When was United States every a democracy? My understanding was that it is a federal republic. If American is a democracy, Al Gore would have been the president.
There are a billion dollars in your cupbaord. If you don't look in the cupboard, you will never find it. If you for look it and still did not find it, that's because you lacks faith and should spend more time praying to $ sign. One day, when you pray enough and have enough faith, you will find your 1 billion dollars.
You are right about M$ creating products with low barrier to entry. However, due to this low barrier to entry, you get bad everything because 80% (from my experience from interactions with my co-workers) of the people writing the programs or administrating the system are well, a bit low on their technical knowledge side. Not that they are that bad, but most people was so happy whenever they get a working system that they never bothers to think in depth of the ramifications of the way they wrote the software or configure their systems or learn about how the system actually works. (Most people wait patiently for windows explorer to be loaded when they plugin in their remoable drive which contains hundred of megabytes of tens of thousand of zipped files). It might not be a bad idea to make sure that the programmer/system admin is trained in certain skills before they can get the tools workings. At least, everyone can sleep well at night rather than me constantly banging my head against the wall due to "ingenius" pieces of work that was handed down to me. Forgive me for my whining, and yes, I still had not figure out why my NFS server happens to work.
Well, someone can always start a new distro just for desktop with all possible desktop enhancements. As it is, most of the distributions is better off for servers. In fact, I don't even like Linux Windowing system anymore with KDE and GNOME each competing on which of them can slow down the system more.
I had lost track of Linux and its development. But it always seems to me that if we want games on linux, the windowing system should be completely rewritten. Maybe the linux community can look at how Mac OS do it?
There are people all over the world who can show me "much more impressive feats at a moment's notice" than raising the dead, resurrecting themselves three days after a brutal execution and ascending to the heavens? Mind telling me who these people are?
The Sumerians seems to be able to do it rather frequently.
I think Microsoft attracts not-so-technical crowds who are not interested in their products except for using those products to get things done. These are the people who will not form a cult following as they see Microsoft as a means to the end. On the other hand, Microsoft products does not lead in any significant ways. Technically, they tends to "borrow" existing technologies and often corrupting these technologies for their own marketing benefits. In terms of user interface, they are also lagging and have to "borrow" from other companies. In short, Microsoft just does not have cutting edge in any fields even though they manage to merge existing ideas into money making products. So I don't see how can a microsoft cult following be established?
That's sounds like a lot of security measures you had and you could have done with much less. I think a hardware firewall is sufficient in most cases (if you are using your computer as a client machine). As for people encountering "security" problems, I think it is a lack of understanding of computer systems and security as a whole.
There should be laws making organisations liable for any damage on our own computers due to their insistence of us using certain software to access their sites. For example, if a banking site required IE6 and our computer is compromised as a result of using IE6 while using their website, the bank should compensate us. Similar if we are using linux and have to switch to windows to use IE to access their website, and the windows is compromise, the bank should similarly compensate us.
Why not build giant umbrellas in space to make sure that less sunlight reaches the earth? Or build a pump to pump all the carbon dioxide into space? Or put giant aluminium sheet around the world to reflect the sunlight out of earth?
There are ways and ways to cool down the world temperature. There is never one way!
Well, the facts after I did some research seems to be that the world climate is a complex system and it is far too complicated to model. But it doesn't matter anyway cos we know that global warming is due to carbon dioxide in the air.
It all depends on how you apply Occam's Razor. If it is apply in the following way: Global temperature had been rising for the past 20000 years. Global temperature is still rising. Then that is probably a simpler explanation as compare to "mainstream" theories that goes, carbon dioxide is one of the *many* greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide can cause global warming, and due to global climate being a complex system, we don't know for sure what is carbon dioxide role in the current warming but we just know it is main cause of global warming. On top of this, due to this biasness, we might as a result fail to find out the actual cause of global warming until it is too late!
Anyway, it shocks me to see so many believers in global warming are still balantly "contributing to it". For a start, you all should get off slashdot, switch off your computer and cover yourself under thick blankets (if you are living in a winter climate now).

so which are the experts that FCC consult?
Based on your logic, 2000 years down the road, FSM would be deemed to have existed, because so many people had written about it and spotted it.

It might be a bit more frightening to think of it as apes evolved from human ancestors but what I said is absolutely valid.

And hence that's where all the unusable programs came from...
What happen to the good old FUD?
Can you imagine if all religious texts were copyrighted?
We will finally get world peace, since people can't use the name of religions to commit violence?
The data is just that -- data. How you PROCESS it, on the other hand...
the hypothesis and assumptions are open to abuses.
I think it would be easier to blame inertia. People are supposed to change with time, but this is an obvious case that people don't.

I think people who can't think for themselves should be "decertify" from slashdot?
You are not serious about stopping global warming. Drinking carbonated drinks adds to the cardon dioxide in the air. At least says me!
And every scientist knows that you need a crisis to get funding? No?
The only way?
Why not build giant umbrellas in space to make sure that less sunlight reaches the earth?
Or build a pump to pump all the carbon dioxide into space?
Or put giant aluminium sheet around the world to reflect the sunlight out of earth?

This probably the best logic for global warming that I had read in this discussion so far! Too bad I have no mod points.

I am sure eager to see the scientific proof!
