We are a New York city/Long Island based Web Hosting, Development and networking company and we are 99% Microsoft Free. It's REALLY not that hard.Star Office is good for almost anything but Word2000, but I believe WordPerfect for Linux converts Office 2000 docs. We have the obligatory NT dedicated servers for our clients, and a Mac for Graphic work, everything else is Linux (or BSD) It took the Microsoft apologists a little time to realize that they didnt have to suckle from MS's teat anymore, but al in all, everyone is happier, works better and less stressed:) I don't know of any software for Linux or UNIX that works with Lotus, but then again, I think Domino sucks anyway..(that's just my opinion)
Isn't LOGO really a dialect of LiSP? I remember alot of {{}} and [[ ]] in LOGO and that's what scared the crap out of me with LISP:) I would have to say Delphi (Pascal)..it's a practical language..alot of people put it in the same league as VB...but it's more solid, and is structured...it would be an easy step to C++ or Java
I think freedom is best described by the Libertarian party: No law should be made that inhibits my rights directly. A good example: The seatbelt law. I where my seatbelt, but if you feel like smashing your head against the window..be my guest. Clears out the gene pool. If you want to inject your veins with Heroin..more power to you. But if you come into my house to steal my TV to support your drug habit..that's a different story. I am the biggest defender of the anarchy of the internet. The last true bastion of free speech. But, then again, do i have a right to use something that is not mine? That's for the internet community to decide. In a true anarchy, if i want your house..I just take it. That's if i can get past the owner with a shotgun. What ever happened to community law on the internet? I do what the hell I please, but if someone doesnt like what i'm doing, he can stop it. I think it's referred to as tribal law.
I LOVE gnome, but I can't monitor the leaks whe I use netscape! I use Mozilla to browse the web mostly because X doesnt run up to 89% memory usage when I use it..although..if I open more than one window (which I do ALOT)it'll just "poof" disappear on me:( When I get really pissed, I start using Hotjava..doesnt display html4.0 perfectly, but i can open 10 windows all day if I want
Corel? I've been a Linux user since 1995...and while I was impressed with Corel, Corel seems a little too "closed" for me...the biggest friggin thing about Corel was the mouse! If you had a serial mouse, you had to manually edit the config files, after you installed HALF the OS because the keyboard couldn't selevt all the options on the GUI installer...was there a patch? No..I found the solution thru dejanews..If this was RedHat or Mandrake (or any of the other 50 distros) this wouldve been fixed the next day...so in December, i couldn't recommend Corel to any newbie
Never said I havent heard of Metallica...I am a Closet Death metal fan...I'll give you a perfect example though...I heard a band was playing at a club and the band was called Mr Bungle. I decided to get a sample from Napster..well..they SUCKED. True...their CD sales may have gone down because I heard them first. You expect me to blindly buy a CD when I never heard them? True..most music is known by word of mouth..but most people my age don't listen to my taste of music:)
Has Metallica realized that "true" fans will shell out the $10 and buy a CD? There are a lot of bands that I bought BECAUSE I heard their MP3 on Gnapster. (Yes..I use the linux version) I wouldn't have known about them any other way. PS First Post
I'm CTO of a Company in NYC..we are a 100% (OK..99%..our graphic artists insist on Macs) Linux based company. Our secretary uses Kmail...she had ZERO problems learning how to use it.Anyone can use Linux. I'm not talking about installing..but using it. I set my mother up(who is 59) with Linux....Set her up with StarOffice, Gnomeicu and even Laim.....she's happy as a clam and hasnt had a problem (meaning she hasnt called me for help)
I remember using Geos on my Commodore 64 in 1986! When I upgraded to the 128d (with a 1 Meg Hard drive...whoo!)it would boot into Geos...plus, I didnt have to use the mouse..I could use the joystick to point and click
Once you can't past the "foreign" grammar (verbs, nouns and adjectives get conjugated at the beginning), it's actually prety easy. The only problem for a Indo_european student is that no words bear any resemblance to any words you already know. But then again..ANY language is easier than Finnish! My Goodness..i actually believe Satan himslef invented Finnish:)
Actually, as a foreign language enthusiast (I speak over 11) Klingon is based on the Athapascan Languahe Family (which includes Navajo, Apache, Chickasaw and Tlingit). Amerindian languages ave very complex, in that EVERY minor detail is conjugated...leaving no doubt as to what the speaker is saying. For example, in Navajo, there are 14 words for 'this', as in: this rigth next to me on the left, this living thing, this inanimate thing, this thing I once had, etc. From the studies I ahve done, it seems that native cultures were a "survival" culture, and no assumptions could be made. Interesetingly enough, many sentences we have multiple words for, they had 1 word for...they were mostly "hunting" terms. Like ?tok meant, "Go stand behind the tree on the left and aim your arrow at the deers heart"..there was no time for bullshitting when your out in the field. Men developed nouns....women developed adjectives and words of emotion. While the men were out hunting buffalo, the woman were back home weaving and gossiping:)
It seems that Apple invented this design...I didn't see a "translucent" PC before the IMac came out. Although I hate Macs as much as the next guy, I'd be pretty pissed myself if I made a round PC and every one copied the design off of me......
There's still the Toilet factor..(reading books and manuals on the bowl) and the Train factor.. It's just not convenient to fire up a laptop or even the PC to read a book or manual. Until HandHeld Ebooks which can read PDFs are a common thing, will print manuals be dead.
The Starfire has been my dream for a LONG time...No one has seen a machine until they've seen a Starfire....I actually get hard looking at that baby....a friggin $80,000 machine! It ways 800 lbs!
The only 2 reasons I would like WMF to come to Linux is so that 1) I can go to sites that support ONLY WMF 2) There can be a free Streaming Server for Linux (I know there are others, but then Windows users have to install plugins and stuff )
Who has a solution for serving streaming content with Linux besides purchasing the $3,000 real server? IMO, I think MS's Media Server is pretty good, but am embarassed to tell people I use NT because it has better streaming video server support (I then lose all arguments concerning Linux vs NT at that point)We have 25 Linux servers, and have looked into OpenQuicktime (is that it?) but we than have to purchase the $1,000 + software to enable a.mov file to stream. And..if there is another form of streaming plugin, what are then chances that viewers will download yet again another plugin? Thanks
We have an NT server for that very reason..and it IS one hell of a F**** to maintain...I've been using *NIX for years and I've been spoiled by the *NIXES..I get SOO mad when I can't just telnet into the NT box.

I agree, although speed reading thru the groups you belong to on deja is slow as molasses..even on a T-1. I have no NewsServer per se, because we have to purchase a feed...I'm the only one who reads my NGs daily (6 grps a day), so the expense to get a feed is ludicrous..every free NNTP servers blocks my ip..so I'm doomed to Deja, or have to pony up $15 a month for 6 groups...

Does every body want to be a corporate monkey? Work for YOURSELF...that's where the money comes in...and that's where age has no barrier....

How come Microsoft always takes decades to figure these security flaws? Is it intentional?
