Women are what stops most of us from doing the kind of stupid shit that tends to get us killed.
If I didn't have a woman in my life, I'd probably east fast food 6 days per week. I'd probably drink more alcohol. I would still do dumb shit with my friends, like when we used to take 12 gauge shotguns out into the woods and shoot tree stumps.
These few factors alone have increased my life expectancy by at least a decade.
It's more like the sports model, where Shaq and Tiger make more money from Reebok and Buick than they do from their team/winnings.
Tiger doesn't spend any of the money he makes from Buik, Nike, or any of his other endorsement contracts. Every dollar of it is invested and saved for his retirement. He says that it is his way of keeping himself "hungry". 12 million dollars per year is a huge incentive to get complacent.
Perhaps he means that it is a first to get such high profile (which admittedly isn't very high at all) coverage. Since the 1970s our mass media have put forth the image that ALL terrorism is committed by arabs against Israelis and Americans.
Perhaps the US could do more to help promote peace. Perhaps the Palestinians could do more to stop killing children and civilians in restaurants and buses. There's lots of blame to go around. But now we've found a new person to blame: YOU, for not getting your fucking facts straight before you mouth of.
You are 100% correct, no one is blameless in the middle east conflict. Israel refuses to take part in good faith negotiations, the Palestinians refuse to deal with the violent extremists in their midst, and the US obviously favors one side over the other.
Arafat and Sharon have killed innocent civillians and that makes it harder for the other side to take them seriously. Until all sides admit that they have done wrong, and negotiate in good faith, the cycle of violence will continue.
Reiterate: You have to upgrade the powersupply when you upgrade the CPU a generation, and you have to upgrade the motherboard when you upgrade the CPU a generation. If you only stick within a generation, then you don't have to. Oh, and ram too.
I used the same 235 watt powersupple from my PII 300 through my Duron 700.
Why is it a game only played on the PC? The game is only playable because you can change the motherboard, power supply, and case?
It is only playable on the PC because it is the platform where you have choices about what to upgrade to. On the Mac, you'll upgrade to a PPC, a PPC or a PPC.
So essentially you're willing to play the piecemeal upgrade game on the PC, but not the Mac?
Almost. It is a 'game' that can only be played with the PC.
Differences include the fact that you can't buy any old case or power supply, unlike a PC, and are stuck with the motherboard that comes with said case and powersupply,
Exactly! If they chose to, Apple could make machines that conformed to industry specs, like ATX but they choose not to. Can you imagine the market if someone was able to make custom cases that you can migrate any Mac to? I used to be a Mac user, I know mow much they love to customize their machines.
I said nothing about children, nor did the parent post to mine.
Pethaps you did not, but those who are always trying to protect us from both graphic violence and graphic sexuality always invoke the sake of "the children". As it relates to children, they're right. The problem is that they attempt to control adults in the name of protecting children.
When you went from a P200MMX to P2/300 you needed a new mobo. So why did you then go to a K6-2, which required yet another new mobo? Why not replace that P2/300 with a P3/500 and keep the same board?
Fair question. I'll explain, I was an early adopter of the PII, I had an FX chipset MB. I couldn't go beyong a PII 350 and I had no AGP slot. I had to get a new MB to upgrade. The P3 was not available at the time, and the price of the K62/MB combo was right.
Also, are you seriously running your Athlon XP 1800+ with the same powersupply and case airflow as the Pentium 100?
No, I've gone through several cases. But I until this time last year, I had my linux box running a 700 Mhz Duron in the same case with the same 235 watt power supply that supported my PII 300.
How many times have you upgraded your hard disk? Your optical drives? Don't get me wrong, I like futzing around with my PCs too... but I also love my G4. You're comparing apples to drywall.
Let's see... HDs 1.2 GB to 2.4, 3.2, 10, 20, 40, and now 80 GB. My 10x cd and 6x changer have been replaced with a 16x DVD and Plextor burner.
But my BMW 528i still has its original six cylinder engine after several years dispite my desire for a V8. I guess I should blame BMW for not using more standard parts, I could have slowly upgraded it like some of my buddies do with their japanese imports.
In a business, you'd be right. That is not the case with schools.
The Macs will cost less because of the lower IT staffing requirements.
Schools don't really have the luxury of being able to float bonds like businesses (or even municipalities), It is far more feasible for a school to budget more money for an IT staff each year than it is to get more money up front.
Unfortunately, that's the same reason many school IT administrators will go with Windows. Less staff = a smaller fiefdom for the managers.
