I like the fact that Slackware is a 'purist' distro, it's difficult to use and that forces you to learn more about the underlying OS. If you've used Slackware you'll know how to fix things in other flavors of linux when they break.
When linuxconf's config files get buggered, if you don't know how to manually configure things you're stuck. If you understand how to manually edit config files for the various other services you can make due until you fix linuxconf(or your administration tool of choice).
Really, the completr lack of package management and silly whizzy clicky admin tools makes Slackware a lllot easier to admin when you have 120 servers running it.
Maybe my sarcasm detector is broken, please tell me that you're joking.
having ourselves held hostage to oil companies wouldn't be a bad thing.
This is a political ideology, it has nothing to do with science.
I too agree that it's a bad idea to put all of our eggs in one basket. We need to pursue alternative energy methods. But it does damage to the credibility of a branch of science if scientists willingly allow themselves to become pawns in a political ploy.
Perhaps when the Conservative movement gets up the guts to tell the Evangelicals, including GWB, that being Conservative doesn't mean having to deny reality that doesn't fit with a Biblical interpretation which could best be described as simply idiotic.
You don't bite the hand that feeds you.
On the other hand, I've seen a number of liberals who buy into crystals, magnets, feng shui, chiropracty and all other sorts of nonsense
Have you every talked to someone with serious back or neck problems who visited a chiropractor?
Chiropractic medicine won't do anything for liver cancer, but it can relieve the pain of someone who was in a car accident.
Don't you think science education is best served by keeping psuedo-science and barely veiled religious dogma out of the classroom?
Does that apply to global warming alarmism too? I remember when the "climate change" alarmists were screaming about global cooling.
My problem was definately about a lack of lactase. I was not planning on going into the disgusting details, but perhaps it'll make my situation clearer.
Lactose has a very distinctive smell. When I couldn't digest milk, it would run straight through me and I'd have to get rid of all the undigested milk. The smell of the lactose was very much evident.
I was not producing lactase. If I took a lactase pill or drank lactose free milk I had no problems.
Eventually I got to the point where I didn't need to do either of those things anymore.
If you force things upon people they'll adapt quickly, but if you give them too many options it could take years to get them moved over to something different.
In a corporate setting where the owner or the person properly appointed by the collective will of the owners(shareholders) it's perfectly fine to force things on employees.
This is a city in Germany. After the previous century, I would suspect that the German people are going to be quite resistant to the idea of having anything forced on them.
They Republicans don't have 60 seats in the senate. That's what is required to acomplish anything. The Dems can Filibuster if the Republicans have less than 60 seats.
On MTV Cribs, you'll have the new flavor of the month in either rap or rock-rap-ska fusion saying "Yeah, everyone's got TVs in the headrests of their cars; but I have TVs in my magazines!"
I bought multiple copies of Half Life so that I could kick the hell out of my GF's kids both on LAN and online. When valve killed WON, it was a minor inconvienence because we could still play CS 1.5 on the lan, but CS 1.6 requires Steam and It pisses me off to no end.
When I found out that Steam would be required for HL2, even for single player I decided to not buy it,(just for good measure) EVER.
No one is disputing that Valve can do whatever they want with their software and because of their decision I have decided not to buy it.
That's 3 copies that they didn't sell to me alone.
For those of you who never say Chasing Amy, when Hooper X made the following speech about Star Wars, it struck me deeply. Because some of it(take out the epithets) is exactly how I felt about the original trilogy.
"It's always some white boy got to invoke the holy trinity. Bust this! Those movies are about how the white man keeps the brother-man down--even in a galaxy far far away. Check this shit. You got cracker farmboy Luke Skywalker, Nazi poster boy blond hair blue eyes. Then you got Darth Vader, blackest brother in the galaxy. Nubian god!
Now. Vader, he's a spiritual brother, down with the force and all that good shit. Then this cracker Skywalker gets his hands on a lightsaber, and the boy decides HE'S gonna run the whole fucking universe! Gets a whole KLAN of whites together and they go bust up Vader's hood, the Death Star! Now what the fuck do you call that?
Gentrification!! They gonna drive out the black element to make the galaxy quote-unquote safe for white folks! In "Jedi," the most insulting installment when Vader's beautiful black visage is SULLIED when he pulls off his mask to reveal a feeble, crusty old white man! They trying to tell us that deep inside, we all wants to be WHITE!!!"
Abortion is an issue that is not necessarily religious. For example, the Catholic church's position is religious, but there are non-religious pro life arguments as well.
Either way, if it's acceptable for one side to demand a litmus test, then it's perfectly reasonable that the other side will as well.
Exactly...and if gas was more expensive to begin with you would have been more efficient with your land use.
What the fuck is wrong with you? In the 1700s there was no petroleum and no internal combustion engines, but we were still spread the hell out all over this country.
So who pays for roads, traffic police, pollution control, and other traffic-related costs in your country then, if it's not coming from fuel tax?
Roads are paid for with a combination of taxes, states get the money for roads from fuel taxes, income taxes and registration fees for automobiles. The federal government dispurses highway funds to states that are collected via the federal income tax.
Police are paid for by the municipality in which they operate. Pollution controls are paid for by the motorists.
Heck, who pays for the stabilisation of the oil-producing middle-east countries
The Americans do. In terms of money and lives.
Does the government just assume that everyone is interested in funding that? Do they take taxes from cyclists and pedestrians to pay for the steady supply of oil?
Anyone who tarkes part in society benefits from petroleum. They buy good that are shipped via oil powered ships and trucks. Synthetic fabric for their clothes is made from oil. Why should those people not pay their fair share too?
Difference is that here we have one country that is much bigger than all of western europe. Many of you can drive completely through an entire country on less than one tank of fuel. We can barely drive through one state on that much fuel.
High fuel prices in europe are less of a disadvantage than they are in the US.
Personally i'd like to see the price of fuel in the states double from it's current level
Al Gore could have really used a few thousand people like you in Florida.
You think you don't like the US now? If we started paying $6.48 per gallon for gasoline, we'd be invading people all over the globe. Petroleum, Natural gas, hell even soybean and canola oil would be enough of a justification for sending a couple of divisions of mechanized infantry.
Trust me, you REALLY want gasoline prices in the US to go down. It'll be quite bad for everyone if they don't.
I don't think that anyone is opposed to saving a mother's life.
The problem is that as it stands right now the "health" of the mother is the protected concern. That includes the "mental health", so that if a woman claims that having the child will cause too much stress for her, her mental health is in danger and she circumvents and restrictions.

