    People keep bringing up name brand! I haven't bought a name brand computer in over 7 years! I buy whiye box...You can buy a MoBo with a 2.2 GHZ processor for $500! What is comparable in the Apple world? Until they make it possible to build an Apple yourself off the shelf, I'm not buying one.

    That's funny..I was just going to say make a bootable CD-ROM for recovery. Tne I realized that most of the people posting here are NOT using Linux. There is an excellent ISO for Linux called Mindi. It will backup the files you want, split the file system across a number of isos and makes a bootable CD for you! Since I download shit from freshmeat every day, I have to use CD-RWs :)

    Not if you go to your local PC shop. They'll hand you a PC with a blank harddrive. If you want Windows XP, they'll GLADLY give it to you, for $150. The shop by me has Linux CDs (Mandrake) for free on the counter. The sign says "Unleash the power of your PC..Take One"

    All these talks about support...I've never had to bring my PC into support. I have no idea what it's like..I get whitebox, basically build your own. If the CDROM fails, I pull it out and the Computer Store hands me a new one. I have 10 PCs in my house that are whitebox. If something fails, I send back the piece of hardware thats causing me a problem. I have a friend who had to send his ENTIRE PC to the company and had to wait a MONTH to get it back!! Thats what name brand gets you??? Screw THAT!!!
    I can swap all the hardware I want. I dont break any warranties. Only the PARTS are warrantied, which is MUCH better if you ask me. Got a Harddrive that has bad sectors up the wazzoo? I hand the hard drive to the guy behind the counter, and he gives me a new one. 5 minutes to remove the HDD, 5 minutes for him to get a new one of the shelf, and 25 minutes to restore from backup :)

    I only buy whitebox. I havent bought a name brand PC in AGES.(Since 1995 actually). I get EXACTLY what I want, the exact components I want. I used to just build them, but now I have www.mwave.com do it. Then I install a fresh copy of linux on the machine and presto, I have a kick-ass machine. Why do people buy name-brand anyway? It's an honest question. I can understand a company buying a fleet of Dells, but why does an individual buy a Gateway or what not? What's the supposed added benefit?

    I had one of every computer back in the 80's. Commie 64, the 128 D, a TRS-80 Coco, an Atari 800XL, a coleco Adam and a TI99/4a.The TRS-80 was the worst of them. It had a limited BASIC that was more akin the the IBM than it was to anything else, IIRC.
    Back then, I compared the capability of BASIC. The Commodore series had by far the best, and came with the SID chip (sound chip). What was cool, back then, when you bought software, the floppies came with versions of software for ALL the machines out at that time. One copy gave you a version for the Atari line, the Texas instuments line, the commie line as well as the 'Trash-80's". They truly were all different.

    Conectiva gives you the option to choose either the 2.2 kernel or the 2.4 kernel. COnectiva is really a mature distro that people should take a look at.

    Can't you just disable updatdb? It's a cron job. mandrake 8.1 does the same thing. You only need it if you use the locate command. I do my own updatedb if I need to.

    From 9 - 5, I look for work. Job boards, newspapers. Everything. I fire off on avg 15 resumes per DAY. For the past 2 months or so. How many interviews? One! I was overqualified. :(
    In the job listings, they don't list any phone numbers, so you can't call! And many, MANY companies don't accept un-solicited calls.

    The job boards have postings by agencies. Don't say look in the NY Times, because there is NOTHING in there.

    Actually, I found it the opposite. They would rather hire someone with less experience who will take less pay. Do you know how many jobs I was overqualified for??? To me that makes no sense. I am applying for a job in my field, with the exact qualifications I have, yet I am overqualified. The funny thing is, lately I've been very insecure, and think I am underqualified!

    I've been in this industry for 10+ years and I can't find a job. A job beneath me? Should you expect an out of work doctor to work at Mickey Ds? And By the way, Mickey D's by me won't hire you unless you're an illegal Hispanic. And since I am not Indian, and will refuse to do my job for $30,000, I find it hard to get work. The corporate world is globalist, and not thinking nationalistically.

