I admit I wasn't very accurate when writing the summary because in fact no exoplanet was discovered but major signs for one were. They still need to double check with the guys at Hawaii I think to confirm it. It was mentioned on the show that Dara has a degree in maths and physics but that's not what we know and love him for is it?:-)
Celestia was the first thing I thought of as well when I read the headline:-) I hadn't used it in a while but my brother's quiet into astronomy nowadays and I showed Celestia to him and noticed it hasn't been updated for over a year now and most images are outdated. Sad for such a wonderful application.
exactly what I was thinking, in india antibiotics are used as if it was water. When I was there last year, newspapers adviced against eating honey because it was completely saturated with antibiotics. (another food scandal at the time was chickpeas coloured green and sold as peas)
I about to buy a 'still in the never opened box' C64. I'm really excited about it especially when reading how enthusiastic people still are and how they think back of their times with it. Hope I can find a tape drive and other second hand usefulness for it.
maybe because your main (and perhaps only) language is English you might not be able to immediately understand how to pronounce it, which I think is the main problem here. I speak English, Dutch, French, I have a basic understanding of Spanish and German and I think in all of these languages you'd immediately see this as being yah-see which doesn't seem too bad IMHO. Someone who speaks English and is unable to think in a different language would, I think, start thinking: "is this yay-sy, yah-cy, yah-see, yah-ki, yah-ky,...", whereas a German, French, anything else-speaking person would immediately see this as Yah-See. I don't know what your mother tongue is but this is just what I think.
To produce 1g, the radius of rotation would have to be 224 m (735 ft) or greater, which would make for a very large spaceship
Not as easy as you think and think of the benefits we had by ignoring gravity (scientific advancements). Otherwise we'd only have put the first man in space by now IMO.
An inconvenient truth was just on tv here and watched it again after all these years. Coming on/. and reading this news feel good. I've heard bad things about Walmart but this makes them earn a great deal of my respect.
Even with the low price and selling at a loss I still wouldn't buy one. Tablet are IMO useless things. Much like cars: you only miss it once you have one.
I've been reading Slashdot for a long time until I finally created an account. I love the website for the sarcasm and the great mix of news, whether that's science, IT, SF or even politics. Therefore I say thank you and let's hope many will follow you and the other mods to keep maintaining this website in the future. Thank you and goodbye!
It strikes me that a topic involving Canada immediately provokes discussions on how the USA is supporting terrorists and waging war all over the world and that they are supporting dictators. Last I heard Canada has nothing to do with the USA...or is that something US Americans can't accept?
This is very true if you look at the real reasons why Hindus don't eat meat and Muslims pork. Meat couldn't be stored long enough and as nomadic tribes started to settle they'd start growing crops and eat more veggies.
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis had their private island named Fuck Off

Let's hope not. Thanks to this we're discovering new great things again and again!

3D tv is just a scam. tried every 20-30 years and they just don't learn...

I think that was only with puritans who were seeking less religious freedom.
the qi episode you refer to I presume
So Brussels is a country now or am I missing something?
it should be frenched fries, not french. Just call them plain fries or ' freedom fries' or whatever... :p
We know how to create "artificial gravity" by spinning a zero-gravity vehicle and making everyone exist on the outer perimeter.