It's far more complicated than that. Colleges tend to have Windows-centric programs, so when the IT managers enter the workforce, they are more experienced with Windows. Also, Windows runs more of the programs that the users they support will want. IT managers also favor windows for a reason that is not as true anymore, parts availability. Though it's not like it used to be, the time was that you couldn't get parts as readily for Macs. When the rest of the computing world was using IDE, Apple was still gung ho SCSI. Apple Switched to DIMMS back when the rest of the world was still using 72 pin SIMMs. Old lessons die hard.
Not to mention, a new eMac with Panther will cost you about $800. If you can't afford $1000 every 5-8 YEARS perhaps you shouldn't be looking at Apples in the first place.
I can afford such upgrades far more often, but I am not interested in doing so.
The PC that I'm using now is the evolution of the Pentium 100 that I built 7 years ago. When I was ready for a new CPU/MB, they fit into the sustem that I had. When I was ready for more, I added more. Over time that P100 became a P200MMX then a P2 300, then a K62450 and now an Athlon XP 1800+.
The Mac that I bought 6 months after I built this PC is still at 200Mhz, I could have added a G3 to the L2 cache slot, but why cobble together something that just barely works?
Parent may not have found the best way to say it, but s/he makes a valid point.
The lack of a long term upgrade path with Apple means that if you want to remail loyal to the brand you will HAVE TO buy a new Apple.
This is why my 6400/200 was the last new Apple machine I bought.
The Beige G3s were the last Apple machines that I would have considered buying. Since they are no longer supported I guess I won't be buying Apple, I have no interest in Apple's current hardware.
That was the parent post's point - that is freaking backwards and bizarre, man.
The post that I replied to was insinuating that since sex is normal and natural, it doesn't make sense to shield children from it, and since violence isn't a necessity of life it should be hidden from children.
The only game where you can statistically beat the house over a LONG period of time - it just requires a graduate level degree in mathematics and statistics to do it in your head
A person with a good system can slant the 0.5% advantage that the house has in his favor.
It doesn't take a degree. All it takes is system that you can use without getting caught. It's not illegal to count cards, but the casinos have the legal right to refuse to gamble with you. If they think you're accurately counting cards, they can refuse to deal you in.
Last year when my SO's ex husband gave their kids (9,8,&6) GTA3 I nearly hit the roof. I had my girlfriend watch as a jacked a Cheetah, drove to staunton and got a hooker for a little "healing".
She proceeded to trade the game in for something else.
I don't have a problem with 15, or 17 year old kids playing games like GTA VC, but younger children would be better off if kept away from them.
Anyone who remembers the game could state definitively that coders are perhaps the least capable killers on planet earth. I'd seriously rather be in the company of my trained attack rabbit (codename: BunBun) than any 10 geeks with AK-47's.
Sure, you're rabbit will make much less noise than me and my 7.62x39mm friend.
The sad thing is that (in the USA at least) graphic violence is apparently more acceptable than graphic sexuality. This appears to be exactly backwards.
Sure, I'm in the US, so maybe I'm a little biased, but I'd MUCH rather explain to my 8 year old why the bad man on TV shot someone than why the bad girl on TV has a penis in her mouth.
Maybe I'm just a little too paranoid, but is it possible that Valve allowed an early alpha version of their code to leak so that they'd have an excuse when they didn't ship this game on time?
Sure, they can take advantage of this time to rewrite some things and prevent cheaters from exploiting the available code, but is the money that they'll lose by not releasing on time less than the money they'll lose when cheaters cause people not to buy the game? I don't think so.
I suspect that the game was going to be late anyway and this is just a convienent excuse.
I have to disagree with you here, I am into some rather obscure music and I quite often find it on Kazaa. When I wanted to burn a CD of an album that I bought on cassette about 10 years ago, I searched Kazaa for "Odd Squad". I found the entire album, plus some other tracks where they were just featured artists.
This is why the more powerful assault rifles and machine guns are illegal to be sold to civilians.
A civillian can purchase a fully automatic firearm provided he undergoes an FBI background check, gets fingerprinted, and pays the $250 per year license fee. It is perfectly legal (in the US) for any law abiding civillian to own a machine gun. It's been this way since 1934.
Even more to the point, the VAST majority of the firearms used to commit crimes are 6 shot revolvers. They were churned out like hoola hoops for about 60 years and are still plentiful and cheap on the black market. Banning firearms is no more about controlling crime than the DMCA is about stopping malicious copyright infringement.
A hacking tool like a port scanner should be legal as it can have an intended use to check your own network for security holes. However, a trojan horse program is obviously intended for illegal remote access to a computer, and should be illegal.
