    Well, I said I have a firewall, and I also listed the firewall I use (IPCop IPCOP)
    And the fact that it's a 486. So, one can assume I have a "cheap" setup. You can get a 486 for $50. IPCOP is free. 2 NIC's cost $15.

    I'm a smoker and I know it's bad for me...but hell, I'm addicted:) The only reason I smoke is for the social aspect. If I quit now, I'll be a dick, and no one will want to hang around with me :)

    I have practically a complete data center in my house. I have complete control. I make my own boxes, and my connection is cheap enough. (However, the electric bill is gettign sort of high with 8 servers running and all the AC units we have :))

    Hey! I just spent the entire day yesterday planting Impatiens. We have a house and the front looked pretty barren. Shit, for what I paid, I want it to at least LOOK like we're not white trash! Gardening is a very relaxing past time, and me and the wife do it together. It's alot of fun. Just get some flats from a nursery if you fear seeds. Then you and your better half can have another activity to do together.

    I'm a smoker and we have similar rules. I ONLY smoke in my office (and now that I'm unemployed, there is nothign to do BUT smoke ;)) My office is my "cave" (every man needs a cave), and thats also the only place that looks like a bomb hit it.

    I don't give up a damn thing. Being married (for 5 years) has been the greatest thing thta ever happened to me. Too many guys here seem to be pussy whipped. Who brings home the bacon, huh??????

    drop a deuce. I love it. I don't need a net connection on the bowl, but I have my stack of books in the cabinet (My wife doesnt care, she just wants them out of site...it doesnt go with her "theme")

    Yes...I am married. have been for 5 years. My wife respects ME as a person. If she couldnt have handled my servers I neevr would have married her. We are best friends as well as lovers. A friend should understand. I have servers all over the house. (I made the broom closet my Rack :) )She has her thing, I have mine. She is not a geek at all. She just loves me for me, Sun Ultras and all :)

    Well, actually, I have 7 boxes (a Sun Ultra, A couple *BSD boxes, and a couple Linux boxes). I use the firewall box (small system, 700 MB harddrive) to forward ports to the other machines. My solaris box is a Webserver, and I have a freebsd box as a webserver as well. I have a CVS box. I just have tons of crap on my network. :)

    dynamoo listed UNICOS as secure. I rememebr UNICOS when I was in the service. That was truly a beautiful UNIX. I would HOPE they call it secure, since the Dept of Defense is the major purchaser of Cray IIs!

    I use a 486 running IPCop as my firewall. Works absolutely fantastic. Web based interface. It's a spinoff of SmoothWall because the owner's a dick. :)

    I don't use Redhat on my desktop. I use debian. I've used EnGarde, and it is a might darn secure distro. It's redhat w/o NO services running.

    What freebsd does is install the kernel, X(if you request it), and Networking with vi and some minimal programs.Basically a default Windows install!. Add 10 minutes for a network install. A FULL install DOES take about 40 minutes, but no one does a full install. You usualy do a minimum and then do sysinstall to choose the packages you want afterwards

    Hmm...I've been using USB on Linux for around 2 years. I can burn CDS, watch DVDS and browse the web at the same time on Linux. My digital camera is in /mnt/camera.Has been that way for years.

    I agree. I had an argument with an MS lackey the other day. he says "2 CDS to install an OS??!!" I said yes, when you install windows, you have to download everything to get a working system. WHen I install Linux , I have ALL the tools I need.

    I have been 100% Microsoft free since 1997!I havent dual booted in a LONG time. I just get a cheap box and install a new system and ssh in. I guarantee I'm not the only one. There is nothing I need Windows for.

    The example of making a non-*NIX user use vi is a bad one. VERY few people are native vi users (especialy on /.).You had to start w/ something. Sure, vi is more arcane then Notepad, but damn is it powerful.When I am forced to use windows, I by default go to Start..Run. md and type vi! Ever type ESC :wq in notepad? I have.Plenty of times.No matter what UNIX system I am at, I can pretty much guarantee that vi will be installed.

    People who are not in a "group" ALWAYS get offended by a groups jokes. Just like I get offended by "jocks" who can't believe my life doesnt revolve around baseball..And then they go on to the "non-jock" jokes. Who cares?

    Redhat is a "server OS". I never believed RedHat was desktop friendly. There are MANY more desktop Linux systems. But Linux is Linux. Just because my wife runs Lycoris doesnt mean my debian workstation can't effectively communicate with it. Shit, at least 5 programs she uses (acesses from the desktop), are remote X apps.
    ssh -n is a BEAUTIFUL command. That alone has caused amazement for many a windows user.

    No matter what is said, I will never go back to Windows. I have my Linux systems SOO customized in such a way that can never be done with Windows. Not just the look. Everything. I do have a slight advantage since I've been a UNIX admin for a decade.But, given time, anybody can do it.

    After logging in, I can get my mail!
