  4. Some things just have to be private... on IBM Appoints Chief Privacy Officer · · Score: 2

In many ways I look at this article and wonder if this means people will assume that IBM is trying to close itself off to people. I think with any company looking to make money...there are always things that must remain private. While this could be the problems of another company, it also has a lot to do with new innovative research, policies, etc. I don't think that this is really a surprise to anyone and was frankly surprised to even see it on slashdot. I am of the belief that this is a good and practical thing for any company of any size with the slightest amount of confidentiality/innovation to consider.

I understand this. But this does not make it entirely modular as I think of modular. Maybe I have a bad definition. Loading and unloading functionality is what I think needs done. i.e. When I close the goofy My Side-whatever that should take up less mem. The current design seems to resemble MS OS design. When you turn something off on a MS OS...you just can't see it any more. It does not necessarily release any resources. When a turn a panel off (now a panel isn't modular...but this such system would work) from my current X session or I remove a module from my Linux kernel. It actually releases the resources. Wouldn't this help?

I completely understand this. A lot of my projects have been doing the performance tuning stuff...which is the opposite. However, IMHO when making a user-centered project you should not make it this bloated. And, if you do, it should be more modular by design. That way, parts of it can truly be unloaded from memory. I believe there was some discussion of making Mozilla more modular at one point..although its been a long while since I followed its production.

IMHO I do not care if they self-promote themselves a bit. They need to pay the bills. Understood.

However, when they begin to make the product more bloated in order to suit their needs..I have a problem with that. Netscape 6 used like 3 times as much memory as 4.7 one my machine. Did they make a deal with RAM manufacturers or summin? Is that one of those other built in money makers? Self-advertising to help with expenses is ok for me...(to a point..as long as you can get rid of most of it) But making the product more of a resource hog...yuck!

I know someone who has one of these..so I was looking into it for her. I found the following info:

    • CPU is mounted on the motherboard. You're not going to be upgrading this thing.
    • There is a single SODIMM socket on the bottom of the motherboard. It comes with a 64MB CAS2 SODIMM module.
    • There is an intact IDE header, marked CN12.
    • There's also a CN13, which is marked as the FDD connect, but isn't populated.
    • CN11 isn't populated either; it's marked as the CF Card Conn (Compact Flash).
    • CN5 is also unpopulated, marked as the IRDA connector.
    • The most interesting connector is CN16, marked as the MINI PCI connector. I wonder if there are any mini-ethernet device available. Maybe even a wireless product.
    • CN6 is a com port header, in addition to BC15, which is the modem connector. It has the same style modem as the I-O (size & location of the connectors).
    • CN19 is unpopulated, and marked as the VGA connector.
    • The BIOS chip is also an SST 39F020, the same as an I-O.
    • I've removed the DOC and the CMOS battery to try and get into the BIOS. No luck. It still keeps asking for the password.

This was all from this internet appliance bboard and a user "anonyman". I might get around to playing with this. I guess it depends on the term of the agreement and whether or not they *must* return it. Does anyone know the specifics of this deal?

I can't justify this. I don't have to. But I don't claim its Open Source.

Why do you believe what people claim? And who claims this? I know a ton of people who barely know what a computer is that use Napster and burn their own CDs...if I asked them what Open Source was they'd have no clue.

I have a lot of clue what Open Source is all about. I actually live with one of the core Helix Code developers. I used to work with the Conglomerate guys. Also guys whose work is now in various Linux distros.

I'm gonna take your work, be it school, artistic or "workplace" work, I'm gonna pass it off as my own

I am proud of you. But, if you know what Open Source is...why do you claim it is a haven for criminals? Why do you claim the spirit of the movement is passing off others work as your own? Do you really understand what is behind the Open Source movement? This last statement makes me think you still believe it is free as in beer.

The Open Source movement is not about getting other's work for free. Read ESR's THE CATHEDRAL AND THE BAZAAR and get a clue.

However, after having read the article, (unless I misunderstand the article) I think this has more to do with every software vendor selling items in Germany. The whole spiel about how once an item enters the marketplace, the author loses some rights to control the terms of secondary sales. This seems like a very big deal considering how big secondary sales are. This ruling could have a serious effect on sales of software in Germany. Its a ruling that may cause serious reform. If I am a big software company, do I want to sell it to a secondary sales company and lose my rights to protect the terms under which that item is resold? This would definitely worry me as a secondary sales company, while the big companies might begin to shy away from contracts for this sort of product sales. This ruling seems like it would be big for any type of vendor in Germany...and it definitely will be interesting where it will lead to.
