun control. If this is such an extreme left-wing issue, how come they haven't done something about it?
Were you in the US two years ago? The Clinton gun ban's sunset clause removed the largest gun control act of a generation.
In case you don't get what happened, let me sum it up.
In 1994, when the Clinton administration wanted to pass their gun ban, a congressional majority was not certain. As a compromise measure, they included a clause to make the law only last 10 years. Their thinking was that they'd have control of the congress and white house then so it would be little more than a rubber stamp to make the existing, but temporary, law permanent. Well, in the 1994 election gun rights voters were quite upset with the Democrats so they turned out in droves to vote against them. The Democrats lost the House and the Senate. In his 1995 State of The Union Address, Clinton even admitted that this loss was because of his gun ban.
Bush winning the 2000 election gave us two of the three branches of government. When the law was about to expire, President Bush (in a brilliant example of politicking) said that if congress passed the extension of the ban, he would sign it. President Bush KNEW that the ban had no chance. But saying that he'd sign it if passed took a huge campaign issue out of Kerry's pocket.
Perhaps if they learned that these cultural issues were really, truly important to many voters they could win votes, but noooo... instead, we hear the same mantra of, "stupid rednecks only care about x!" each election cycle.
Nail...Head...Hit...
Democrats like to pretend that cultural issues aren't important. They call them "wedge issues", because they think that repeating the mantra will make people forget about what's important to them. It hasn't and it won't.
The Democrats are correct about many fiscal issues, but the fact that they actively work against my beliefs and demean me and others like me who actually care about the second amendment or abortion has prevented me from ever being able to support them.
The Democrats alienate millions of potential voters on an almost daily basis, and then don't understand why those voters turn to the GOP or elsewhere.
It's nonsense to suggest that just because something happened in the past we should all simply accept the outcome and move on
It's ironic that you chose the phrase "move on", the Democrats used that very same phrase when we bitched about how the Democrats and their willing accomplices in the media duped the general public into believing that the Clinton impeachment was "just about sex". Hell, they even built a political movement around it. Perhaps they should follow their own advice.
So appearantly the majority prefers freedom over convenience? Well, at least it keeps my hopes up for humanity.
In this case, freedom IS the convienence. Some of the people that I know who own iPods also have other music players in their households. So why get music in a format that can only be played on one device when you can get it in a format that will work on all of them?
The Clarke band is 22,500 miles above the earth. For each outgoing packet, the data has to make the round trip of ~45,000 miles. Light travels at approximately 186,000 miles per second.
45,000/186,000 = 241.9(rouded)MS of latency for each outgoing packet. Under optimum conditions a ping will take 848.8 MS to return. Now that's just to their uplink center. Add in another 60 - 200 MS of latency for other servers. You're looking at upwards of one second, over 1,000 MS of latency for any game that you play. Obviously it is of no use for a "gamer". Unless you're playing internet chess, steer clear because you're going to get better response times from dialup.
and he wants to be able to be stupid when it comes to using the Internet without having to worry about viruses, spam, and all that.
And this will never happen. Even if "Trusted Computing" wins the day, Sony's rootkit fiasco proves that companies that are big enough to get their binaries signed are willing to fuck you over.
Without seing what's being said? You must look away from what's being said then, because no matter whether she's using MSN or AIM, you'll see her messages in clear in WireShark.
There are different levels of detail that are plainly visible. Some of them are collapsed by default. It takes only a single click of the mouse to read them, but unless I have a reason to, I don't.
My girlfriend has a 13 year old daughter. We debated endlessly about whether or not to allow her to have internet access in her bedroom. In the end what we decided to do was to let her with the admonition that as the network admin, I have the ability and the right to watch and dissect any traffic going across my network. We showed her that I can do it at my leisure. We also told her that we'd respect her privacy unless she gave us a reason not to.
What this comes down to is randomly sniffing traffic to see what websites she's visiting and who she's IMing with. As long as nothing appears to be out of sorts, we don't look any deeper into it. Using WireShark, and originally Ethereal, I can see who she's talking to without taking the extra step of seeing what's being said. Kids from school? No problem. Some unfamiliar name? We ask her about it and if we're satisfied with her answer the issue ends there. If we think something is up, we'll read the traffic.
I realize that for some parents it's impossible but we are geeks, there's no reason to let your children's mastery of technology surpass yours.
All of this time, I've been blaming Steve Jobs alone for fucking up the Macintosh line.
I see that I was wrong. In the span of time between 1999 and 2001 Macs went from a design that I'd describe as "Post-Industrial Elegance" to "See-Through Faggotry".
The G5 Macs continued to have that elegance, but the rest of Apple's line was so far away, that I haven't even looked back.
While the Democrats used to have very strong support with working class people (low income correlates with lower education), this has been decreasing, and is only kinda strong support now.
The Democrats have been losing support amongst the "working class" because of social issues.
The Democrats assumed that people only cared about their pockets. They assumed that people would look the other way when the Dems tried to enact social policy that they disagreed with as long as we thought that they were punishing the rich.
They found out, quite painfully over the past decade that this isn't the case. Between 1994 and 2000 the Democrats lost control of the House, Senate and White House, all because of social issues.
When I say social issues, I'm talking about abortion, welfare reform, gun control and "gay marriage". Although, not necessarily in that order.
If they had to document every type of microbe that could potentially be in the stuff you are consuming then you would need a book with every bottle of water to list it all....
How about just listing the ones that are intentionally added?
Expect some mild hysteria over this and some nuts demanding labelling.
You have to be a nut to want to know what additives are in your food?
Are vegans nuts if they want to know if enzymes from animal sources are added to their food? Are Jews or Muslims nuts because they want to know if pork products are added to their food? What about people who are allergic to peanuts, are they nuts to want to know when their foods are prepared with peanuts? How about people who are allergic to eggs? What about people who are lactose intolerant?
It's only reasonable for manufacturers to list the contents of the food products that they place on the market.
My first car was a 1986 Camaro. I soon discovered that the car was prone to overheating if it was moving slower than 25mph. I discovered the overheating problem when the radiator exploded. I replaced the radiator. Through much hunting (and with my girlfriend's dad's help) I discovered a broken solder trace on the relay board that controlled the fan. Less than a penny's worth of solder fixed it. But only after I blew a radiator and paid ~$350 to replace the heater core.
I was working for a graphic shop a while back and they bought a nubus PowerPC upgrade card. When card was inserted, the computer wouldn't boot. It took me some doing, but I found out that if I rearranged the cards that it would. The upgrade card had to be in the highest slot and the graphics card had to be in the last slot. The other card(s) could be anywhere else.

Unless you were in a coma from 1993-2001, you can't be talking about the Democrats.

As long as the watch is clearly marked as a "Rorex", it's perfectly genuine.
If the watch is a "Rorex" but has been relabeled as a "Rolex", then it's not genuine.

He's obviously referring to the old iMacs, but this being slashdot, perhaps he's referring to open source homosexuality?
The old iMacs, iBooks, B&W G3s & G4s.
Computers in colors like "Blueberry, Lime and Tangerine". It matters little that Apple has stopped that nonsense, I've already lost interest.
That's what I'm referring to.