Dell, the name Osama Bin Laden swears by.
When you buy Dell, it makes the baby Jesus cry. You don't want to make the baby Jesus cry, do you?
Hey Dell, we just fucked your girlfriend.

I both lost and regained the ability to digest milk as an adult.
When I was 25 I went for about 4 months withough ingesting any milk products. When I tried again, I couldn't digest them.
When I was 29 I began to occasionally consume milk products and after a few months I was able to digest it again.
I had no idea that there was anything genetic about the production of the lactase enzyme into adulthood.

WoW seems to have taken the lion's share of the gamers who are willing to pay a monthly fee to keep playing.
Gamers like myself will NOT pay money to keep playing something that we've already bought.
Hell, I'm not mad at Blizzard. It's cool that they've made such a great game. I just will never play it.
Hopefully this lights a fire under the collective ass of the rest of the game development world to get some more competitors into the market.

I don't sell sick stuff like Marilyn Manson or cop-killer rap, and I'm proud to have one of the most extensive Christian rock sections that I know of.
Cop Killer was speed metal, not rap. Maybe you're facing bankruptcy because you don't know much about the audience to which you're aspiring.

The differene is that Divx didn't add anything. There was NO BENEFIT of Divx over DVD. Blu-Ray doesn't suffer from that same problem.
