If you're "using tools such as Facebook, Skype, and Twitter" in coffee shops for your job, then I'm afraid I've got news for you - dicking around on your Mac for attention does not actually constitute working. It constitutes "dicking around".

Also, who are you going to play table football with? Huh? Huh? Huh? Huh?

Another vote for Live Mesh - I use it as a 'lazy source control' at home. They've got versions of it out for the OSX and Windows Mobile already, I just wish they'd make one for Linux*.*. You (plural) may recall a /. post earlier about how many of us still haven't switched completely to Linux because there's always some software on Win*.* that we need that isn't available on other OSes. For me, this is it.

They said that it's for the gaming experience. When you play a game, you want to immerse yourself into that world, playing games is about escaping reality. A jagged edge or 'water' can make all the difference in a world or environment that you're exploring. Try staring at Lara Croft's airbags in TR: Underworld and then try playing TR original. Although the original content may be much better, TR:Underworld isn't that bad because the environment covers for the lack of content.

In a way, it is a vicious cycle, but it's also innovation, you don't want games to become stagnant in terms of how they look.

While the LSE denied that the collapse was TradElect's fault, they also refused to explain what the problem really wa.

Right, so it wasn't M$'s TradElect's fault, therefore it clearly was M$'s TradElect's fault. Someone give this guy a job at the FBI!

The ads are usually javascript scripts which in turn are requesting external pages by document.write()ing out iframes to the content page which in turn may have their own resources (js/css/jpg/gif/etc) to request. A lot of browsers don't like showing you the entire page until the javascript bits have been requested, hence the delay.

Nothing wrong with that in some cases, you're right that they have their places. But the role of a developer is evolving - they need to understand the system they're working on and find out if something's wrong when the specs are given to them. If there's a potential red flag, raise it. That sort of thing.

If HCL is as world class as it would like to think, it needs world class developers. Else code-monkey-organizations are a dime a dozen. TFA also talks about the Japanese and Indian mentalities, and I've worked with 'coders' from both of these places. djupedal's comment below this also testifies to the situation, as does AC's comment above this. It's impossible to teach them! They'd rather copy paste from my examples than look at the approach I've taken to a problem.

The point I'm weakly trying to make is that if you're outsourcing, you're trying to save money, but it doesn't mean that you should try to sacrifice quality. Sacrificing quality is something you'd do for an in-house project, but would you really want to do that for a public-facing product?

It may help get us there, but in a recession where media hype is king, spending on something 'with no immediate returns' will be frowned upon by the public; maybe cause an uproar or two.
