When you hire a guy to landscape your yard, do you demand him to use the tools in your garage? Aren't YOU the professional? Shouldnt YOU use the tools you feel are necessary to get the job done?
Business has SERIOUSLY chnaged since the 80's. Every "big" company I have worked at, about 20% of the people didn't need to be there.Honestly. When they have massive layoffs, the people that didnt need to be there, are still there! I've been out of work for 10 months. I have a mortgage (I had 2, but had to sell the vacation house), a newborn, and have lived off of our Mutual Funds, and savings account for the past 10 months (unemplyment does NOT pay the bills.) Looking for work is a 7 hour a day job for me. Selling the house we've had for 5 years and put alot of work into, just because the US feels that H1B visas need the work more than I do does not make me a happy person. How do I explain to my daughter when she gets older that being a member of this country does NOT have it's benefits...Maybe I'll move to Europe and start taking jobs away..yeah..that's the ticket
Man, this brings back memories. When I was in HS, (mid 80's), the Commodore 64 ruled and all the cool kids had a Commodore. We used to make demos and pass them around on all the BBS's. There was "l33tness" back then too. The Commie users were the gurus, the kids who had the Apple IIe were laughable. If you had an Adam, you didnt even count!. Of course, there was the Atari 800XL series, and if you were REALLY cool ("rich") you got an AMiga when you went to College. YOU were then the cool kid:)
True. Chomsky is a name that most non-Linguists will know. He is also famous for his Communist ideals, which is why most college professors know his name:) If you're actually interested in Linguistic Theory, look up Swadesh. He's the King of Comparitive Linguistics
I love when Linguistic neoPhytes "quote" Chomsky. I have disagreed with many of his theories, especially the poo-poo theory. According to his theories, Amerindian tongues derive from the Mongols, however, there is yet any evidience that they are even REMOTELY related. He never took into account the South to North migration of Amrerindian Langauges...put that in yuor pipe and smoke it!;)
If one speaks Russian, one can converse in practically any Slavic language. Actually, more people speak Fulani than Croatian. (10 points to the first person who can tell me where they speak Fulani!)
I always liked how I could define variables on the fly anywhere in the code. Really catered to my total lack of organization and self-discipline. I can do that in Perl, now, too! A man after my own heart! I'm ADD man, so the "forced" structure of Java makes me whacky:)
Similar to SUSE on CD but has different software installed. I carry around my Knoppix cd when I have to use an MS workstation. I can't do my job properly on Windows, so without removing windows from the workstation, I can still have my Linux! I've also used Linux on a Live Filesystem to do Windows disk repairs. Especially since most of the Linux on CD distros have memcheck....
I have developed a project called JSPBlog which is a Weblog written in JSP. I found a million and one written in PHP, so I developed mine in JSP and servlets... I always loved the idea of a weblog. You can take a look at it at http://jspblog.sf.net
They WANT 5-10 years, and when they get someone who has it (myself) they don't want to pay the rates they ask (NOT high anymore, but more than $30k us!!) I've dropped my rates at least 7 times in the past 8 months. But when the guy who is hiring YOU (The sr Admin) knows a lot less thna you, no way will he hire you
I never saw Bil Gates as a geek. He's geeky LOOKING, but he's a salesman and a master Marketer. The same people ost of us geeks think are NOT geeks. What has he done to show his geekiness?

You can't say their code sucks..that's a negative comment. You have to tell them thr problem. For example. If you made a deadline for friday to have such and such modules completed (you DID make a deadline, didnt you?), and they havent done it, ask them why? Are they having trouble with something? Do they have all their tools? Do they need Schubert in the background? Shit, use the company account and buy them a book if need be. I've bought books out of my own pocket to help my coders. There has to be an open line of communication. What is the problem they are having? Are they Lazy? Well, you can't stop the laziness.Hire a consultant for 2 weeks if you have to. Get a telecommuter who will bang code at home..Give him a CVS account, review the code and see what he can do. As a manager/leader it is your responsibility to keep those lines of communication open. The belief that "if you want things done right, you have to do them yourself" is a TOUGH one to break. I used to do it..and you usually come off as an arrogant prick. If they feel you'll just do it ANYWAY, they won't bust their horns, you get me? Like when you were a kid. If you didnt want to do something, you did a lousy job at it, so your MOM owuld do it and she wouldnt ask you again....same principle really. You have to let them know that THEY are accountable for their own code..not you.
Programer's SHOULDN'T be micromanaged! The programmers I asscoiate with LOVE their work and don't need guidance..give them some documentation on APIS and a couple of weeks their up to speed. I have done work which I absolutely abhored...(device drivers...bLAH! Not sexy:) )and I did putz around...but at least I was a contracter and I knew once I finished it was over. When i hired programmers, I never looked at the skill..I looked at their passion. If you have passion for something, you'll GET the skill. If you have skill, but no passion, you'll always be mediocre.
How do coders who produce no code get work, while other programmers who can program circles around their colleagues are out of work? Is your company trying to save a buck by hiring inexperienced people? When I first started coding, I never even applied to a job until I knew I could code a couple of decent apps by myself.(This is 10 years ago). My first programming job was me and another coder and a PHB standing over our shoulders (I kid you not), and then , at the end of the day, you had to lint your C code, and whoever had the most erros had to buy lunch the next day. My next gig, I asked if I code work at home. They said OK..I banged out so much code it was unreal. I found my ZONE. All my tools were there, my environment, the background music..everything... But people work under different environments. Just post a job posting and you'll have thousands of unemployed coders who are CAPABLE applying. I guarantee it.
As a person who's been in the field for 12 years, and was "replaced" by H11B's from India (who made $50k less), and ALL the compabies I see now won't hire me because I'm too expensive. Go to projectusa.org
OK..it only had 100..but I knew everyone by name...I appreciated EVERY single person there, and I even invited everyone to my house for a BBQ. As A president of a company, your employees are doing YOU a favor by working for you..You can't be CEO of a 1 man company.(Well, I guess the dot bomb era proved you can:))
Exactly..the last company I worked for KNEW better than to have a BOSS hover over us....there was an IT Director but he NEVER even went near us...he knew we knew our jobs, that's why he hired us...so he wouldnt HAVE to hover over us...
I don't think a sysadmin is SUPPOSED to defrag a user's drive...In all the years I've been a sysadmin, I NEVER touched the user's computers. I keep the UNIX machines running. Help desk or the MCSE's defrag user's hard drives.

Running BSD with IP v6? I still have to read up on IP 6....
You CAN make windows run from CD. I have an article on my site about it. :)
Note: Prepare a weekend and expect to make a lot of Coasters.

Why is conservative bad? You'd INSTEAD believe that the LIBERAL communist media is good?

Someone may have obviously mentioned these books.
Especially the "Bat" book (sendmail) and DNS/BIND.
My personal favorite is UNIX Power Tools

Yes, then you'd also be the CFO, the CTO and the Janitor :)