    I live in Long Island, NY. The Median household income is $120,000. The Median cost of a house is $300,000. I live a block from a Lord & Taylors (If you're from long Island, you now know where I live!). People where I live aren't feeling the economy slump.
    However, I've been in this industry for over a decade. I have recently been laid off, and have been humiliated at interviews. They're telling me I am asking for too much.Telling me I have to make less. If I make less, I can't pay my mortgage. Plain and simple. Why should I get a $30,000 paycut? I am finding it VERY difficuly to get a job at the wage I've had for the past 2 years. I can get a job, but not at the pay that I want. Should I accept the paycut? Or should I refuse not to whore myself and wait it out?

    An associate of mine (This guy is OLD) used to be the guy who changed the vacuum tubes in the old computers from the 50's! He told me stories of running up and down all day long with a milk crate of vacuum tubes!

    I have OptimumOnline Cable Modem Service and pay $40 a month if I am already a cable subscriber. It's $10 more if you do not use them as a Cable TV provider.

    I'm the opposite. I've been out of the Windows world so much, I find it MORE frustrating to make the changes in Windows. Not that I forgot, but Linux spoiled me. Where else can you do a spell check in a 500 page document and save it FASTER than a person in windows can even OPEN notepad?! However, I have a book in my collection that I let people borrow that are moving from the windows world to the *NX way of thinking. It's called "The WIndows Addict's 12 step program". It's definitely not technical. It helps in the transition.

    I used to own a datacenter and bandwidth costs money. A T-3 is humorously known to cost a "Porsche a month". But as of now, I choose where I live depending on whether or not they have high speed internet access. If I can't afford it, I will give up FOOD to get my bandwidth :)
    I can't conceive of using a modem. I've been too spoiled by having a T-1 piped to my house and then getting a cable modem. Dialup?? What's that?

    Well, for $40 a month, I get 700kb/s guaranted connection. It's nearly T-1 speed.

    I have Cable TV, and a Cable Modem (with 8 systems connecting thru a firewall), and pay around $125 a month. For the bandwidth AND Cable TV(HBO, etc). Cablevision....you gotta love 'em! If I drop my Cable TV, and Get something like DirecTV or Dish Network, I'd only be saving about $15, which lets me buy a couple extra cups of coffee :)

    From what I see at Securityfocus, it just seems that INDIVIDUAL programs on Linux have exploits (most of them are LOCAL exploits). I don't count a local vi buffer overflow as a security breach. Most of the Windows exploits are actual WIndows OS exploits.
    Or am I wrong?

    I never said Immigrants are lesser people. My area (Long Island) has a 60% increase according to reports that were discussed during county meetings.
    I am not a racist. These are things I am personally seeing. I am referring to Third world immigrants. How come n immigrant from Honduras is not given a problem, while an immigrant from let's say, Russia has a problem? First world immigrants are not cheap labor. They bring valued skills to the country. The Immigration reform act of 1968 made it so third world countries are first priority. Why? Many countries were accusing the US as being a Brain Drain (UK, Germany, Japan were losing valued citizens to the US)

    You seemed to disregard my statements. Where do you live? It seems you live in an area where you don't see "illegal" third-world immigrants effect the community you live in. And that is understandable why you do not understand. I said nothing about immigrants that can bring something to the community. I don't think bringing cheap labor is a good enough reason. Come to where I live, and see how "illegal" immigrants have increased by 60% in 2 years, adding gang violence,and causing property values to go down. It's not LA, and it's not NYC.

    If there were no illegal immigrants working for 3.75 as a janitor, a CITIZEN can do the job for $6 or $7 an hour! Do not say they take the jobs citizens WON'T take. Tell that to the unemployed American citizen who WOULD take that job for a fair wage. Ever try to get a job in the meat packing industry? In the midwest, the meat packing industry was the PRIMARY source of income for midwesterners. Now it is not. Go to Mexico and SEE the billboards saying there are jobs a plenty in America. See the 2,000 illegal Mexicans in Colorado working in the meat packing industry that USED to be run by citizens. Go to ANY Auto plant and see how many citizens work there. See how many layoffs were citizens and how many were replaced my LOW WAGE illegal immagrants.
